  1. #1 prospect a couple of years ago!
  2. I have to admit that I was a huge skeptic of the new CBA and the impact it would have on the draft, but it has been a huge success. Players are getting signed quickly and getting pro experience, smart teams are still able to leverage their positions, and there is now more equity in overall draft outlays. To top it off there is no evidence that I have seen that MLB lost players to other sports.
  3. I always find it amusing when people get their undies in a bunch after a player mentions an advanced stat. And to top it off, it is then used as an excuse to bludgeon the Twins front office some more.
  4. I used to think this was the best way but I've changed my mind. Imagine a scenario next year (with interleague games every day) that has the overall interleague record within a game going into the last weekend and the interleague series is something like Seattle and the Cubs. Would having the winner of that series determine home field be any less of a farce than having the winner of the all star game determine it? Probably best just to go to best overall record or alternate each year.
  5. True, but the team still has to pay him, it burns up service time, and it prevents him from working on stuff at fall instructs. I would still contend if he is just going to sit on the bench they are not going to call him up. That said, if Span is traded, Revere and/or Willingham are injured, and Benson and/or Tosoni are injured/still suck there would be playing time to be had and he could get a call up then. The callup is not automatic, a lot would have to happen.
  6. I don't think your position regarding Buxton is unreasonable. The top 5 could go any way depending on preferences and what you want to emphasize.
  7. I understand the thinking but I would still say doubtful. There would have to be some injuries and trades for this to happen. They won't call up Hicks to have him sit on the bench for a month and I doubt they think he is ready. A year from right now is much more likely.
  8. I did the Pitt and Cincy trip this year and loved it as well. Houston is a very mediocre ballpark. That and Milwaukee are the examples of why it was so great that Target Field did not get a retractable roof.
  9. Reading up on Hicks got me thinking that the Twins farm system is actually in pretty solid shape when it comes to bats. Since it is the all star break thought it might be a good time to put together a top ten list and see what others think as well. Here are my top ten hitters: 1. Sano - Too much power. 2. Buxton - This is based on the likes of Law and others. Not going to worry too much about his numbers this year, going to stick with his elite tools. 3. Hicks - Is hitting well and is a plus defender at a premium position. 4. Rosario - Injury set him back, but seemed like he was holding own at 2B. 5. Arcia - Could be anywhere after Sano and I wouldn't argue. 6. Benson - Disaster of a season so far, but won't completely ignore all that happened before. 7. Goodrum - This is a personal preference. Still think he can stick at short. 8. Harrison - Bat seems legit but concerned that he is already destined for 1B. 9. Michael - I still think he is legit and will have a good second half. 10. Hermann - Catching keeps him in top 10. HM (above rookie ball): Ortiz, Santana
  10. Good to see him doing so well, very much a subtle breakout. He is added to the 40 man this summer, I imagine the plan will be to start him in the minors, but he is very much on pace to be up midseason next year. From all accounts he still is a plus defender in CF with a plus arm. I had him at #2 going into the season, and he is now no worse than 5, which isn't really a knock on him as much as it is that the Twins now have 5 legitimately good hitting prospects, 6 if you want to count Harrison and 7 if you think Benson can come back.
  11. I think this could be right, depends on what teams are ultimately offered. The AJ trade was interesting to read about after the fact. Giants had offered Nathan/Bonser but the Cubs came in with a slightly better package so the Twins came back asking for another C prospect and came up with Liriano. There is a really good story on all the behind the scenes of this trade but I can't find it right now.
  12. I still think people are underestimating his value a little bit. I wouldn't trade Hicks (but he is also a top 3-4 prospect for the Twins) but I would definitely trade Hermsen for Liriano and would add more. Twins will get some combination of: -4-5 type starter who is either in AAA or just getting started in the majors (think Phelps of Yankees) -AA pitcher that is solid but not elite and has some warts (think Hermsen) -AA guy who projects to be a big leaguer but not necessarily a star (Chris Hermann) -A high upside lottery ticket guy in A ball (Soliman or Daniel Ortiz type) I would think Liriano will get at least 2 of these. The debate teams are having is whether he is worth the risk to give up a good prospect, as in a projected regular (Hicks type).
  13. He'll get another chance in the bigs really soon.
  14. Word is he was really drunk. With that in mind, this whole sequence makes a lot of sense.
  15. Yes. And Morneau has the track record to be acceptable against lefties, nothing wrong with giving him the reps to work through it. Especially if the alternative is Valencia.
  16. No way the Twins agree with you on this (2013 being ugly). If nothing else they have to sell tickets. But I would even argue they are two solid starters and a couple of things continuing on from being a contender in the Central. That is far from impossible to fill with $30 million in payroll and Span as an asset to trade.
  17. I think Liriano and Capps get traded for sure. Liriano might even be as soon as the all star break if it is the right deal. I can't imagine the Twins will want to bring back either next season and they'll have value. If Pavano gets healthy he might be an August trade as a salary dump, similar to when the Twins got him from Cleveland I don't think anyone else gets traded this year. I thought Span was a goner, but I think they'll wait until after the season and trade him for a current starter. Twins are playing decent ball since mid-May, no reason to blow up the team for next year. As was said, it will be a matter of what Ryan does in the offseason to address the rotation that will matter the most to fans.
  18. Why stop at $20 million more? I would still argue the payroll is about where it should be relative to other teams in similar sized markets. This is especially true going into this season as they knew it would be a transition year. They spent plenty on the draft and international free agents.
  19. Hope he has a good outing against the Rangers, trade him over the all star break for the best package you can get, and never, ever look back. I would never trust him with a three year deal.
  20. Another problem with this thinking is that if Fuentes clears waivers (which I assume he already has) then he will be free to sign with any team. Do you really think he would choose a team going nowhere this season like the Twins when other teams might have interest. Building on that, the second half of this season is perfect time to find out what Robertson, Waldrop and Guerra, as well as Guiterrez, Slama, Oliveros (when they are healthy) have and if they are able to contribute next year. Fuentes would just get in the way.
  21. Everything that I have read makes it seem like Harrison will almost certainly wind up at 1B while there should still be hope, errors or not, of Sano sticking at 3B with a potential move to an OF corner. I think you can make those moves when you are forced to, not any earlier. I would think Harrison plays out the Appy schedule with a late callup to Beloit, and Sano stays at Beloit until the end. Next year they will start at different levels, and if they ever get to the same level you worry about it then. Of each progress as they should, they might not have an extended time together until the bigs.
  22. A roster spot?
  23. Makes me think they will go a bullpen game on Sunday. After the all star break they can reevaluate if Walters is ready and where/if Blackburn and Hendriks might fit back in after a couple of starts in AAA.
  24. Pretty much every team in baseball views AAA as a place for washed up vets and depth guys. This is not unique to the Twins, there are few impact prospects at the level.
  25. I would add Goodrum to that mix as well.
