  1. You forgot yertle McConnell but even with him, yep.
  2. Easily the best thing trump has done(even if it's just talks at this point) since home alone 2. The local media and political groups are pretty surprised but real encouraged. Where does sos fall on chain of command if everything goes to ****...
  3. Yeah, and i wish I felt that way as well. Part of the reason I read and post here once in awhile is I appreciate a level headed analysis and insight from people whose opinions and experience I respect and learn from. But...I think many are still not reading what is happening. All of the conventional wisdom that we've been able to accept and fall back on in the past is what has gotten us to this point. This whole election, people here and everywhere have been saying, "This won't happen because x, over this cannot happen because y. And it never could because z." But something drastic shifted last week, and it wasn't a general sentiment. No that sentiment has been there and been festering for years. I would like to believe that precedent has some, well precedence here, but I do not have a shred of faith in that anymore. And in a weird way I don't even find Donald trump at fault completely. This reminds me of two quotes/scenes from game of thrones. The first is daenerys, when asked how she expects to rule, replies, "I'm not going to stop the wheel, I'm going to break the wheel." And I think that is exactly what some powerful people now have essentially as their goal. The second is from Ramsey who said, "If you think this has a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention." Perhaps history has shown us that neither apocalyptic mindset plays itself out. I hope I am being hyperbolic.
  4. Oh man Friday night lights and six feet under are two of my favorites ever! But I'd second veep, no one has mentioned it but Orange is the New black is really entertaining and has a lot of interesting layers. Also American horror story gets a bad rep and for some good reasons, but I think the first season is still pretty good. And on that note American crime story I liked as well.
  5. You keep saying the same things but I feel like the conclusion you keep reaching is the opposite of what you are trying to prove. The ec is letting or even "forcing" candidates NOT to focus on the entire country. The exact opposite is true. People make a big deal over the almost 50% of registered voters who didn't vote. What about adults who don't even bother registering? Trump, Obama, Bush, they were elected by like 20% of the population. Make everyone earn votes in ca, not just give dems 54 ev just because of sf and la. Make republicans earn votes in Texas. Texas which kinda undermines your point about candidates focusing only on cities, which if that were true I'd imagine the democrats would do better their considering all the large metros there. I think a direct, or even more direct vote would increase voter participation in those big states, as well as small. You seem to like the theory of the ec much more than the actual way it affects elections, just as I like the theory of socialism much more than I like the actual implications it causes.
  6. It just seems asinine to argue that somehow the ec represents more voters. I think a proportional ec rather than winner take all makes more sense, though some flaws in that idea have been brought up already. And no Levi, 50% of the country doesn't live in la, sf, and new England. Though im sure there are plenty of republicans in those cities/regions who would like to think their votes affected an election, just as there are plenty of liberals in utah and Montana and any red state who either vote and feel it's pointless or just don't even bother anymore. And that's true inversely as well. I think the ec promotes apathy and have since before i could vote.
  7. Yeah I live in one of the reddest states, utah, and so I know my vote counts for nothing on just about every level. I'm not sure why most of my neighbors should count as "more" than mine. Cause I live pretty much in salt lake and they live in Provo or price? My votes were practically as meaningless when i lived in Washington state, though while being a "lock" as far as presidential races go, statewide it is much more diverse.
  8. Call me crazy but I am a HELL of a lot less concerned with these protests than that this man-who just ran the most racist, xenophobic, misogynistic, outright hateful and devoid of anything resembling anything like empathy, logic, or depth, the most toxic(and that is really saying something) campaign- has put together his team with people possibly even more spiteful and vindictive than himself. And they have the full backing of a bats hit crazy congress in both chambers, and may well determine the next 3 sc justices. People who would love nothing, nothing more than to undo any bit of good that has come from the past 8 years and replace it with whatever in their sadistic minds has deemed fitting. Yeah, I'm disgusted by donald trump, really many people aren't to whatever extent. But people like gingrich and rudy and bannon and a slew of others who's names aren't as recognizable scare the blank out of me. And please don't try to convince me that Paul Ryan, who by most accounts seems like a fine enough man whom i don't agree with much on politically, and mitch mcconnell, who doesn't seem that fine anyway, have them "under control'. They won by being terrible. Not sure how the reasonable can not assume that they intend to stay that way.
  9. Hillary won't win because she won't concede any ground to the left. In the primaries. Idekwtbwt. I kinda hope she loses to trump and both parties canabalize themselves but I'm sure it will lead to a more right wing nation. Sucks for an actual liberal.
  10. Idk about fa's but seattle and miami both gave huge contracts to their own star players recently. however both those teams are pretty terrible, but not because of those contracts.
  11. Huh wow thats a pretty signifigant difference in war, almost all his numbers were better this year save a few less innings(and a fair amount of k's(and pitching in the nl, so does that include batting)) I don't think he'll drop off that quick either it just seems like something we all complain about the twins doing(though usually its extending not very good players)
  12. Honestly as good as he is I just can't believe everyone thinks giving a 5-6 year deal to a 32 year old coming off a career best season would be a good idea. Nope.
  13. Embarrassing, eh, a little. The only really embarrassing part was chaffee trying to explain some of his votes. But i think its telling that at least 3 of the 5 were republicans at one point, 2 of them not too long ago. I think it shows the depth of the party, even if webb and chaffee are obviously not polished politicians at all, so not the best at showing that idealogical diversity. And to smerfs question there are more eloquent democrats, but honestly why bother even running this cycle? Bernie or biden are the only other candidates(or possible candidates) with even a chance of winning the nomination. Omalley I'm sure is just getting his name recognition up for future endeavors.
