  1. 'Despite what someone said above, spring training appears to indicate that middle infield will be massively improved.' let me preface this by saying I was fine with Casilla leaving...but we're talking about how the defense has supposedly improved. There were 24 2Bs who played at least 700 innings in the majors last year at 2B. He had the 3rd best UZR/150 behind only Ellis and Barney. If we expand that to 550 innings, 28 2Bs played that many and while Casilla was still 3rd, Carroll was 7th. Now, I like Dozier, but he's learning a new position and defense at the 2B spot was very good last year for us. So not sure how anyone can saw our MI will be MASSIVELY improved cause of a few ST games when we've very likely downgraded at 2B defensively. Spring training indicators are, well, not very indicative of what goes on during the actual season
  2. How do you figure our defense will be better? Hicks is great, but Hicks/Parmellee isn't an improvement over Span/Revere. Our middle IF is still bad. Our 3B is still bad.
  3. Optioned to single A. Edit...nevermind, someone else pointed it out.
  4. If not he sure should be...the guy was amazing on defense. Not quite Wizard of Oz amazing, but surely really close behind him.
  5. Kubel says hello...
  6. I have zero problem believing they'd do that. Though I'd guess it'd be Meadows or Frazier
  7. You don't think a more regular lineup helps a team gel more both offensively and defensively? Just a question, cause I would have to think it would.
  8. Gardy, during an interview on ESPN1500 after the 2011 season, said some of the young guys got defensive with him, not wanting to listen, and he even said they complained about him, 'throwing them under the bus'. I used to have this link and I've posted it a few time on the MLB site, but no matter how hard I try to find it again, I can't.
  9. I'm sorry, but respectfully, I can't really be any clearer on what I'm saying.
  10. The question was need versus choice...simple question is, did he NEED to do it? Cause the argument seemed to be playing backups as much as we do is due to starters needing rest or backups needing to get some time in...but this is at the beginning of the season....so he does it even when it very likely isn't needed, but because he wants to. Where's the need for the starters to rest? And the point I made is accurate...in the first 20 games there were 18, 19 different lineups (and that's just when I stopped looking for it last year...at the beginning of last season I said, 'I wonder how many different lineup we'll have to start the season'). No matter how you break it down where you show stability on some spots, that's how it went. You want to read into what I'm saying, all I'm saying is...18, 19 different lineups.
  11. okay, I get that Morris was amazing for us in '91, but he only played for us one season. When people say things like 'The Twins walked away from him without even a phone call.' Why wouldn't they? He was a Twin for only one season, he wasn't some longtime Twin.
  12. So I guess you are never critical of anyone in any job that you've never had?
  13. Do we need 18, 19 different lineups in the first 20 games of the season? That's what happened last year.
  14. About Hicks being named starting CF: "The guy has earned it," general manager Terry Ryan said. "I find it almost humorous that guys are talking service time and starting the clock. The guy has earned it." Ryan said the Twins have never held a player back for service-time reasons since he took over as general manager in 1994. He said it wouldn't be fair to the player or his teammates if they deserved a roster spot. "Can you imagine if we sent somebody out who did what the kid did?" Ryan said. "And I had to look at [Josh] Willingham, [Justin] Morneau, [Glen] Perkins, [Joe] Mauer and those guys who are trying to win, and I'm going to stop that guy? I just don't believe in that."
  15. Thanks for the info...it makes my question make even more sense...why is it still just 25?
  16. Just an off the wall question. How long ago was it that MLB went to a 25 man roster, or has it always been that number? I ask because back in the day, we didn't have 5 man rotations, we didn't strictly adhere to pitch counts, we needed less of a relief corp, so we had more options off the bench....or so it seems. Shouldn't they think about adding to the active roster limit? One, maybe two more players?
  17. I believe they want Hernandez to eventually be a MLB starter, do they not? If that's their plan, it's best he goes down and start instead of relief up here.
  18. He likes the #2 guy to sacrifice bunt, move guys over...etc. That calls for giving yourself up a little more than you'd want a hitter like Mauer to do. Mauer is our best hitter and our best hitter with RISP. He shouldn't be sacrificing his plate appearances. He should be batting 3rd.
  19. He'll be put out there just because Gardy can.
  20. Not only that, but Mauer's numbers with RISP are fantastic as well. People say, well, they're only a little bit above what he normally hits overall, and that statement is all well and good (if not completely true when looking past BA), but the fact remains it's still better than anyone else on the team hits with RISP, whether it's much above what he normally hits or not.
  21. Stolen our youth? Kidnapped our children? Yeah, it's horrible. These children get drafted to play baseball and if they end up even somewhat average (by MLB standards) they'll get paid MILLIONS of dollars...
  22. Then take into account we lost both two very good defensive OFs and our two table setters on offense (same guys of course). That will likely subtract from the win column. Imagine what the Twins team ERA would have been without the top notch defense of Span and Revere...
  23. Over Longoria, Cabrera, Beltre, Lowrie and Middlebrooks...all of whom will still be in the AL next year playing 3B? Unlikely
  24. There weren't any decent players available when he signed Correia to begin with?
  25. Yeah, I remember when Ryan pointed that out...he had a look on his face like he had just taken a bite of the sourest lemon ever. He said something like 'you guys are always saying we don't go after strikeout guys and I think our draft shows we've done that.'
