1. I'd love to see Gordon or Nola gone before 5, so the Twins can choose between Jackson or Kolek. I'd be thrilled with either one.
2. Sheesh, didn't realize Pentecost had a 36 game hitting streak (still active) http://www.tuscaloosanews.com/article/20140527/NEWS/140529762 On the year (58 games) he's batting (.426), hits (100), doubles (21), home runs (eight), walks (23), stolen bases (15) and RBIs (54)
3. Sort of a sobering read: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1778406-how-tim-beckham-went-from-no-1-overall-pick-to-forgotten-man
4. Well I'm in St Paul and receptions fine for me for the most part. ESPN 1500, broadcasting a couple miles up University, not so much. Glad they aren't the carrier anymore.
5. Steak dinner for Mike DiMuro!
6. Gardy with 2 Pinch hits - both times abandoning the platoon advantage.
7. I'd wager Hicks misses that one too
8. I might be in the minority but I prefer Pinto cut into Hammer/Kubel/Parmelee/Arcia's playing time, and only spell Zuke once every 5 games or so. Suzuki has been a borderline all star.
9. If Mauer's hurting the team so bad, blame Gardy. Its not like he's short on 1B alternates.
10. All the more reason he should try to take all the walks he can get. The best possible payoff of swinging, is a single.
11. So, fine him for taking strike 1 or leaving a runner on base? I thought you wanted him swinging at strike 1.
12. Go to baseball-reference. Search the index finder for team batting split "swung at or took 1st pitch." Sort by OBP
13. I tuned in briefly yesterday to the Giants broadcast and was surprised to hear Jon Miller calling the t.v. broadcast. I had forgotten how soothing it is to listen to a game called by Jon Miller. In fact, Jon Miller's voice might be the single most relaxing thing to hear after a long week of work.
14. Well the Twins lineup is up: 1. Brian Dozier ® 2B 2. Joe Mauer (L) 1B 3. Trevor Plouffe ® 3B 4. Chris Parmelee (L) RF 5. Josmil Pinto ® C 6. Jason Kubel (L) LF 7. Eduardo Escobar (S) SS 8. Aaron Hicks (S) CF 9. Samuel Deduno ® P http://www.baseballpress.com/lineups
15. He seems to be handling righthanders a lot better this year.
16. Agree. I would prefer a 95 mph+ fastball and a swing and miss CB that can be thrown for strikes, at minimum. And I'm not sure Kolek's breaking pitch measures up, although there's no way to be sure.
17. Myers was a better prospect than Arcia ever has been so the scenario probably isn't realistic. My point is only that trading a corner OFer is different than trading a 3B (or starting pitching for that matter). Its a lot easier to supplant corner OF with a decent producer than it is at 3B or SP. See: Marlon Byrd, Ibanez, Morse, etc.
18. The Royals will get a comp pick for Shields, and then they can add even moar prospects. If the Twins want to trade a top corner OF prospect - Arcia maybe, for David Price, I'd certainly listen. They can always go get a Nelson Cruz or Mike Morse on the FA market.
19. That's just it. The Royals traded a wildcard for not one, but two proven commodities (I dont' know why everyone forgets about Wade Davis - currently sporting a 16.8 K/9 out of the pen). That's 5 years of combined team control - 2 for a fringe ace and a workhorse, and 3 for a fringe starter but a bullpen stud. The Rays got 7 years control for a question mark who is currently batting .684. If anything, I think your Pokemon theory applies more specifically to pitching - just look at the Rays. How badly could they use Shields and Davis now? Cornoer OFers OTOH are the most fungible commodities in baseball.
20. What makes Nola's changeup a plus pitch, and not average or plus-plus? Whiff%? GB%? Break? Velocity difference from his fastball?
21. I think so. Tthe correlations of K-BB% and K/BB to some popular stats for starters in 2013.

ERA FIP x FIP SIERA K-BB%-0.60767 -0.77164 -0.89135 -0.96261 K/BB-0.53073 -0.66139 -0.74294 -0.77169

Basically the tradeoff's worth it if you drop your walk rate by more than you drop your K rate.
22. Its maddeningly inexact. We have the tools to measure pitch break, spin rate, and extension, bat speed, etc. But we never get hard figures. Heck you're lucky to find raw batted ball counts or whiff counts in most game reports. I don't know what it is about scouting but everyone seems to want to stick to their 5 "tools" and their vague definitions of them.
23. I remember reading a while ago how Denard Span was happy to be able to play shallower than he played in MN. Well, he posted pretty strong UZR numbers in MN but has been up and down as a Nat. Might be that Revere is doing the same thing, and costing himself big time UZR points by missing a few gappers that he would have caught if he'd been positioned deeper, as he was in MN.
