  1. It's a convenient excuse not to go after any quality FA players...or to defend the FA for not doing it. Chances need to be taken....cause there are plenty of players who play very well past their supposed prime years along with those who don't.
  2. A player's prime is basically 26-29,30. Most players don't become FAs until they are at least 28, 29. So, every FA signing for any decent player is going to have years past their prime.
  3. To include Ryan himself...
  4. There is nothing old school about this line of thinking...so far none of these guys have been signed...there is nothing wrong with collecting as much talent as possible when you can...and to assume that if you don't spend on one guy, that you will for sure be able to sign another guy, makes no sense.
  5. Him getting it is one possibility. Another possibility is that his manager, teammates or the combo let him know how wrong it was and he was told to do the political dance.
  6. No, Maholm didn't. They showed a replay of when Maholm hit him back in June or whenever it was.
  7. Gomez took a wild swing at the pitch before the HR pitch, stumbling out of the batter's box. He stared down Maholm all the way back to the batters box, and when he hit the HR, he started doing all his antics the whole time around the bases. I don't know how ANYONE can defend that.
  8. Again, as a fan, it doesn't matter to me if he earned his small FA contract or even exceeded it a bit. The problem most had with signing him is we needed a huge improvement in our rotation and Ryan went out and got the guys he did. Nice he lived up to low expectations, as we sit with the worst rotation in baseball.
  9. What does one have to do with the other?
  10. and the 21 dollars is over three years instead of one year.
  11. I think it's fair to also acknowledge that although Morny's offense has been a bit lagging in Pitt, his defense likely saved them at least one game that I know of. The defense can't be overlooked.
  12. I agree about KC...and they have more good pitching on the way...and one just showed up, Ventura...Zimmer is just around the corner...
  13. And blaming Smith for all the issues, while giving credit for two division championships to Ryan while Smith was GM, seems odd too.
  14. Might run into the problem he did last offseason...just can't give away the team's money :-)
  15. Seems like you are correct: 'Ryan said he needs to do his job and acquire some starters for next season so Duensing and Swarzak can stay in the bullpen. "I would like to think I'm going to be able to get Gardy some people here," Ryan said before the game. '
  16. You have to have a darn fine pitching staff to only have 11 nowadays....which TB has...but even 12 pitchers, the point is still relatively the same. Dodgers in '61 had like 9 pitchers, same with the Cards in mid 60s, yet I'm pretty sure it was still a 25 man roster rule. That leaves some room from more strategy.
  17. My post had nothing at all to do with platoons...just expanding the active roster. You know that right? In the AL, if you have 13 pitchers, then you have to start a DH and 8 position players, that leaves three backups. I enjoy double switches, I like the strategy that used to be the norm but has been lost due to having to have so many pitchers on the roster.
  18. They had the payroll space last year...Management said money wasn't an issue during last offseason...it's rinse, lather, repeat.
  19. To go slightly off topic, I think it's way past time for MLB to expand the active roster. With 5 man rotations, reliever specialists and pitch counts the norm, 25 man rosters are too small.
  20. Michael Rand at Randball did a follow up on Ryan's statement that, ' “I think you are mistaken when you don’t think $21 million is huge,” Tuesday (Terry Ryan and 'huge' contracts) edition: Wha' Happened? | RandBall | StarTribune.com
  21. “There’s going to be a lot of competition for quality, there always is. But we’ll be in the mix,” Ryan said of the free-agent market for pitchers. “We pursued a bunch of free-agent pitchers last year, and there was a number of them we didn’t get, for whatever reason.” Twins' search for starts never ends | Star Tribune

  23. But Cuddyer is a little better overall defender and can play positions Willingham can't. Makes him, overall, a more valuable player....regardless of their similarities on offense. On top of that, ti's not like the saved money was put back into the team, so why would the salary difference matter to the fans? Oh, and Cuddy is a team guy first. If Weiss is thinking of shutting him down to help preserve his batting title chances I think Cuddy would likely get pretty ticked off about that.
  24. I posted the link to that story on here already.
  25. People in the organization, including Pohlad himself, HAVE said that they go year to year and money doesn't carry over. This had been discussed and is well known. Why that is being challenged now is curious.
