Article: Early 2017 Draft Prospects
ALessKosherScott replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
My gut feeling is I really like Faedo's delivery and stuff. Ditto Greene. I'd like Kendall if he could put up a junior year where he walks more than he strikes out. But right now I'd prefer Schwarz or Harrison as a college hitter. Wright seems like a safe bet. But a safe bet to be what is my question? Kyle Gibson?- 69 replies

Article: Planning To Fail
ALessKosherScott replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
When you look back on something and know how it's going to work out, it's easy to pick it apart. It's harder to do it in December 2015. Sano is no more a third baseman right now than a right fielder. So faulting them for not trading a good third baseman in Plouffe is fun. They tried the same tricks that worked for a similar defensive tooled Cuddyer ten years ago. It failed. But it was a decent enough idea to try and keep Sano from first base. Yes, the Twins were lacking right handed bats who could DH in December. It's not like you could count on Vargas to turn things around. And yes, the control-oriented Phil Hughes year last year looked a lot like the bad Radke year in 2015. At that point, a bounce back year was within the realm of possibility. You can't fault Ryan for not having a plan. The real problem is the plan hasn't adapted much over the last decade. -
Article: Planning To Fail
ALessKosherScott replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think saying there wasn't a plan isn't fair. Saying the plan didn't work, however, is. The short right-field space was suppose to hide Sano's lack of range, like it did Cuddyer's last decade. It didn't. Park was supposed to be the tailor-made right-handed DH for Target Field. He wasn't. But in his defense, he was before the wrist injury. Hughes was supposed to be the new Radke. He got hurt. May was supposed to make an impact in the bullpen. He got hurt. Buxton was supposed to be ready to hit major league pitching, so much so we could flip Hicks for catching help. Neither part of that worked. Berrios was supposed to become a ready-made ace. He hasn't shown the command for it. And so on. And so forth. Some years just aren't yours. This is one of those for the Twins. -
My two cents is they have the ultimate weapon for pitchers...81 games in a ballpark that makes right-handed pitchers really hard to take out of the park. Left-handed, homer-prone pitchers like Santiago, not-so-much. But right-handed ones, yes. Step 1 Find an army of Carlos Silvas and Nick Blackburns, Or righty sinkerball pitchers who are cheap in free agency. Step 2 Crisp up the infield defense. Step 3 Profit.
-
Gonsalves as the best pitching prospect in the system? That makes sense. Gonsalves as a extreme flyball left-handed pitcher who righties have an easier time with coming into a park that really favors right handed hitters as the best fit? That's the scarier thought.

I think the flaw with Grossman is that a fourth-outfielder/guy who sits against righties in general type of player has to be a pretty good defender to stick. And defense has never really been Grossman's thing. As long as he doesn't get too expensive or block someone better, he's a fine bench piece.

Milone never sat low-90s with his fastball as a starter. You're banking on the hope that he can bounce back some. And the reality is no one is going to pay top dollar for the rights to pay Santana $13.5 through his next two decline years.- 553 replies

I don't mind it. But it seems like we have 100 MPH relievers with command issues in spades right now. I suppose it only takes one to figure it out though.- 553 replies

Article: Brandon Kintzler: Proven Closer?
ALessKosherScott replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It's a guy who is so unhittable you'd trust him with the game on the line. Wade Davis was a proven closer even when he was an 8th inning guy. He had the stuff and the mindset. Kintzler? He's having a great year and the new-found command is helping him. But proven? Eh. If the right offer comes around, he's highly movable.- 25 replies

Article: Trade Eduardo Nunez: Would You?
ALessKosherScott replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
A: Yes. If a good offer came in. -
Ortiz was a stupid move because he'd actually was becoming a better hitter in his time with the Twins. His last year he slugged .500 over 466 PAs. The knock was could he stay healthy, and when he did he became a star. The problem with Arcia is he has spent the last three seasons regressing. It's sad, and maybe being DFA'ed sparks something in him. But you can't keep a player who refuses to evolve.

Article: The Twins' Next Hall Of Famer
ALessKosherScott replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think my point was that you were reaching to call Fernando Valenzuela the "best pitcher in baseball" in the early 80s. Statistically, Steve Carlton was the best pitcher in baseball in the early 80s. And there probably wasn't another consistent "Best Pitcher In Baseball" for multiple years until Clemens came along in '86. And IMO, there's two very clear moments for Santana which are Cy Young awards on his shelf (plus another three you could have gave him). With Mauer, it's a very clear MVP award that he deserved plus one in theory he deserved over Morneau in 2006. The Bill James HOF checklist states if you can make a clear case for any player being the best player it the game at their position over a stretch of years, odds are they're Hall of Famers.- 80 replies

Article: The Twins' Next Hall Of Famer
ALessKosherScott replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Yeah. Comping Santana, who finished with a career ERA+ of 136, to Valenzuela, who had one season in his career with an ERA+ better than 136, doesn't seem exactly right. If you had gone Hal Newhauser, maybe. But Newhauser is in the Hall of Fame. Simmons and Freehan are guys who you hear a lot of outcry should be in the Hall of Fame, and Mauer is a better hitter than both and had more of an impact with his glove than at least Simmons (who had a bad defensive reputation) and possibly Freehan. Bill Dickey is a pretty good comp for Mauer's catching career. And again, he's in the Hall of Fame. I think if we want to talk about putting Torii Hunter in the Hall of Fame, that's where I have a problem. Hanging around for 17 years to put up counting stats doesn't make you a great player. Having truly great years does. For the record, Puckett is light years above Hunter as the franchise's best center fielder.- 80 replies
