  1. I think Hick's "reputation" was generalized from a few specific incidents. The whole switch hitting switch gets held against him, but he was under an enormous amount of pressure and was getting repeatedly thrown under the bus by his manager. That "manager" dropped the ball when he allowed a confused kid to make such a drastic change unilaterally. In my mind that was akin to a parent admitting they have no control over their kid. That shows more of a failure on the parents part than the kid. I think that Hick's cares a lot more than he shows, and people see his outward nonchalance and say he can't be coached. I agree that he has made some really poor choices on and off the field, but in my opinion there have been fewer of them than people think. We just rehash the same mistakes over and over. Just my opinion.
  2. I think you should check his splits and reevaluate your assessments.
  3. You are pointing to that split as evidence that Hicks can't hit right handed pitching? I think most people would call that a perfectly acceptable split. Joe Mauer wishes that was his split right now. Most batters have a weaker split, and those that don't have some pretty nice careers going. I for one would take Hicks hitting .250 from the right every day of the week, and twice on Sundays. Hicks has a nice little 8 game hit streak going, with most of those hits agains RHP. Call Pinto up. Hicks should stay down for a couple more weeks, to prove to himself he can sustain what he is doing. He is going to need to be confident in himself, when he comes up and faces all of the doubters who will be ready to pounce as soon as he goes 0-5.
  4. I think that Grady was a bit behind in the times and I know he wasn't able to make some fairly good teams out perform themselves. But regardless. I want Gardy to succeed. I hope he gets another chance at a major league team and manages them to a world series, unless it is against us. Gardy gave us some good years. I don't think he was what we needed, but I wish him the best, and I choose to believe he will be capable elsewhere.
  5. You are all wrong. Don't trade him! Sign him to a new 4 year contract. I bet he would sign for 6-7 mill a year. Strike while the iron is hot.
  6. I am a still a believer that Hicks is part of the future. As a starter in CF until Buxton is a permanent fixture, and then in a corner until he is supplanted. I think his floor will eventually be a solid 4th outfielder/platoon. But he should not be brought up yet. His splits are much more acceptable at this point, 1.090 from the right and .713 from the left. As a matter of fact only Robinson, .773 with only 22 AB, has a better OPS than Hicks weak side. Regardless if everyone else is underperforming, we need to leave Hicks down for at least a few more weeks. He needs to have a foundation of confidence when he comes up for the last time.
  7. In all honesty I am not sure if it was a balk or not, but I do have to say that I was very appreciative of the Umpires huddling up and discussing it. Allowing Molitor to be in on the discussion or at least present was a good move. I have become so used to seeing Umpires make a snap call and then be stubborn about it. Gotta say it was nice to see at least a token discussion. Also, I actually liked the play. I could have cost us majorly, but it didn't and it was exciting as hell. People should try that more often. At least we should, we leave men in scoring position all the time. Just my two cents.
  8. Arcia has had high strikeout numbers in the minors, but he has also had a good batting average and a good OBP. So he is more than a one tool player. With his struggles at the plate, we are also seeing a struggle in the field as many young players struggle to separate the two. He should be benched for lack of effort or showboating. But he needs to play everyday. He should also be playing RF, as it was his best position in minors. We already have DH candidates galore in the system. His value is greater as an OF. He has had high strikeout numbers though.
  9. He should be benched quietly tonight. I think this is a good chance for a teachable moment without embarrassing him in front of fans (anymore than he already was). Schafer's wasn't lazy, he is just really bad a playing defense, and come to think of it, really bad a swinging a baseball bat. Schafer had a few other poor reads off the bat, did anyone catch those? He should be benched for a few games as I want to see Robinson a bit more anyway.
  10. Excited to see how Gibson adjusts to keep K.C. off balance tonight. I have high hopes for him this year. I do want to see him miss a few more bats though. Also, super excited to see the turn around start for Alex Meyer tonight.
  11. Sorry. My bad. MiLB is slow updating the splits at times. Thought that the days game hadn't been added in yet. Agree about small sample size.
