  1. Talk about a risky player to get. And he'll be a whopping 30 years old! And why try if we waste his first two years when we aren't competitive. And do we want to sign him for the years he'll require with his injury history :-)
  2. yeah, sometimes it's nice to add a pitcher who has actually proven he can do very well at the major league level. Like you said, we haven't drafted and developed an elite pitcher in forever. When we trade for minor league pitchers, they still haven't proven anything at the ML level. When you toss out the ability to actually get a player you've seen have very good success at the ML level, you're playing way more into the 'hope' game than signing a guy you know can do very well and hope doesn't get hurt or digress too much.
  3. And no one else will look at that unicorn and spend more and commit more years to get him :-)
  4. And since the ones that remain will be sucked up by teams willing to spend the money and commit the years needed to get them.
  5. And by play any IF position or corner OF position you mean Gardy can put him in the lineup at any of those spots and he grabs a glove and goes out there and mans it. He doesn't play any position at even an average level. He might be able to do that at 1B if we lose Morny. I think we should keep him, and start him, but I think he should play one spot. Doumit isn't an OF either. Gardy putting him out there doesn't mean he's good enough to be out there.
  6. He's had a bunch of quality players over the years. He gets a lot of credit for taking those players to the playoffs while playing in a weak division that almost always had weaker teams than ours (before 2011). He does deserve credit for doing that, but it's not like he took a bunch of no talents to the playoffs. If that was the case, why isn't he doing it now?
  7. When you figure most MLs start their careers at 23 or 24, and often their first year isn't counted as service time cause it's a partial year, it makes sense most FAs are 28 or older, since teams control them for 6 years. It basically means to get a true quality player, we'll have to sign a guy till he's in his mid 30s, which many don't advocate.
  8. WHAT? You base that on what?
  9. So, only 7 more years to wait? Might as well try to convince Mauer to lift his trade clause then.
  10. Well, put me down as not wanting to wait another 20 years and counting to MAYBE make the playoffs. And the assumption that we'll THEN go out and buy some free agents is all speculation based on no history of him doing so whatsoever, unless you mean carpy free agent that did nothing to help us. That's a main problem. The assumption that he WILL go spend on quality FA in whatever predicted time frame we'll be competitive again. If we're using the Pirates model, we're looking at 2033 or so?
  11. He just set an Oakland As record for consecutive saves.
  12. I think Plouffe ends up at 1B when Morny is gone and Sano comes up. When both of those are a reality, he should move. He's a bad defensive 3B, but could pull a Garvey and end up a pretty good defensive 1B after moving from 3B.
  13. Pirates haven't been in the playoffs for twenty years and counting. I'm not sure using them as a model is a good idea. I don't think anyone is saying building our team using the farm system isn't the best way, either.
  14. I want Ryno to be the next Twins manager.
  15. He's the whole package. Best fielding 3B in the game already (with respect to Arenado, who is the best in the NL) with very good offense to boot. No real weakness in his game.
  16. I'm not sure I'd say he 'finally' figured it out. That, to me, makes it seem like he's been around for quite some time and it finally clicked. He just now has a seasons worth of games under his belt at the major league level. We have a middle IF with an OPS over .700 who plays very good defense at 2B. I'm glad he's working out cause I've been a fan of his for a few years now and I took a lot of grief for it last year :-)
  17. I rarely worry about rookie stat lines, especially in a season with no expectations. There's an adjustment period that goes on not just on the field but off the field too.
  18. Unfortunately, I don't think they care about justifying anything they do or don't do. He'll be back with us next year and for years to come.
  19. okay, I'm out of this particular argument because it's an exercise in complete and utter futility.
  20. exactly.
  21. Yes, because you risk the rotation being much worse because you didn't sign a guy who could very well be huge upgrade all because of money that wouldn't hurt you at all to spend or hinder your ability to spend more. It's not semantics at all. That's risking your rotation's effectiveness. Risk isn't restricted to money.
  22. Yeah, I love the guarantee that we shouldn't spend till 2016 when we're competitive as if that's a guarantee.
  23. Because not taking the risk guarantees you don't get a quality player with that money. You keep talking about that money. How is that money going to hinder anything? What's it going to stop them from doing? Nothing. Where's the risk in spending it if it won't hinder us at all, even if the play doesn't work out?
