  1. yeah, I just can't see low-80s in 2014...I mean even if everything you say happens, and its' all possible, it's still only their first year in the bigs. The adjustment, the ups and downs, but that's another reason why I want Hicks up ll year. He can get that out of the way and that's one less guy we'll have to have dealing with that next year and the year after. Just my opinion.
  2. 'What must happen this year is a sense that the team has made significant progress towards contending (not just competing) in 2014.' I don't see how we can look at things now...realistically project next year and think things will be much different than this year. Even if Arcia and a couple other make it here, there's still the learning curve. 2014 is gonna be another bridge year.
  3. For me, it's THE best day in sports. Nothing beats opening day for me. For the 1st 15 years of my military career, I made sure I took that day off...then deployments got more frequent and that stopped being possible...but I was off yesterday...and now that I'm retired from the military, I envision never working on opening day again... :-)
  4. I'm confused...is your post meant to counter mine or emphasis it.
  5. we promote slower than any team in baseball over the last decade...do ALL of our players have a slow learning curve?
  6. I guess the belief that this guy was a first round pick for a reason and that maybe a guy that is that high of a draft pick shouldn't take 6, 7 years to make the bigs?
  7. payroll will continue to drop as minor leaguers are brought up to be the starters and we have a team consisting of Mauer and a bunch of pre-arbitration and 1st year arbitration guys on the roster. The money saved isn't going to be spent later.
  8. How is having a first round pick spend 5 years in the minors considered rushing?
  9. people like to embrace the term 'old school' as if it's a redeeming quality and, at the same time, label anyone who tries to look just a little past the 'traditional' numbers as a 'stats geek'. As if 'stats geeks' with their 'silly new age stats' somehow have an inferior outlook on the game and by using the term geek it solidifies that belief.
  10. Exactly...but he's old school :-) Let's not put RBI into context, let's look at the final number and make judgements on those.
  11. Willingham with RISP last year: .287/.424/.535 in 205 plate appearances. 8 HR/73 RBI/46Ks Mauer with RISP last year: .372/.500/.514 in 192 plate appearances. 3 HR/72 RBI/22Ks Who did better with RISP? Mauer did...even with Josh having an overall career year for him. p.s. These aren't new age stats.
  12. And over the years, even worse guys in the 2 spot than Revere...your Puntos, Tolberts, Casillas, etc... not to mention the 9 spot.
  13. How do you know that's why he got the contract he did? Think the Twins brass was stupid enough to believe he was a HR hitter after all previous seasons showed other-wise. There's more to the game than HR and there's many reasons why a player is given the contract he's given. For example, Mauer being the hometown boy done good...in other words, he's a draw for crowd...a money producer. 1st catcher to lead the major in BA 1st AL catcher to get a batting title (now three times) 1st catcher to lead the AL in BA/OBP/OPS and 1st player to do it in almost 30 years at the time he did it. Highest BA for a MLB catcher ever...and highest BA for a Twins in over 30 years. You think it was about one season? He was gonna get paid even if he didn't hit the HRs...which is really the only thing truly way out of norm for him
  14. Not screwing with you in the least. BTW, notice I'm not the only one saying it...and I like how you ignored the comparison to Willingham...
  15. RBI totals, by themselves, tell you nothing. The way he hits with runners on base and the way he hits with RISP tell the story. There's no way to twist those....they are how they are.
  16. It's good to know there is someone out there that knows the reason why people like something better than those people themselves.
  17. 'it's fun to see how a team like the Minnesota Twins can beat a team of bigger, stronger, more physically gifted superstars like the New York Yankees.' Are we allowed to do that? :-)
  18. His statistics absolutely support that
  19. 9 bucks? Surly you can't be serious! :-)
  20. Baseball is a game of strategy...a thinking man's game. It's also a game of precision. Overall, it's a very calming game...for the most part.
  21. oops, double post...see below
  22. well, I'm most definitely in the minority, I must be mistaken...
  23. If people believe giving the hitter who does best with RISP less opportunities with RISP will make the team score more runs, than yes it's best if he bats 2nd. I'm not anywhere near convinced that's true...especiallywith the way Gardy likes to use his #2 hitter.
  24. If you say so...I'm glad those convince you. My point was he'll have less opps with RISP batting 2nd. What stats show that isn't true?
