  1. By the time Dozier's relatively inexpensive contract is over after 2018, the Dodgers will clear about $80M in other salaries such as Gonzalez, Ethier, McCarthy, Kazmir and a few others. They would have plenty of cash to resign him if he is still producing.
  2. When things went south for the Nats getting Sale, I was really hoping the Twins might be able to move Dozier for Giolito+. Obviously that can't happen anymore, so I would be fine with Deleon, Alvarez and one high upside A guy (versus 2 fillers). I hope you are right. I also enjoyed the other thread.
  3. You had to go there... Don't the Red Sox pretty much always wear "throwback" uniforms? They never went through any of the hideous phases that the pale hose did.
  4. Nats are in a much different spot than the Twins are. It's easier when you still have have Harper, Scherzer, Strasburg, Turner, et al. They have to be thinking now is their time.
  5. How much, if anything would it take to get Urias?
  6. That's what I was assuming as well, but if Esco barely crawls above .600 OPS does it matter?
  7. A couple of quotes from KlawChat about some of the players being discussed: 7/21/16 Jack: Last week you said something like Jose De Leon doesn’t have a strikeout (or swing and miss) weapon. I’m trying to reconcile that observation with the fact that he keeps getting strikeouts. He’s been over 30% K% in both AA and AAA now. He’s got a high minors strikeout pitch that won’t translate? Can you give us some other examples of guys who generated these kinds of strikeout totals in the high minors who couldn’t translate any of that success to MLB? Klaw: History is littered with guys who had adequate K rates in the minors and couldn’t hold it in the majors. Sean Manaea punched out 146 in 121 innings in his first year in pro ball, but that hasn’t held up. I like De Leon as a prospect but see a limited ceiling because he lacks that out pitch – and you’re not telling me he has an out pitch, or what it is, but are just pointing to a stat line. 7/14/16 Nic: Noticed you had Kohl Stewart as an honorable mention in the top 50 piece. With him being in Double-A what kind of ceiling do you currently project for him? Klaw: I think he projects as a 3 or 4 starter. If you want ceiling, he’s going to have to miss some more bats, which he has the stuff to do but has not done, instead generating a lot of groundballs (which is still a good thing).
  8. Trade Dozier for SP help, put Polanco at 2B. Escobar at SS with Vielma an option if Esco doesn't get his OPS back close to .700. I wouldn't be opposed to going defense first with Vielma if he can at least OPS above .600 and he is as good defensively as some claim. Gordon at SS sometime late 2018 or 2019.
  9. Who has questions? John Sickels - Projects as a regular shortstop with an above-average glove who will hit for average, show some pop to the gaps, and steal 15-20 bases a year. Pretty sure I read that Keith Law thought he would be at least average at SS. If you've seen something to the contrary, please share.
  10. I really don't understand the hate on Gibson. In 2014/15 he was a 2.3/2.5 fWAR and 2.0/3.2 bWAR player. While that isn't great, he's still a solid starter. He stunk in 2016, but also wasn't healthy. He will still be cheap, so I see no reason to non-tender him. In my opinion, he still has some upside and they would be crazy to cut bait on him.
  11. And 2" taller than Prince Fielder.
  12. ESPN's David Schoenfield posted trades for all 30 teams. He proposed the Twins trading Dozier straight up for Lucas Giolito. This is the type of trade the Twins need if they move Dozier. Giolito made a few starts for the Nats and is a potential #1. The Nats have shown a willingness to spend money on FA so they may be willing to part with their top pitching prospect. I think the Twins should make this trade if the Nats are willing. http://www.espn.com/blog/sweetspot/post/_/id/76381/a-trade-for-every-team
  13. Thanks, I understand now. I thought he meant it would "block" their reconstruction efforts. Couldn't figure out why Gammons would say that.
  14. Can somebody please explain Gammons' tweet? Am I supposed to take it that he thinks bringing those guys back into the organization is a problem? I would think all of those guys have pretty good reputations, outside of Hunter's political views.
  15. Why is it not possible? They went 83-79 with a starting rotation of Gibson, Pelfrey, Hughes, Millone, Santana, Duffey and Nolasco making most of the starts. Nobody had what I would consider a "career" year, outside of maybe Gibson. I am guardedly optimistic that Santana, Gibson, Santiago, Berrios, May, Duffey and Maybe Hughes might be able equal that group. If they can get their ERA closer to 4, I like their chances of .500.
  16. ZiPS projections for the 2017 season has the Twins at 81-81. http://www.espn.com/mlb/insider/story/_/id/17964821/zips-2017-standings-projections-cubs-odds-repeat-surprise-contenders-more-mlb Excerpt on the Twins: "Minnesota wasn't expected to be a juggernaut in 2016, but the Twins also weren't supposed to be this bad. They'll improve simply from the good ol' "Plexiglas principle," and some of their young players should continue to improve (especially Jose Berrios)." I would be very happy with that if the lineup continues to trend towards younger players and our pitching has a semblance of respectability and future upside. 81-81 without a focus on letting our younger players play would not impress me.
  17. They don't have time to watch a Vikings game. GM meetings are this week. Watching the Vikings game would be an utter waste of time. At least that is how I felt about 3:30 this afternoon.
  18. As I've been reading this thread and the one about the 2017 rotation, I keep thinking back to something that was discussed in one of the recent G&G podcasts. According to BR: AL Runs Allowed - 2016 #14 - Twins - 873 #13 - Rangers - 746 #1 - Blue Jays - 653 There is a bigger gap between #14 and #13 than there is between #13 and #1. The Rangers team ERA is 4.41. I don't think it is outrageous to think that five pitchers from this group can break that threshold next season: Santana, Gibson, Santiago, Duffey, May, Hughes, Berrios and Mejia. Last season the team ERA was 4.07. Just getting to #13 level gives the Twins a pythagorean record for the season of 76-86 for this season. I don't think .500 next year is out of the realm of possibility.
  19. Vs RHP SS Polanco 1B/DH Mauer 2B Dozier DH/1B Vargas 3B Sano RF Kepler LF Rosario C Murphy CF Buxton vs. LHP Buxton Polanco Dozier Sano Vargas Kepler Plouffe Rosario Murphy Sprinkle Esco in occasionally. Play the kids!
  20. I know it probably feels like 6 years, but Span was the CF just four seasons ago.
  21. Game was televised on MLB Network.
  22. Happens to pretty much every player.
  23. Thanks Duffy. Took away a DP.
  24. Last inning Dick says the Twins hope Sano turns into a batter that mashes LHP. He then goes on to say he hasn't become that yet. His evidence is hitting .273 vs LHP vs. .244 overall. He has 4 HR and 10RBI vs LHP and 16 HR and 40 RBI vs RHP. Surprisingly, he has over 4X the PA vs righties. vs. LHP: .273/.420/.527 vs RHP: .238/.317/.468 Seems to be hitting LHP pretty well to me. I know, how dare I use actual statistics to make a point.