  14. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GdvD-4XI2w4 "I am very very grateful to be on this stage with this distinguished group of candidates tonight. And what you heard tonight ... was a very very different debate from the sort of debate that you heard from the two presidential republican debates. On this stage you didn't hear anyone denigrate women, you didn't hear anyone make racist comments about new American immigrants. You didn't hear anyone speak ill of another American because of their religious beliefs. What you heard was an honest search for the answers that will move our country forward, to move us to a 100 percent clean electric energy grid by 2050. To take the actions that we have always taken as Americans, so that we can actually attack injustice in our country, employ more of our people, rebuild out cities and towns, educate our children at higher and better levels, and include more of our people in the sociopolitical and economic life of our country. I truly believe that we are standing on the threshold of a new american progress, unless you become discouraged about our gridlock in Congress, talk to our people under 30. You'll never find among them people who want to bash immigrants, people who want to deny rights to gay couples. That tells me we are moving to a more connected, generous, compassionate place, and we need to speak to the goodness within our country."
  15. Hmm, maybe. Its tough for me to believe someone as smart as her would do something like that out of incompetence. Agree about sanders.
  16. Also I don't watch much tv anymore, mostly just some sports, but this post coverage. They just keep talking about bernie saying "we are sick of hearing about your emails". True I guess, but i don't know that its such a minor issue. We don't know what all happened with that, but its not nothing. Especially considering how strong of a stance she seems to take on edward snowden. I guess it was a nice moment in that the 5 on stage weren't tearing each other apart, but i think we should care about that, cause it sure seems pretty shady. And i mean, she's not just a politician, she's a clinton. Shady is their middle name.
  17. See idk, i can't actually see him winning but there are a lot of moderates of all sorts i know and even on this board that would vote for him, and a lot of folks who will only vote for someone with an r next to their name, but are completely put off by basically everyone on that(republican) stage. They all were very civil which is good to see. Also i think his weakest points tonight to me were 1) talking about Scandinavian countries as models right off the bat. some truth/logic to it but we're not a smallish fairly homogenous european country. 2) that awkward answer relating to syria, which i think was a sorta followup to a jim webb answer. not gonna lie i don't remember the specifics, just that it really seemed like he wasn't prepared to speak about foreign policy except broad generalizations, just kind of wants to be an isolationist(which i also don't completely disagree with 3 )this one is kinda like that job interview, "whats your biggest weakness?" question. he started at about an 11 shouting and like i said seemed to treat it as a campaign rally. he toned it down or at least reigned it in as the night went on, and so he like bottomed out at 9.5 energy. so off-putting maybe at first, but energy is good. the gun stuff i think helps him, though i think omalley made a good point that no one up there is or has been trying to pass legislation to make all guns illegal(even though i know that is the goal of some on the far left, which is where sanders falls i suppose, and thats not his end game regarding guns) just somethings gotta change. also i don't think this country as a whole will ever either understand or accept what socialism is and how it shapes our politics. we struggle with much simpler ideas than that. myself included.
  18. Yeah flip the dodgers and bluejays and I'm right there with ya. Maybe not, it is kinda funny seeing the dodgers as the sharks of baseball. Also i just realized that every team except the astros primary color is royal blue. huh
  19. Nah no one on that stage, even with the awkward or cringey moments like the block of granite explaining some of his votes, comes close to how dangerous the kind of rhetoric that comes from trump and probably 3/4 of the republican candidates is. Obvious bias, but I think o malley made a solid point of that in his closing remarks.
  20. I think he looked better as it went on, but yeah I don't agree with your take completely, however it did seem like he treated it more like a campaign rally rather than a debate. And yeah hillary will usually look good because she's a good politician, but lines like telling wall st street to cut it out are just so eye roll worthy idk. Still beats the hell out of whats on the other stage. Surprised webb didn't pull one out and fire a few rounds in the air and demand his ten minutes.
  21. Not to mention I think most peoples frustrated reactions is less to do with what Utley did(though thats a big part of it) and more to do with how the umpires blew the call in everyway possible and baseball doubled down on that.
  22. I don't think anyone is saying you shouldnt be able to break up double plays, provided you actually make a baseball play, like a slide. These aren't even slides, they're as levi keeps say chop blocks, or just tackles or flailing recklessly into guys legs. Maybe the rule isn't as black and white and is up to the umpires discretion. Thats ok, thats what its like in every sport. I guess I know hockey better than most sports, but I'd compare it(though not apples to apples) to checking. Normal check, just fine. Launching yourself like a missile at another player, especially the legs/knees? Yeah thats not hockey and its illegal, either by penalty or suspension.
  23. Well I have directTv, I just missed a few games because where I live they were only shown on mlbnetwork, not fs1 or any other channel. Apparently thats not gonna be an issue anymore but I still think its weird to have one league on tbs and the other, well wherever they end up. Especially when "wherever" is sometimes a channel that even people with cable, directTv, etc dont get.
  24. It kinda epitomizes adding insult to injury. Utley's play(not even gonna call that a slide) was bs, the call on the field was bs, the review was bs, all of it.
  25. Suspended next two games. http://deadspin.com/mlb-suspends-chase-utley-from-games-3-4-of-nlds-1735978393
