1. He is striking guys out at a much higher rate than he was in our organization (12.6 K/9), he hasn't gotten close to that since A+/AA in 2021 when he was in the Texas farm system. I think we'd take the walks with the peripherals looking good. Going 8 for 10 on "hold chances" is pretty good for a guy they got off the waiver wire.
2. He needs to fully transition to being a reliever at AAA. Even before this season it was his likely outcome, now it's probably his only path to the majors.
3. I think it's time to shake up the bottom of the rotation, Alcala and Funderburk aren't getting it done and it's time to admit defeat on Jorge. Hopefully Coloumbe will be back soon, and maybe they can give Travis Adams (already using an option this year) or try out Misiewicz for a bit. Watkins seems to make brutal calls regularly as the 3B coach, but it's hard to say how bad at the job he is compared to the rest of the league as I don't have any idea which teams have good ones. It doesn't seem like he is improving at the job, though.
4. Holy barnacles, what a two inning stretch this has been!
5. I'd like to see a retrospective done on this article in a couple months' time to see if the hypothesis checks out. At that point if Paddack is continuing to defy the odds, the criticism thrown at this analysis is far more valid.
6. Another clutch hit for France, walking off today's game with a HR. I appreciate a hitter who drives in runs even when their stats on the aggregate aren't great.
7. France has been surprisingly clutch and his RBI total shows that... but the rate he hits singles at reminds me of Arraez. It's not that bad, but where are the XBHs? It's also too early to be writing any conclusions, given a slump or a hot streak could completely change the narrative on him. I do wish we had some more depth at 1B, and the high minors (Ford at AAA, Sabato at AA) don't make me feel confident at all.
8. Their defense was bad and lost multiple starters to free agency, and then they didn't sign a single average or better starter on the open market, then spent their 1st-4th round picks on front seven players... that's a formula to have a bad defense again. Nick Bosa and Fred Warner are really good, but what else do they have? At edge all they have is the rookie Williams and then a handful of career backups, and they have the most shallow iDL room in the league. 2nd rounder Alfred Collins is a nice nose tackle but the rest of their guys wouldn't crack most teams' 53 man rosters. Their LBs are all question marks, as is their CB room outside of Lenoir. The safeties are underwhelming too. If Bosa gets hurt again, this is probably the worst defense in the league.
9. Can't win 'em all. Nice to see Royce starting to heat up at the plate. Coulombe's on the IL now, probably should be off the bullpen chart. I find it funny how Trevor Megill went from random DFA scrap-heap reliever to a darn good reliever and the Brewers closer.
10. Are the Brewers allergic to scoring runs?
11. One run per inning in six innings straight... wowza. Unthinkable with so many guys hurt.
12. The 49ers lost a bunch of talent this offseason in anticipation of paying Purdy, and the roster is no longer good enough to go on a deep run. Just look at their defense, how many above average players do they have there... three? I trust Shanahan to work on a replacement, or heck, you trade Purdy (on a $1M salary) to the highest bidder and top what Seattle gave to Darnold (who is a fit for Kyle's system), save around $20M per season or so, and start developing a project behind him. That's just one example. By no means should they do what the Steelers are, but there's got to be a happy medium. Whiffing on Trey Lance shouldn't keep the 49ers from trying to develop another option.
13. The McCusker move will happen tomorrow, and a corresponding 40 man roster move will be needed. Zebby Matthews will also be called up tomorrow.
14. Yup, and before that it was Jimmy Kerrigan, Mark Contreras, Tim Beckham. Mickey Gasper is a destroyer of AAA pitching too. I don't have a problem with giving these guys a shot but so often they come up and are completely overmatched by MLB pitching. I know because I used to be the guy who went "we have to call up player XYZ from AAA because they're playing so well!" but I've consistently seen those players underachieve.
15. This offense went from ice-cold to super clutch within two weeks... there were points in these two games where things looked grim and the hitters powered through and made the comebacks. This looks like a different team... well, the pitching hasn't changed that much but now the margin for error isn't razor thin so it seems like they're better.
16. Wasn't Tonkin already at AAA for rehab?
The teams combined for 31 hits on the game and finished 16-for-39 with runners in scoring position.
Holy barnacles, what a game that must have been! Over 2 RISP opportunities per inning.
17. Nice to finally see this front office make a success free agent bullpen addition... but yeah, now I feel like we've jinxed him.
18. Feels like the hitting and fielding got noticeably better after Julien was demoted. A lot of that is coincidence with some hitters finally heating up, but getting Miranda and Julien out of the infield has done wonders for our defense. Brooks Lee has been leagues better than he was last year.
19. Ryan is rolling, it'd be nice to have another 7 inning start. Nice to have a rested bullpen.
20. He's hit well in 65 PAs so far this year, but he hit .650 OPS in 350 PAs there last year so he has a ton to prove. IMO he's a non-prospect at this point.
21. Just checking in... wow, Paddack is surpassing my expectations. Nice to see this team rolling!
22. I'm not opposed to listening to offers on Ryan, but I'd have to be blown out of the water with the offer given his team control and current performance. Ober makes more sense to move and should still command a fairly high price. If you can get a "top prospect" for SWR, I probably make that move. Given the past 8 years of pitcher development in this organization, the 6 years control of a pitching prospect isn't worth as much as it sounds like it is. They're unknowns who may or may not develop, and Falvey has been keen to keep the rotation stacked with veteran arms over playing prospects (see Ober getting buried in the 2023 rotation at the start of the year, didn't move Paddack this year). IMO you have to assume the pipeline doesn't exist.
23. It's inexcusable that in the time since Big Ben retired, they've taken one legit shot on a QB and that was Kenny Pickett. They should have tried to jump up in the 2024 draft and taken Nix or McCarthy even with as pricey as a trade-up that far would cost them.
24. Reminds me of an article here that suggested that Julien would be a perfect candidate to be traded right after his superb rookie year, and it wasn't that well received but heck that would have looked great in hindsight. What we've seen from him the past year and a half doesn't look salvagable. Miranda has had long enough stretches of competence the majors that I'm not ready to give up on him, but his mistakes have also been mind-numbing. Seems like staying healthy is a challenge for him too.
25. They also have Jaylen Warren who is a very solid change-of-pace RB and also a quality receiver, he'll pair well with Johnson. But they now have the exact same problem in the WR room with one quality starter... except they traded a this year 2nd rounder to get Metcalf and overpay him and didn't get a great return for Pickens. The Steelers really have a thing for drafting a headcase/character-issue WR and getting better results than expected from him, but then have to trade him. Antonio Brown, George Pickens, Diontae Johnson, Martavis Bryant, Chase Claypool (no character issues)...
