  2. Bummer I was away from this thread for a couple of weeks, that religion exchange was right in my wheelhouse.
  3. I always thought a good first step for gun violence would be to make manufacturers and/or sellers financially liable for any crimes committed with the gun and have a gun insurance requirement for owners. Would take a pretty thorough registration system, but would ultimately let the market decide. Of course there is no way this would happen. Gun rights groups, while throwing the occasional bone to the masses, really pretty much represent the interests of manufacturers and sellers. Always will.
  4. Deer are tasty.
  5. For research for my fantasy league, I did a average rank of the big 4 prospect sites (Law, BP, BA, MLB) and did an average rank for each prospect*. Here are how the Twins guys came out: Buxton 2 Berrios 20 Kepler 37 Gordon 71 Jay 73 Polanco 91 Stewart 97 Dodgers were the only other team with 7, and I actually think Law's ranks check out pretty well (or at least better than Baseball America), and I would probably put the Twins ahead of the Braves, but that is a preference of top guys over post-100 depth. *It curious, methodology was Law top 110, Baseball Prospectus top 101, BA and mlb top 100. Weighted them all the same, simple summing of ranks and divide by 4. If a player was not on a list I gave him a 110 for the purpose of rank averages. If you want to know any other players rank let me know.
  6. 3 catchers is still a thing, eh?
  7. I agree with all of this. I had some thoughts last year that he might be nearing a point of getting out. This strikes me as him feeling good and mentally giving himself one last good shot.
  8. While this is true, prospect lists have gotten much, much better in the last 10, and especially 5 years. The draft too. I just don't think bringing up examples from 25 years ago is all that meaningful anymore. And with Delmon the lists did adjust somewhat in time.
  9. This wouldn't surprise me either. But, contra Berrios, they could theoretically have a plan to stretch him out as a starter from day one this year and then manage his innings late by letting him finish in the pen. He might do that in the minors anyways. It would make more sense because Jay obviously has experience as a reliever and it would be built into a plan from the beginning.
  10. He strikes me as a guy who would benefit from a roster expansion to 26 (or more). Does seem like he could carve out a role a lefty masher even if he can't work through his contact issues. That position just isn't that common in today's roster crunch.
  11. I just don't see how you can punish a team unless they knowingly sign a steroid guy and/or supply them.
  12. If the Twins are as competitive as we hope, I wouldn't be surprised if Jay gets some run in the bullpen down the stretch, starts 2017 back in the minors as a starter and comes up about halfway through the season in the rotation.
  13. You answered your own question, which is why the Twins won't sign Jackson.
  14. 90/10 Buxton breaks camp. And the 10 is for injury. If they sign Jackson that is almost certainly the end of Arcia. I don't think that's worth it at any price.
  15. I agree with this. I think they feel they have enough in the pipeline that they didn't feel the need to go multiple years on good but far from elite guys. Certainly a gamble, especially after it didn't exactly work last year. I also find it somewhat interesting that in interviews Ryan and other front office guys keep mentioning trades. I guess we'll see.
  16. Fair point and also why I don't think it is fair to necessarily kill the Twins for the deal at the time. That said, prospect rankings, while far from perfect, have also gotten much, much better in the last decade precisely because of getting burned by guys like Young. He had amazing tools and talent, but statistically there were enough red flags that would get caught now to reduce his value/rankings. And I'll stand by the point that the Rays were savvy enough to catch and know this at the time while a lagging team like the Twins got burned.
  17. I didn't say it was too much, just a decent amount for a guy with red flags. Looking again, I didn't realize Jepsen had his K/9 drop so much last year. I don't think I would want him on a multi-year deal either - which maybe made the contract he had more valuable, got him for the rest of the year and if he bounced back a little (which he did), you can keep him for another year.
  18. They were absolutely overrating Delmon's batting line, huge red flags throughout on walk rate, a ISO power that didn't really match his tools (they often talked about his loud bp), and obvious questions about his defense. I always thought this was a classic trade that was made that showed how behind the Twins were relative to the Rays on some statistical stuff that would be considered pretty basic now but were just starting to go mainstream at that time. The counter is that he had just played 162 games and held his own at 21. A higher character guy probably puts up more than one good season with that talent. I also wonder if Ryan would have ever traded a SP and SS for a corner OF. I have my doubts.
  19. Or he could be getting closer and closer to being cooked. I have no problem passing on this deal.
  20. That's a decent amount of scratch for a reliever that really wasn't that good last year and is trending the wrong direction.
  21. That was my thought too, but Segura was better, both in minors and majors aside from the brief babip infusion, and can play a better SS.
  22. He would have to be down at least until August. It isn't happening. If Buxton starts in AAA it is 100% performance.
  23. I'm going the other way for the Democrats. I think voters break late for Clinton, giving her a clear victory of 7-8 points. And I think Trump and Cruz are much closer.
  24. The first four are Iowa, NH, Sout Carolina and Nevada. Trump has big leads in the last three. I'm not convinced it will be as easy as those individuals all dropping out. If NH returns a nig Trump win with the four of them (Bush, Rubio, Christie, Kasich) all about the same, there is no incentive for them to drop out yet, continually splintering the field, giving Trump more momentum and then who knows what. That strikes me as the disaster scenario for the Republicans. I fear your guy Cruz may have peaked.
  25. The Des Moines Register poll is out, historically pretty accurate. Trump and Clinton with narrow victories, Rubio in third hovering around 15%. If Trump wins Iowa he almost certainly sweeps the first four contests.
