  1. Never bought a lottery ticket myself, but, I suppose if I were a MLB Chief, and given the sheer numbers of players coursing through the league, and the remote likelihood of success for any given one of them, I would collect a fair number of lottery tickets. Just because you never know who the next Mariano Rivera or Tony Gwynn or Trevor Hoffman is going to be.
  2. Nice looking swing by Sano. Not sure all the talk about how much weight he's lost is accurate. Still looking like a draft horse on the bases.
  3. Doesn't matter how Sano looks in photos if he thinks fastball when a curve is coming. Donuts on the outside corner get him every time. There is no diet for that.
  4. The read-between-the-lines on this: "Once the season is going, and we figure out what we've got with young arms, Buxton, Sano and the whole team, we are confident we can find pitching on the open market." I'd rather pitch young guys for once -- Romero, Vazquez, Littel, Mejia, Thorpe, Gonsalves, et al -- see who swims and sinks, then, live with that. Twins are credible division challengers in 2019, with a (arguably) top 5 minor league system. Steady and steadfast, raise the level in this organization, but don't sell out for one year, one guy, or one hunch.
  5. Yes, and how many times have people said, even before the analytics craze, that a team wins the World Series when more than a couple players on a team surpass their previous career best season? Quite simply, that's what it takes to win it all. And how that happens, when it happens, why it happens -- it's just magic. Waiting for it is hard. For sure.
  6. Not sure that Gordon's year can be characterized as "awful" -- a 22 yo moving to AAA, but, even without that, Schoop is an All-Star one year removed. He can field, hit and needs a good year. Rather Schoop than Dozier, easily. Torreyes is, on a per-pound basis, the best player ever released by the Yanks. Wait until you see this guy play, or being tossed in the air by Sano. And, on Cron, barring injury, Austin gets cut. Sure, we miss Mauer's OBP, but I won't miss a BA of loopers, dinks and hoppers that dump into LF. A guy who hit 30 HRs has potential to help. Sign a reliever, maybe a LH DH/OF/1B bat and roll the dice. If still in it in July, hire a posse at the deadline and see what happens.
  7. If Astudillo is playing all nine positions in a game, the Twins are a lousy team for sure. If you thought Cesar Tovar looked funny in catching gear, imagine what Astudillo would look like in CF. We'd be better off putting him in a Duluth Pack and having Buxton cover two positions while portaging him.
  8. As a longtime Twins fan, it makes me MORE interested to follow the team in 2019, just because I will have multiple individuals to follow and rout for -- from young coaches, to young players, to new strategies, new approaches -- there will be a lot to look at, analyze and cheer for. Just have the feeling that some of these guys will have success and we will want to celebrate that as a cutting edge improvement, not just for our Club, but maybe a trend-setter in the industry of baseball. And, it is an industry.
  9. Twins hire a teacher as pitching coach. From the videos, he's plugged in and ready to teach, help, critique and learn. What's not to like?
  10. Well, it looks like the Reds, Angels and maybe even Rangers have finished up their process of hiring a manager, and it sounds like they took none of the Twins' leading candidates off the board. Meaning, the Twins should likely be able to land their first choice.
  11. Nothing to see here. Sano backs over a policeman at 3:00 a.m. outside a Club, breaks his leg, drives him to hospital, happens to know him, and despite reports of being detained and having run over the officer on purpose, all is well. Take out some cash money, talk it over. "Aqui nos reglamos." Just another day in the life of Miguel. And, he's going to be A-1 come February, after leading the league in SO%. Whoever the Twins hire to manage, they better be able to handle Boqueton when it comes to sweet talk in Spanish.
  12. Mills is over 60, isn't he? Makes Molitor look young. Like the pedigree of Espada, especially two years watching Cashman up close. Speaks Spanish. Must be fluent in analytics, Puertorriqueno would help with Berrios and Rosario.
  13. San Pedro de Macaris, they know how to take care of their own. It went from diminishing the income of that community substantially to Miguel being the selfless hero in 24 hours. I'm not saying I know what happened, but, I would like the name of the law/PR firm because they sound incredibly effective. If only they could coach Mr. Sano in baseball....
  14. Too early to speculate on names but, I suspect the main qualities they are looking for will be: 1. Relationship guy a la Dave Roberts and Joey Cora. 2. Analytically up to speed, if not adept. 3. Able to work with young players, maybe even speak Spanish. 4. Someone who focuses on the process, but holds everyone accountable within the established parameters. This will be very interesting for sure. And, very much needed, IMHO.
  15. Agreed, anything but the ridiculously irritating noise they shoot at fans from the techno-speakers ringing the stadium. A guy and a drum is nothing compared to the corporate blather blasted down at the plebes who they hope to control and separate from their cash. Hate that, and the super-sized scoreboard. Fakey crap is not a winning play at a stadium.
  16. Salt in the wound for me. We needed this last October, and before that, in .... 2006/09/?, God, how many years did we lose to the Yanks in the playoffs?
  17. Problem is that Detroit and Chicago have young players now in the Majors that look like real keepers: Chicago on the mound and Detroit in the field. Those teams are looking young and exciting, while the Twins are running out prospects that aren't quite up to MLB standards in terms of production. So, windows open and close for more than just Minnesota that will impact Fall baseball opportunities.
  18. Nah, let him play. He's working on his stance, his leg-kick, his process, the kid is a human being and deserves a chance to develop at the pace that he requires. Anything less is manipulation and has terrible optics for the Twins, which will not be missed by their players.
  19. If Buxton has a new batting stance, a leg-kick, or whatever he's been working on -- I don't see why you wouldn't bring him up and have him give a try against MLB-level pitching. Extra year of control is just not a thing this far out on a guy who has under-performed and been injured.
  20. Looks like Mollie will have to actually play Astudillo behind the dish. That will be a fun game to watch.
  21. There is at least one "big" candidate to play 1B next year. La Bocaton.
  22. Molitor exudes passivity on the bench. Will anyone be held accountable for a play like that? Or does he cerebralize it all away?
  23. I was at the game. Second row by Twins dugout. The kid barely reached 90-91 on his fastball. His off-speed stuff were his better pitches, but when they were up, they got hit. All in all, looks like Kevin Slowey disease: lots of foul balls, some dunk hits and line drives all over the place. Going to need an out-pitch, Kid.
  24. Yeah, and when I go out on the town whoring and drink too much, it's a tribute to a college friend who lived hard and died young. But, then again, I don't throw 94 with a quality change-up. Especially not at 41. And, I can't drink like I did at 31. So, I get it, and Fernando has been shooting arrows into dome roofs for more years than I have hairs on my head. While the save situation has collapsed, the sky never has. God Bless him. And, I hope the Twins rough him up soon.
  25. Admire Rodney's career, his firm fast ball and light touch on the change-up. At his age, it's like "Grampa got game". But the arrows, the skewed hat, the non-chalance as the 9th inning got crowded with opponents on bases, sorry Fernando but, you lost more than a game with all that. Good luck on the Coast, I do like the way A's play ball.
