  1. Personal example. I don't own a t.v. The price of cable prohibits me getting one, if not the fact that I would also just be watching FSN and Comedy Central 90% of the time and don't like sitting through commercial breaks. But I can get comedy central online for free, without commecial breaks, and mlb.tv, as lousy a product as it is, is still cheap (and no ads obviously - although conceivably that could change). That is to say, I think a lot of the consumers you describe would not buy an individual channel package if its more expensive than mlb.tv. And if cable did somehow make a compelling sales pitch, a lot of those new subscribers will be dropping their mlb.tv subscriptions.
  2. Take a drink every time Bert says "Peltrey"
  3. I give Korea credit for throwing strikes. Limiting walks can get you a long way, esp. if your stuff is lackluster. There were some hard hit balls mixed in that found gloves too, Peralta creamed one right at Florimon. Avila blasted one on a line about 400 feet to center that Hicks caught. But he is paid to make use of the defense and he certainly did that I guess. I noticed Parmelee struggling with the inside comebacker against RHPs in spring training and he struck out on one again yesterday. That is a pitch a righthander should fear throwing to a lefthanded power guy, but guys are throwing him there with impunity. Sanchez looked good. Its easy to forget that he's got 95 mph gas in his back pocket, he doesn't always use it, except in critical situations. Pulled one out against Mauer, eventually putting him away with something off-speed. We didn't need him though. Tigers defense was not as sharp as the Twins all day. right up to Escobar's game winner which was Jackson's ball all the way. Slowey looked like Slowey. 88 mph meatballs, but somehow managed to limit the damage to 1 run over 5. Just another indication of how down the league is right now in scoring. Denard Span looks a little fat.
  4. I was happy to see him use the big guns despite being down a run. There are guys around the league, Fredi Gonzalez comes to mind, that won't do that.
  5. So what you're saying is, the Gophers have a basketball team?
  6. http://i.imgur.com/PhG6wkb.jpg Hm?
  7. Put on your hipster hat and listen to the Hawk ironically.
  8. Did someone say that? I have read through the entire thread and don't see it. Or are you just railing against logic or mathematics based debate in general?
  9. Well here is Mauer's 2-0 swing in the 8th with Hicks on 1st. http://i.imgur.com/goIbTx5.gif Just kidding. You can see its 3-0 and Verlander pitching. That's the double Mauer roped into the left field corner. The real 2-0 swing against Benoit: http://anygif.org/galleries/Cartoons_and_Anime/201304027678844_mauer_benoit.gif The first difference is, the toe comes up as Mauer pivots on his heel, unlike in the first swing where he stays planted. He drops his back shoulder a bit, clears his hips more violently. That's a home run swing, it just happened to careen off to left field as Mauer got under it.
  10. Every winter you hear about lifting with your knees when you shovel, so that you don't throw out your back. Pavano is a reminder not to perch that shovel in y our gut if you're going to plow! Hold it out front!
  11. I think he was trying to pull that pitch. I'll put together a .gif when I get home but it looked to me like Mauer was trying to yank it out of the park, exactly like you described.
  12. I bought SRO tix at the gate 5 mins before game time on a Saturday last year, so I would think on most Wednesdays, you will be able do it. There are so many good sight lines, its a great cheap way to get in the door and as others have mentioned, there will be plenty of openings around mid-game when you can sit.
  13. It was vintage Correia though. You can almost roll a die and fill in the H and R in any given boxscore. He's a low walk, low strikeout, PTC guy and that's what he did yesterday. I don't know how much commentary can be made. If Deduno had done it, people would comment how un-Deduno like it was. If Gibson did it, people would probably wonder where his strikeouts went while praising him for finding the strikezone. It would be much more comment-worthy if it came from one of those guys, that's why you would see more comments.
  14. There's another subtext which seems to be saying that no praise for a 5 IP, 5 H, 1 BB, 1 K line is equivalent to complaining, but I don't see any Correia complaininig in this thread, only tempered praise for a guy who carried a ~7 ERA into yesterday's start and left with a 5.4. Not to mention, the Twins lost 6-1 and the offense stunk. There just weren't any positives to take out of yesterday's game really, unless you're a Boston fan.
  15. After hearing Bert go on about how defense likes pitchers who work quickly, I pulled the last 3 years of qualified starter pacing and FDP-Win values to see if there was any indication of a relationship. Looks like not. http://img401.imageshack.us/img401/6564/fdpwinsandsppace.png
  16. Correia did save his only strikeout for the right time, I'll give him that. Otherwise it was a lot of batted balls that found gloves and not holes or seats. Do we credit him for that?

    The DH

I broke down the career numbers for Doumit, Mauer, Morneau, and Willingham by when they played as a position player, and when they DH-ed (throwing out Pinch Hitting appearances). There's a pretty significant DH penalty for all of them. Might be Wililngham (or someone else) could 'grow' into a full-time DH role though. edit: Just realized I didn't copy in the names. They are in alphabetical order
  18. One thing Justin has done consistently right up through this spring is strikeout. His power might be back but his plate discipline seems to be lagging.
  19. Romero could still be a useful pitcher but his best days are behind him. Teams have figured out that they need to stack lefthanders, not righthanders, against him, in order to neutralize his changeup. Look at his splits.
  20. I tend to remember Vizquel as being a key cog in the great Indians teams around the turn of the century, but looking at the numbers, he was really more of a role player. A very solid one but Alomar, Thome, and Ramirez did the heavy lifting in those lineups. Vizquel's glove obviously was terrific but not good enough to make up for his lackluster bat IMHO.
  21. Yes, MLB should finance a premium pension plan in the same way you or I should finance a $30 thousand new, union-built Chevy instead of an equivalent used Korean car for $5k, "no matter the consequences." MLB doesn't have any higher moral obligation to act irrationally than you or I do just because its rich.
  22. Was the recession part of this deception? The way you are framing this is strangely conspiratorial. Where do you think the MLB does its business? The economy takes a crap, so employers lay people off and/or cut into their wages and/or benefits. Its been known to happen. There are 40 million unemployed Americans willing to work for pennies on the dollar. Labor is a market just like any other. The price has gone down, that's all. No deception.
  23. I thought it was interesting today on the broadcast, Atteberry and Provus got into a smart discussion about Earl Weaver's book, "Weaver on Strategy," where Weaver evidently explained how 10 men on the pitching staff was wasteful because it forbade him using true platoons. Atteberry worked in some other good quotes, my favorite being "if you only play for 1 run, that's all you'll get."
  24. I feel like so many teams improved this past offseason, that somehow the league will combine to finish with more wins than losses, prompting a singularity to form under Yankee Stadium that pulls the park into hell but Batman or Brian Cashman will come in at the last second to plug it and the Yankees will win the World Series and somehow be the underdogs when they do it?
  25. My contention is that its preposterous to expect an employer to pay into a pension fund until it matures, given they are bearing all the risk of it and the economy has gone to crap. Thats equivalent to saying you expect to be employed by the same employer from the day you sign up, until a few years before you retire, since your length of employment is the multiplier, and nothing less than a fully matured pension payout when you retire equals a corporate screwjob. That is such a hard-line, self-entitled and reckless way of thinking, it is no wonder unions have driven themselves into irrelevancy with it.
