  1. Nobody's in favor of jettisoning guys with option years (Dozier, Hicks). The guys out of option years - Worley, Parmelee, Escobar, Deduno, Plouffe - call them works in progress if you want. What's the attrition rate on these sort of talents? Certainly its higher than say, free agents. The A's can use their 40 man roster as currency to hoard these types of players. To their credit, they've done a decent job recognizing the guys who might pan out (but they haven't been perfect either - see how Sogard and Reddick are doing?) The Twins aren't in the A's position. They shouldn't be wasting many spots on these sort of players. Most will bust. When you carry a lot of them, you will probably have a lousy product.
  2. I'm not saying Parmelee's career's over, but Parmelee was put on waivers, and the A's passed on him.
  3. Don't bother, the Twins already got something cooking
  4. Was that Arcia out there? I thought for sure a ballerina got on to the field
  5. I guess Gibson's confident about this perfect game he's got going.
  6. Hammer sure looks dialed in, great to have him back.
  7. When the neighbors gives you lemons, make lemonade?
  8. No its not very often the two best hitters on a 25 man are catchers. More often they are first basemen or corner outfielders.
  9. http://www.sacbee.com/2014/06/01/6448626/as-recall-stephen-vogt-option.html It sounds like the A's called up this guy for his bat. Being another catcher seems to be incidental.
  10. Started June strongly: 3-4 with an HR. Batting line sits at .304/.388/.492 Should we expect Garver to displace Knudson at New Britain soon?

  12. Michael Kay said he asked Gardy about it and Gardy's response was "we don't have the body of work on him yet."
  13. The Twins have been in on Gordon for a little while now. But, Gordon's got a bunch of steam - Chris Crawford has him going 3rd overall, for example. Did the Twins initially like Gordon because they believed he'd be a good underslot value? And how much is that still the case. In other words, would Gordon's camp even take an underslot offer anymore? (Do you know if the Twins have been in contact with Tom Gordon?) Or do the Twins just have Gordon at the top of their board?
  14. I agree with upside. Highest upside IMO Kolek Jackson Touki Rodon Holmes Kolek takes the cake with Clemens type upside. I think Jackson can and will stick behind the plate. My crystal ball sees him turning into Mike Piazza. Touki > Pedro - the hammer, the quick arm and electricity is either there or else its a damn good mirage. I see Rodon as a poor man's Sabathia upside, maybe 210 IP and 200 K's for a good 10 year stretch. Holmes I'm less sure about. I think his curve and cutter are tremendous but wonder about durability. If the health gods take care of him, I could easily see him turning in a 7-8 year stretch resembling Halladay's prime.
  15. Cool read. I pity the RHBs who have to stand in against a 95 mph+ flamethrower who delivers at this angle: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/u/images2/KolekStride.png No. Way.
  16. For god's sake stop trying to peg that outer half with a fastball - its not working.
  17. Tanaka - best ERA among AL qualified starters vs Correia - worst ERA among AL qualified starters
  18. Correia is missing his spots early
  19. I'm starting to accept the possibility/reality that Kubel isn't going to be the same hitter he was. I still think a guy like him deserves a long leash, but maybe that leash has run out. I do want to see Pinto play more.
  20. FWIW the YES guys said Mauer was pulling balls in BP today
  21. How does Mauer beat the outfield shift? Easy. Bunt to the 2nd base hole. RH starters will fall off to the 3rd base side and force 2nd basemen to field the ball. Eventually 2nd basemen will abandon the up-the-middle shade and start playing Mauer to bunt. At this point Mauer employs phase 2: Handcuff bloopers. With the 2nd baseman playing in, Mauer simply dumps balls into shallow right field by squaring up pitches on the trademark. This will force the right fielder to play in. After achieving this, Mauer moves to phase 3: Bat righthanded: With the rightfielder now playing shallow, Mauer's natural opposite field stroke will send fastball after fastball into the right field corner, leaving Mauer standing on 2nd base and forcing the center fielder to play behind the right fielder in right field. After which point Mauer simply employs phase 4: Fungo bat. Mauer starts popping up infield flies directly over the pitching mound using a fungo bat. This will cause all 6 infielders to converge on the rubber and collide. With enough hangtime the fungo bat phase will create chaos sufficient to allow Mauer to run all the way to an open 3rd base. Eventually the left fielder will have to start playing shallower to guard against infield pop flies (so he can cover 3rd). Thus, both the left field line and the left center field gap will be re-opened.
  22. None of Buehrle, Radke, or Viola were drafted in the top 10. Heck, Buehrle slipped to the 38th round. They fell for a reason - the odds are stacked even more against the soft tossers. Play the odds, take the safe pick. Take the hardest throwers you can find.
  23. And that's maybe why he'll sit on the ballot a long time. Offensively he was up and down between below average and elite. He only has 4 GGs, 3 all star appearances, and zero MVPs. His career OPS+ is just 114. But he's always b een an amazing defender. As metrics improve and/or people start weighting them more heavily, I think his defensive value will push his case over the top.

  25. A fast fastball is hard to hit though. Anything 96+ you can throw straight as an arrow, in the zone, and still miss bats. To be able to throw in the zone and still miss bats - that's the holy grail. If he falls, we have to take him.
