  1. Well the Dodgers picked up Arreabeunaciaobellasonnybono today, maybe they wouldn't be a player. I'm all for stocking up on promising Cubans, I'm just skeptical that this guy is any good, from what little I've read about him. I would hate for it to turn into another Nishi situation.
  2. Abreu is, without much argument, the best Serie Nacional batter of the past 5 years, maybe 10. Diaz isn't even in that conversation. I guess I'm missing something.
  3. Good to hear about him and Carew.
  4. What's the over/under on his new contract? I'll wager 2 bills. Possibly 2.5 if the Yankees and Dodgers get into a bidding war and box out teams like the Twins.
  5. I am a little unclear, maybe someone can clarify. If every team passes on Bonifacio, then he becomes a free agent? Meaning, his 3.5m contract with the Royals becomes null and void? edit: what JD is asking
  6. Well, if any TDer wants to mock up picks 30-60 I would read it, just to get an idea of who the 2nd pick could be. I also think you might be the *First* person on the Internet to do a mock past the first round.
  7. They agreed to terms with Nolasco on Nov 28 and with Hughes on Dec 5. That's just a tiny bit aggressive compared to the average peak offseason FA signing. ^ Taken from jay's blog post: http://twinsdaily.com/entry.php/4670-Are-the-Twins-Missing-Out-on-Starting-Pitchers Its only the Tanaka/posting system drama and the lack of precedent for this FO that makes it appear more aggressive than it actually was. In any case, it was the right strategy IMO.
  8. Anyone care to speculate who might be available with the Twins second pick? (~38th overall I believe).
  9. Who should the Twins trade in order to get Bonifacio? Escobear?
  10. This would please everyone wouldn't it? Those of us who'd like to watch a better product would get a front of the rotation talent. Those concerned about the profitability of the product and breaking minor league talent into the rotation would have a starter coming off the books in each of the next 5 years. Everybody wins. I guess there is the question of - would Ubaldo go for 4/64. At this point, I think most of us would be surprised if he could do better than that anywhere else.
  11. Bebé que no tienes que ir a Florida para cumplir amirite?
  12. There's definitely a weather factor too. 5 of their 6 worst attended games last year were in April. Those tickets were sold. Nobody's making that mistake this year, still lots of good tickets for the dang home opener. http://minnesota.twins.mlb.com/min/ticketing/opener_tix.jsp
  13. I say this every year but I think team Cuba could surprise some people. 3 pretty good lefties in that rotation and if the timing is right, they could match up favorably in 3-4 game series within the division, with Detroit being the only real RH-heavy lineup. I think Abreu will rake. Dunn is always a threat (contract year). Eaton, Viciedo, Garcia... definitely upside.
  14. 10 Hail Mary's and a 7 games of Twins baseball. I would pay upwards of one dollar to see that post.
  15. I want sharks, not more piranhas. JMO
  16. In terms of wOBA from players 33 and older since 2011, Hammer ranks between Carlos Beltran and Paul Konerko. He has been the least durable, and obviously the knee is a big question mark, but if he puts together 550-600 PAs I think the Twins should offer a QO and try to extend him. He is a perfect fit.
  17. Yeah working for me too now. Lights out from 8:30-8:50 though
  18. If Thorpe were American, finishing his final year of high school and entering the draft this year, where would he go?
  19. Why does Andy, a heroin addict, shoot the unconscious heroin addict in this scene? According to one Neil Morris:
  20. Am I the only one getting this right now?
  21. Umpiring aside, the improvement to BB%, K%, and OPS all corresponded with 2 things: Moving down in the order, and swinging more. Through Apr 13, he OPSed .155 with 20 Ks against 3 walks in 46 PAs. His swing profile looked like this: http://www.brooksbaseball.net/plot_h_profile.php?s_type=2&gFilt=&pFilt=FA%7CSI%7CFC%7CCU%7CSL%7CCS%7CKN%7CCH%7CFS%7CSB&time=month&player=543305&startDate=04/01/2013&endDate=04/13/2013&minmax=ci&var=swing&balls=-1&strikes=-1&b_hand=-1 From Apr 15 on, when Gardy moved him down in the lineup, he OPSed .597 with 21 walks and 64 Ks in 267 PAs, and his swings/pitch during this time was: http://www.brooksbaseball.net/plot_h_profile.php?s_type=2&gFilt=allmlb&pFilt=FA%7CSI%7CFC%7CSL%7CCU%7CCS%7CKN%7CCH%7CFS%7CSB&time=month&player=543305&startDate=04/14/2013&endDate=02/03/2014&minmax=ci&var=swing&balls=-1&strikes=-1&b_hand=-1
  22. Hicks was among the most passive hitters in baseball last year. He swung less than 40% of the time. He struckout looking 1 out of every 10 times he came to the plate. He has to become more aggressive, not more passive. The pitching is too good at this level to take a lot of strikes
  23. A 3rd factor could be pitch framing. As teams have gotten their hands on pitchf/x data too, and started teaching their catchers how to frame.
  24. Couple things. In 2001 MLB started training umpires to tighten up on the sides of the zone, ie. to not call as many strikes that are off the outside corner. Then starting in 2008 when pitchf/x was implemented, self-evals showed they weren't calling the low strike even though it fit the rulebook definition ("bottom of the knee"), and have called a lot more of them ever since.
  25. This is a really interesting read. http://www.hardballtimes.com/the-strike-zone-during-the-pitchfx-era/ TL;DR the zone that umps call today is lower, and tighter than it was in 2008. Overall, its bigger. And it looks like pitchers are slow to take full advantage of the (new) low strike.
