    A catcher whose caught stealing average is almost 50 percent below league average, does not get extended. He would be signed for a not extreme amount when the time comes.

    The same could be said for Lewis, Lee, Martin. If they play well, they stay, if they flounder, they sit, which is why the Twins have defense bench sitters for when the starter becomes a liability in a close game.
