    I suspect thats how he's been coached. It is his "job" to look at pitch one strike one, by virtue of his spot in the order.

    Yeah its tough to shake an actors' face and voice once you've seen it. The actress who plays Cersei especially, she just does not deliver with nearly as much venom or impact as I'd imagined her. Nothing worse than a weak villain IMHO.

    I was confused. What I meant is that a sample chapter would be released this fall, according to rumors from last year anyway, not the whole book. AFAIK book six is looking at a 2014 release.

    I had to put the show on pause till I finish the book series. After watching the first couple episodes I realized much prefered my own renditions of Cersei and Daenerys to the actresses. At least they seem to have gotten someone good for Tyrion though. I'll pick it back up in a week or two probably as I'm about half through the 5th book at this point. But then again the 6th book is coming out next fall... 5th book is my favorite too - Reek is one of the darkest and most twisted characters I've ever encoutnered.

    Yeah it was a good 6 inches off the plate. I thought it was interesting that the umpire said after the game that he tried to account for AJ's poor framing. A pretty smart effort I'd say, that he just took too far, and he admitted that he should have called it a ball. So I can't get fired up about it. In fact, the fact that a strike call like this gets people's attention is really a testemannt to how much strike calling has improved since even 2 or 3 years ago when we were still trained to accept that each umpire carried his own personal and amorphous strikezone around in a suitcase from stadium to stadium. At least now there is a modicum of consistency and accountability.

    In one game, that could just be the umpire. The question I would ask at this point is, is there a pattern to what pitches Mauer has the advantage (or disadvantage) over Doumit in framing, both in terms of pitch location and pitch type. For example, maybe Mauer is especially good at framing back-door breaking balls from lefthanders or inside 2-seem comebackers from righthanders, but Doumit gets more calls at the top of the zone or even catches more swings on misses on certain pitches (might sound ridiculous but I think its conceivable). In any case, Hendriks hasn't really established any sort of repeatable pattern where he can be successful so until he does I would think his spot in the rotation is as good a chance as any to give Mauer a day off.

    I would call it weariness. I'm sure after 12 years of dealing with the same reporters after every game, it might have a subconscious effect on your managerial style. After yesterday's game, the reporters had nothing. The players blew that game, not the manager.* *But the manager might have saved that game too.

    IN light of GArdy's postgame quotes, this really seems to be the crux of the issue, which is a shame. By asking Correia to get that strikeout of Gordon, he not only setup his team to blow their lead, but he transferred the blame onto Correia instead risking that he take any blame in the event that Burton or someone more qualified to get a strikeout in that spot were to fail.

    Its very simple. You had a situation that called for a strikeout and a PTC guy on the mound, in a 1 run game. At the very least you walk the guy to setup a double play, but Gardy didn't even do that. It does not compute.

    Hm, he's batting behind Dozier, FLorimon and Hicks either way. The primary difference with Mauer int he 2 hole is, you give Willingham, Morneau, Doumit, Plouffe, and Parmelee at bats before you burn one on Dozier/Florimon. If it were up to me, I'd bat all those guys before Hicks too.

But, come on, we can't bring in a reliever if he will inherit someoen else's baserunner? Is that a policy now?

    Yeah, I actually felt sorry for Correia. 8th inning, runner on 3rd, 1 out, 1-0 game, you need a strikeout. He didn't get it of course, he only has two on the year. Literally anyone out of the bullpen would have been a better choice than Correia in that spot.

    Crucial Situations from The Hardball Times In any given inning, the 4th hitter will have the most opportunities to drive in a runner. Because if he reaches the plate then there is at least 1 runner on base, by definition. In a 1 run game, you play to the 4th hitter (Markakis in this case). And that's exactly what Gardy did. Reimold got his leadoff single, then Gardy got Robertson warming up immediately. He simply passed on Perkins in favor of Robertson. Because you haven't played the 9th inning yet. You don't know that you won't score again in the top of the 9th. You don't know that you'll give up 2 cheap groundball singles again in the home half. The only think you know is that the first runner is on in a 5-4 game in the home 8th, with a very good lefthanded hitter batting 4th. The reason Gardy opted for Robertson instead of Perkins, I suspect, is because he expected the leadoff man man to sac bunt at that point. To play for the tie, basically, and try again in the bottom of the 9th. Because that's what he would have done. Instead, Buck let Machado swing away and by the time Markakis stepped up there were runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1st base open. For the record, the O's had so many things go right that inning that its hard for me to take it out on Gardy. And even so, as others have said, if Robertson can't get one lefthander out, then what is he on the team for? More than anything, I would blame the loss on the GM for leaving Gardy 1 very goo... rock soli... pretty goo... one passable MLB lefthander short to start the year.
