  1. I don't believe he'd be in the majors if he had been drafted by us. Funny thing is, I looked at his numbers in high school and Buxton's numbers in high school. The major difference was Trout actually was already showing some HR power, so it makes me wonder how he was missed by so many teams when Buxton, who had lesser numbers against easier competition was viewed as the supposed best player in the draft this year. Having said that, I wasn't that familiar with him coming out of high school, and I'm not really an advocate of drafting toolsy H School OFs in the first round anyway, so I'm not gonna dog the Twins for missing him. I wasn't, however, thrilled with the Gibson pick. Too risky with injury history before he was drafted. I will, however, continue to dog the Twins for not getting Pedroia cause I wanted them to draft him with their first pick in 2004...and their 2nd pick, 3rd pick, 4th pick, 5th pick and 6th pick... :-)
  2. Torii Hunter was rated as the 3rd best defensive RF in baseball this year...so he's much better than average out there in RF. They are also getting VMart back. The also played up to their ability in the 2nd half with a .579 winning %. Their 1-5 right now is AJax, Hunter, Cabrera, Fielder and VMart....much better than ours. Their first three pitchers all had ERA under 3.75. They are way ahead of us.
  3. 'Three years ago, the Marlins reached an agreement with the players' union to increase spending in the wake of complaints team payroll had been so small as to violate baseball's revenue sharing provisions. But the trade with Toronto leaves the Marlins with an estimated opening-day payroll of $34 million, which would be their lowest since 2008. Oakland had the lowest payroll in the majors last season at $59.5 million.' And, as usual, Loria showed his disdain for the press and fans..'"Not today, boys," he said. "If you haven't figured it out yet, I'm not going to figure it out for you."' Yup, they figured it out alright...you lied to all the fans...since: 'Many fan complaints involved the ballpark, which was paid for mostly with taxpayer money as Loria promised a new era of higher payrolls and more competitive teams.'
  4. Stanton is pissed off that's for sure
  5. 'the kids born after the twins last won a world series are now bar hopping ...'
  6. I think you are seriously understating the talent on that team. Yes, they underachieved in the first half, but they played up to their potential in the 2nd half and worked their way to the W Series. They now get Hunter and have VMart coming back too?
  7. I wasn't arguing with you...I was adding to your argument...or attempting to :-)
  8. Been saying that all along..especially Span.
  9. I think the ACLU certainly walks a fine line. They do a great job fighting for rights even when they are unpopular, but I think it's hard not to argue that many members of the ACLU slant towards the left. They also have become a bit more active in rights than defensive of those that exist. At least it seems that way to me. Current positions of the ACLU include: opposing the death penalty; supporting gay marriage and the right of gays to adopt; supporting birth control and abortion rights; eliminating discrimination against women, minorities, and gays; supporting the rights of prisoners and opposing torture; supporting the right of religious persons to practice their faiths without government interference; and opposing any government preference for religion over non-religion, or for particular faiths over others. Not sure how much of that falls under protecting our rights found in The Constitution...
  10. Would it shock anyone to see the Tigers make a big splash for a pitcher? Say, Grienke? Owner wants to win NOW!
  11. When I saw today's trade the first thing I though of is: Could the Blue Jays have done that trade thinking maybe it could trade Johnson to us for Morneau (as the main pieces, not one for one)
  12. 'The blow it up talk is total crap. we are what 3 starting pitchers and a few bench/ bullpen arm away. not an impossible task to overcome.' is that all? JUST three starting pitchers and a few bullpen arms away? Not like that isn't needing a BUNCH in reality, but also how about a 2B, a shortstop, a 4th starting pitcher (since w only have 1 good one) and maybe even a 3B...
  13. Tigers just signed 37 year old Tori Hunter to a twilight of his career contract that is worth more than the Twins "largest free agent contract in team history."
  14. when does overpaying turn into not really overpaying? If a bunch of teams are willing to 'overpay' does that not turn into market value and become NOT overpaying?
  15. So do you think Illitch simply wrote out a check from his personal (not Tigers) bank account and picked up Prince Fielder and Torii Hunter? Actually, if I remember correctly, that's exactly what he did for Fielder...He definitely told his GM to go get him, period.
  16. There is no evidence that the Twins went $20M over budget for payroll. At most, they went $8M (the cost of Pavano), and based on their own statements, it was probably closer to $4M. I don't personally have any problem with the Twins running their business like a business while Ilitch treats his like a fancy toy with super neat-o expensive options. But let's not pretend that the Twins ever did anything close to what Ilitch is doing now. There's also no evidence to suggest the raise in payroll happened to bring in final pieces missing from the 2010 team for a run...
  17. But they didn't go for it...they gutted their middle IF and bullpen and signed Nishi. They actively downgraded their team. Normal raises, along with Mauer's contract kicking in is what happened...but they didn't go for it. What 'final pieces' did they bring in?
  18. They get him and they get VMart back. Add that to the fact that they underachieved in the first half this past season based on their talent. Should win 100 games this year I'll take the under. maybe...but I don't think there's a team in our division that comes close to matching their talent
  19. To expect them to do that, one would have to assume their goal is to win a W Series championship...as opposed to creating a team to be competitive within the division
  20. ahh. shouldnt there be a ruling by some third party arbitrator to decide what the standard formula should be? I always prefer fangraphs myself...they seem to be just a wee bit more accurate, IMO.
  21. WAR is serious business, no time for funny. If he truly is a former Chief, he'll appreciate a joking jab from another former AF SNCO...
  22. Don't mind Chief. He's perfectly open to, and objective on, 99.99% of subjects. This is the .01. I thought I was just being funny :-) Having said that, I don't think they pulled formula's out their behind and just made stuff up either... No one wants to accept it now. We'll see how people think 10, 15 years down the road.
  23. wow!
