  1. Maybe I missed it, but other than this year, when has Gibson been in a pressure filled run of games where the Twins were trying to make the play-offs? High leverage doesn't get much higher than that. Just my opinion, but this may be the first time we have seen him in those situations. And it doesn't appear that he has changed from his norm much, if at all.
  2. All season long, I've been thinking that this is not an "improved" team so much as it is an "improving" team. Kind of a psychotic, up and down, step forward, step backward thrill ride. Which seems to describe .500 baseball. I wouldn't say you are a bad fan. Just good at observing what these guys are doing.
  3. I've always interpreted WAR to kind of be applied over the course of a season.. Simplistic, maybe, but in that light.... 162? Good lord.
  4. Three and four years ago in ST, I got the chance to watch TK work with Sano on one of the smaller infield skins. Interesting couple of sessions a year apart. Both in how Kelly works, and how little progress Sano had made over they year in between. (He got hurt after that.) By my eyeball test, Sano may never be 'average major league caliber' defensively. I'm not piling on here, but there has hardly been any discussion on why folks think he could be called up to play 3rd. That would be a grave mistake at this point. He's young, and it could work out someday, But not in the very near future, imo.
  5. This is Hick's last option left, correct?
  6. Needing to hear a different voice maybe, and losing the clubhouse are not one and the same. Probably one of the reasons a student does not keep the same teacher through out their entire school career. I think Ron is a very good teacher of the game. He allowed players multiple chances to work through their spots even to the point that when they may have fallen apart, he was accused of not making a change quick enough. Perhaps not the best managing move for wins and losses, but certainly not dysfunctional in a way to treat your players.
  7. Kind of miss Harmon being 'around' the Twins these days. Seems like he was never that far away.
  8. Great read. Nice to see the moves put together with the WAR angle.
  9. I was trying to recall whether it was Harmon or Jim Thome that made it a point to make sure that the signature was very legible. I watched Thome take a great deal of time to sign a ball for us at a breakfast benefit one morning. He just had to make it right.
  10. I don't get it. How many times does Liriano have to show that he is not 'fixable', before people stop thinking that he can return to 2006 form or even sniff what he was in 2010? He is comparable to DeVries, or Hendricks at this point. 3rd or 4th starter at best. Is it worth the down-side?
  11. Casilla, during that time, was showing a lot of promise to become a competent middle infielder. That has since changed, but I think many people thought that Casilla had a huge upside before Hardy left. And there always was the injury cloud that seemed to follow JJ arround. That combined with the desire for speed probably tipped the scales, at least in my mind.
  12. Wow. That's a lot of jing for a guy fresh off of TJ. And why would he be on the Cub's short list?
  13. Good for him! I hope the Marlins don't gut the team and at least give him a chance.
  14. I wonder sometimes if they don't audition some of these guys in September with high hopes for increasing their stock as trade bait.
  15. So maybe a Pavano lookalike (when at his best - think 2010) or a touch better, if only because of some consistency. Not a true number 1, but mid to top of the rotation guy. 60% wins, 3.7+/- era and 200 innings. That would be better than almost all of what was run out there last year.
  16. This is quite simply, very good news.
  17. He was also very good in 2008, 2010 and a decent chuck of the Twins season (when they brought him back up from the pen) I don't think he is going to post a sub 3 ERA and a 10k/9 2.5 BB rate like '06, but I think its entirely possible that he could post a 4.00 ERA if things break right (along with some really outstanding preformances) I kept getting sucked into that every other year hope that he would find something to build on, too. But it looks to me like he is headed for a more consistent stretch of blandness with an ERA hovering around 4.8 +/-. Occassional run into a stretch of good innings. But one always feels like the othe shoe will drop at any minute. Wow. Feels like I just described Cole DeVries.
  18. How many years after the great season (2006) have to pass before people stop thinking that Liriano can replicate that success? Six? Eight? His best days are gone. No reason to think that he can get that form back. As for incentives? If he couldn’t get it together last year, in a contract year, why would one think he would respond to incentives? I wish him well. But he needs to be someone else’s headache.
  19. Interesting question. I think it’s more of a frustration, as both a Twins fan, and a baseball fan, of not being on even playing field with the Yankees. Whatever the reasons. Booing Jeter doesn’t seem to me to be the right response. He has been able to keep his position and play relatively well throughout his career. Regardless of whether a guy is or is not the top at his position every year, to play for so many years creates statistical relevance. Now if you were able to put one of the Steinbrenners on the field…
  20. A couple of years ago at ST, we saw Gibson pitch an inning or two. Although a little raw, he attacked the strike zone in a way that I haven't seen another Twin pitcher do in a long time. I really hope this kid gets a chance to blossom. Large upside.
  21. Whew... Thought I was on the Strib site for a minute there.
  22. I am curious about the Vavra (infield) and Ullger (outfield) pedigrees for their new positions. It lends itself to having one full time and one part time hitting coach if Vavra stays at the major league level, which is kind of unclear at this point. Probably too soon to tell. I agree that keeping Cuellar and Bruno may have had more to do with this than many will give credit. It will be fun to see who, if anyone, comes up from within the organization.
  23. You have to wonder sometimes if a different "look" might be part of the answer. Easy to say that 'we' could go out and get Francona, but why in the world would he want to come here? Until some arms get into the rotation, and some solid defense is stabilized up the middle, oh, and a 3rd baseman would help, and.... on and on it goes. Be careful what you wish for. Your solution might be even worse.