  12. No need to rush Buck. I want him to come up with some momentum. Bringing him up now would be saying that he needs to save our defense and I actually want to see Robinson play everyday for a bit. He can play defense and he hit well today. Hicks by the way is hitting 260 against right-handers and 227 against lefties. Just not driving the ball as much from the left side. If we keep running Schafer out there I will want Rosario or Hicks up instead. Hicks has a lower average, but is out OPSing Rosario. I would prefer that both of them stay down longer, and I think Robinson is our best very short term solution. Also. Waldo made a couple nice plays today in LF. Thought he moved a little less Delmonish. I even liked his play for the ball in the corner that he didn't catch. I think he will look smoother with more seasoning.
  13. Man. That was close. I almost jumped of a bridge, I though Meyer was out of time.
  14. Still to early to quit on Hicks, and his value is low. Way to early to dump Esco and Plouffe even if Sano is up. Both of those guys have good value, either as solid trade material or bench players on a winning team. I think we forget, after how poorly our bench has been put together, how important it is to have starting quality guys on the bench. Sano will need to be solid for a year before I am ok with letting Plouffe go in a trade. Esco was the number 5 OPS shortstop with min 450 PA last year. Solid defense as well. Very good asset, not to be given away. Plouffe was the number 12 OPS 3B last year, and he played adequate defense. Again, a very valuable asset. How we manage things like this in the transition to all of the young guys, will probably be a major factor in making us a complete team that can make World Series runs.
  15. I think there is a little too much loyalty placed on TR. I think he is probably an average GM for a good talented team. He never helped his team to the World Series, or more than one playoff series win. Good GMs are capable of making the moves that pay off with titles. Under TR the Twins were never really close to winning a World Series. He isn't good with rebuilds as we are seeing now. He is capable of maintaining a good teams ability to win Division titles in a what was a fairly weak division.
  16. So we keep Robinson with a BA of .100? Or Schafer with a BA of .211? Neither has taken a walk. Strikeouts abound. Hicks on his weak side has an OBP of .214. Batting right is .600 OBP. Most switch hitters have a stronger side. Hicks is already better than either guy we have up here. Better defense as well. And yes they should have had a better option, but a lot of switch hitters need to grow in their switch hitting splits. Look at Vargas last year He hit .228 with an OBP of .287. Hicks OBP was better than that on his weak side, and yet he is a failure and Vargas was a breakout success? Not saying Hicks is nearly as good as Vargas at the plate, but the vitriol against Hicks is odd. He wasn't as big a failure as some people think. Hicks should not give up switch hitting yet. Mauer is only hitting .200 against right handers this year, and I think many of us are actually thinking Mauer is already having a better year this year.
  17. Did anyone else notice on the dribbler up the middle that Dozier and Santana missed, Santana was running to cover behind but wasn't actually trying to play the ball until too late. He was expecting it to be played instead of actually covering the play.
  18. I actually thought May was great through 5 and I think once our pathetic defense let more runners on he imploded and lost confidence. He was only at like 70 pitches I believe and had been cruising. He was getting ahead and changing things up. Striking people out. I have watched every game and I think that minus the bad defense, this was our best start yet. May had lots of quick outs.
  19. And a note on this light note. Hicks has a stolen base and an assist. and oh ya that triple was against a right hander.
  20. If Pelfrey keeps putting up numbers like he has then I think "why Meyer" is a poor question. If Pelf is losing us games then Meyer can't do worse than that. I would also like to see what Allen could do with him.
  21. Chattanooga should do some sort of promotion that involves Sano hitting a passing train with a homer. Call it the Chattanooga ChooChoo. Maybe Give away Free MLB.TV subscriptions.
  22. Thanks Seth. Some nice stories in the minors to make up for a terrible day in Detroit. Was Berrios starting today just speculation or was he scratched?
  23. Anyone know why Duffey is pitching for Chattanooga? I thought Berrios was supposed to start.
  24. Not really a Bert fan but that was awesome. Especially the one back at Detroites (?) for not knowing how ugly their city is. Bremer has to keep him away from the sauce.
  25. Bert did say Sep-sedes. Hilarious.
