  1. I've never heard of him either. I also don't have a subscription to BA so all I see after clicking on OP is So in lieu of a comment on Vielma or Radcliffe, here goes another anagram lev be mealing
  2. I hope Nolasco and Peflrey stay out of crooked innings and throw into the 8th inning of games on a regular basis. Hughes belongs in the pen IMO, he's been a stud in that role. Barring that, I don't want to see him getting burned by home runs in the third trip through the order, esp. multi-run shots. Pull him at the first sign of trouble and maybe he can put together something like 150/4.00 each year. 3. Joe Ortiz run over by angry motorcyclist, breaks foot, out 3 months http://www.tsn.ca/mlb/story/?id=442715
  4. Derek Holland trips over dog on stairs, injures knee, out till midseason http://espn.go.com/dallas/mlb/story/_/id/10279073/texas-rangers-pitcher-derek-holland-clarifies-fall-was-my-dog-wrigley
  5. I'll definitely keep an eye out for it
  6. Huh, ESPN has a catcher stat CERA (catcher ERA) but it seems to be broken for Suzuki (the stat is arguably broken anyway). 650 innings for Oakland without allowing an earned run obviously isn't right. Baseball-reference has some catcher stats including RerC which stands for BIS Catcher Pitch Calling Runs Above Average. I don't know how its calculated but Suzuki has typically scored around league average or a few runs below. 7. The thing is, the best batters - Mauer, Kubel, Hammer, are made of glass. Kubel will get the Thome treatment I bet. That would put Hammer in the OF everyday. There's just no room for error and not many candidates to sustain them through a stretch where one of those 3 hits the DL. Dozier and Arcia could help stop the bleeding but they're still a bat short IMO. Right now they seem to be hoping for someone to come out of nowhere or Plouffe/Parms to finally put it together. Both long shots IMO.
  8. I liked the signing too, on the merits of Pelfrey's 2nd half. I don't care if he brings a beret or a do-rag to the clubhouse culture.
  9. The results were lousy but I was still impressed by his stuff. 92-94 velocity is better than we're used to seeing and his slider looked good to me. Not sure about the cuverball or changeup. He was wilder than I expected but that might be due to post-TJ recovery. Certainly he had decent command in the minors so I would bet on that improving.
  10. Do people want depth or not? There is probably no thinner position in the system than SS. http://twinsdaily.com/content.php/2609-Twins-Organizational-Depth-Chart-Middle-Infielders Escobar > Bartlett > Bernier Geewizh, Bartlett and Bernier are 34 and 33. Too old to play SS.
  11. I was half joking, if that wasn't clear. The market is so weak for SS's I doubt a guaranteed 3rd year is in the cards for Drew. That said I still like him as a definite upgrade in the short term and long term. LH-swinging middle infielders who can hit don't come around every year.
  12. 3 years with a 4th player option, get it done TR.
  13. What is greater, beast mode or mental mode?
  14. 1st K http://www.brooksbaseball.net/pfxVB/numlocation.php?pitchSel=434378&game=gid_2013_04_01_detmlb_minmlb_1/&batterX=7&innings=yyyyyyyyy&sp_type=1&s_type=3&league=mlb 2nd K (looking) http://www.brooksbaseball.net/pfxVB/location.php?pitchSel=434378&game=gid_2013_04_01_detmlb_minmlb_1/&batterX=24&innings=yyyyyyyyy&sp_type=1&s_type=3&league=mlb 3rd K http://www.brooksbaseball.net/pfxVB/numlocation.php?pitchSel=434378&game=gid_2013_04_01_detmlb_minmlb_1/&batterX=42&innings=yyyyyyyyy&sp_type=1&s_type=3&league=mlb FWIW I give Hicks a pass on striking out against JV in his first 3 PAs. But it wasn't the umpire screwing up his compass, he just plain got beat. I'd add, if 3 Ks in that game was what sent him into a 2 month slump, then maybe he doesn't have the fortitude or aggression to stick as a regular. Would love to be proved wrong though.
  15. Eh not bad but I prefer Daft Punk. They're going to be big someday mark my words.
  16. They're certainly not over the moon about Arcia, Dozier, Hicks, Mastro, Pressley, Pinto, or Sano. Significant upside there. Rotation desperately needs another arm IMO.
  17. I guess Hrbek qualifies as a Minnesotan too.
  18. Well its that time of year again, time for the Genitalia-Freezing Classic. Tonight we have hard throwing righthander Black Jack Morris facing off against soft-tossing southpaw Charlie Leibrandt. It should be a good one! Some things to think about 1. Think about how bad the Braves were last year. 97 losses. They were outscored by 141 runs. 2. Think about how bad the Twins were last year. Only 1 hitter to hit more than 20 HRs (Hrbek). Only one pitcher to win 10 games (Tapani). 3. Think about Minnesota kids. Jack Morris and Greg Olson were Minnesota kids once. Would they be here today if it weren't for Bob Allison, Harmon Killebrew, and Rod Carew? 4. Think about the combined sopping power of 55,000 homer hankies and the biomass that will be expelled into them and flagged around the heads of surrounding humans tonight. 5. Think about this cool dome. Man, I hope we never tear it down. Watch the game here. First pitch around 7:05 http://instasynch.com/rooms/Willihammer
  19. He has gotten this far, maybe its a non-issue at this point. Heck R.A. Dickey has no UCL at all.
  20. Its not often you get the chance to poach the no.2 starter off a team in front of you in the standings. Either Santana or Ubaldo would be terrific signings.
  21. THT article on why teams agree to opt-out clauses. http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/article/why-teams-and-players-like-opt-outs/
  22. Frontloading would give the illusion of better value in the final years only by accelerating the inflation of the price of a "Win." In other words, the back end of these deals would be better values because by the time a player reaches year X the price of a Win would have already risen to 12 million instead of just 10, even though the player performs the same. Back loading on the other hand makes the final years appear to be lousy values only because they have helped stall salary inflation and keep the price of a Win rising only to to 10m in year X instead of 12m (or whatever). There's a shared incentive to backload and I have to think anyone who bucks this trend gets a phone call or communication from MLB about it.

  24. Are you Denny Hocking? This is not meant as snarck. It just so happens that this little tiff involving Hunter happened after a Thursday Sept 29 game against KC. Denny Hocking played for the Royals that year. Were you hanging out in the opposing locker room at the time?
  25. I am a little surprised that all of the 5-6 big names left seem to be holding out for multiyear offers. How many teams does that exclude? How many millions in 2014 salary (and beyond)? Look at Kuroda - 4 straight one year deals. He was one of the first players to sign this offseason. $16m, done. December 7, Merry Christmas. He'll make $53m over these 4 years. How much would he have earned if he'd bargained for a multi year deal after the 2010 season? 25m? 30m? Its risky but seems like the climate might be conducive to that strategy.
