  1. I agree with that. I think you have to add in the lost seasons for Buxton and Sano, as well as the drafting of high school players as to why they may be a year behind.
  2. I'm hopeful on Berrios and Duffey to go along with all of the current solid options, but I'm also assuming jon Lester's decline is soon.
  3. Well having two aces to go along with their more experienced prospects is what I think the difference is. I still think the Twins are set up to be on par with the cubs starting next year.
  4. There's a bit of difference between acquiring a 21 year old and him developing into a Cy Young winner than a 27 year old with 5.46 ERA magically figuring out how to pitch. Either way, both teams were lucky to an extent in both cases. This thread asked why the Cubs are ahead of the Twins in their rebuild, and getting lucky on Jake Arrieta is a big reason why.
  5. If he's got the skills to play CF, then he's got some serious value. If he had more of a track record, that would almost sound like a top 10 prospect to me.
  6. Sure, apparently everyone saw his talent back in 2012, but there's no way anyone could predict him being this good, and that's my point. Yes, the Cubs put themselves in a good position by acquiring a higher upside guy, but that difference between being good and being Cy Young is icing on the cake, or in other words, luck.
  7. Arrieta k/9 with Bal:7.0 Hughes k/9 with NYY:7.6...so yeah.
  8. You're honestly saying that a guy with a 5.56 ERA over 4 seasons transforming himself into one of the best pitchers in baseball has no element of luck? Sure he had talent, but his perceived upside was similar to that of Phil Hughes at the time of his signing. The difference between good(Hughes) and great (Arrieta) is a lot of luck.
  9. You make a good point. I guess what I'm trying to say is that the Cubs would look smart if Arrieta turned into a good 3.50 ERA guy, but for him to turn into one of the best pitchers in baseball still looks smart, but also really lucky.
  10. This is similar to what the Twins did with Phil Hughes. The only difference is that Hughes was already a better pitcher. This might have something to do with coaching on the Cubs part, but more likely is Arrieta just figured something out, which is pretty lucky.
  11. A guy with a 5.46 ERA in 358 innings turning into Cy Young has to have something to do with luck.
  12. I understand what you're saying, but Jake Arrieta had a 5.46 ERA over 4 years in Baltimore, and now he's Cy Young, so some amount of luck has played into the Cubs quicker rise.
  13. Well there were a few playoff seasons in those years. It can be difficult to not go through a rebuilding stage when you have only average payroll and low draft picks (unless you're the Cardinals.)
  14. I don't think Ryan had the advantage of having a guy like Jeff Samardjiza already on the team. And if he did have someone equal to his talent, I'm pretty sure he would jump on the chance to trade him for Addison Russell. And besides getting lucky on Jake Arrieta, I think the main reason why the Cubs are still playing right now is due to their high draft picks. It's just that their picks have been college guys and the Twins have picked high school guys. Let's see where they stack up after Buxton and Berrios get settled in.
  15. Where would the Twins be right now if Buxton and Sano hadn't gotten hurt in 2014? They probably would've been on the MLB roster for the entire 2015 season. I (obviously) think that would have made a big difference. I don't think we overrate our own prospects too much, and I am very confident that they will catch up to those two teams as early as next year.
  16. If they move Trevor May back to the rotation, then they definitely need another guy in the back end to go with Perkins and Jepsen. Tyler Clippard would be nice.
  17. I think Paul Molitor was blindfolded when he made some of his pinch hitting decisions.
  18. I don't understand how anyone can justify even throwing out the possibility of trading Buxton at this point. Unless you're getting a Trout, Harper, or Correa, I don't see how it's worth the risk of him turning into the greatest player of all time (slight exaggeration) for another team.,
  19. Hicks has turned into a very valuable player for the Twins. A guy who is a very good defensive outfielder and who I believe has the capability to hit 20+ HRs with a full season is pretty special.
  20. Yeah I think trading a guy with as much talent as Arcia has at a time when he is at his lowest value would be a terrible decision, so I'm hopeful that the Twins will give him a chance to see what he can do next year and then go from there.
  21. The ultimate "crafty lefty".
  22. That could potentially be a problem, but I wonder if really struggling for a whole year for basically the first time in his career would change his perspective on how to act and make the most out of his opportunities that he gets in the majors. And like you alluded to, the Twins could possibly start the year with Rosario, Hicks, and Arcia in the outfield, and then go with what's working best when you add Buxton back into the mix.
  23. I'd rather give those ABs to Arcia. I really think this year was a fluke, and after an offseason, Oswaldo is going to realize he needs to alter his approach a bit and get back to being a more complete hitter like he was throughout his minor league career.
  24. I actually wouldn't mind having both Santana and Nunez as the utility guys next year. I like Nunez's solid all around skill set. I guess the question is whether or not they would rather have someone a bit cheaper to fill the position.
  25. No Escobar or Arcia?
