  1. I agree that teams should have the option to void a contract of a steroid guy. Don't agree with the additional drug testing.
  2. I think this is right, but Obama could easily shift the tight spot on to the Republicans with a reasonable nomination. A good, qualified, well-respected (in the legal community) candidate would really put pressure on the Republicans. There is a very good chance Clinton is the next President, which could be paired with a Democratic majority in the Senate. That doesn't seem like a scenario worth delying for, assuming a good candidate. My naive prediction is Obama nominates one of the obvious candidates being floated (likely Srinivasan) and there is much huffing, puffing, gnashing of teeth, and then he is approved on a pretty slim margin with no filibuster.
  3. I think this board is finally jumping the shark when it comes to Mauer.
  4. That strikes me as too long for Obama to wait. There will probably be a nominee in the next couple of weeks. The next term starts in October right? I still think it ends up as a highly competent slightly left of center nominee.
  5. I know this point gets brought up from time to time but is it actually a serious argument anymore? The US government has an amazing military. Guns in the hands of citizens have no chance. They would be liquidated by precision bombs from drones before they knew what hit them. I understand much of the reasoning but this pure fantasy.
  6. It is actually a tough Senate map for the Republicans this cycle. Lots of them defending seats in swing states. This could absolutely tip the balance against them if they block a clearly competent justice. I agree with the take that they will do the usual delaying stuff until the nominees come into more focus. Republicans would rather have Obama nominate than Clinton or Trump I would think.
  7. I don't think testing for recreational drugs is allowed for players on the 40 man.
  8. I do think it was wise to change the title of the post. I applaud that.
  9. Probably wise to take a break. But don't go. And if the shoe was on the other foot, it would be the same, this isn't just a liberal problem. Sad reality of the political culture in our country.
  10. I generally agree, but I'm doubtful he goes on the right side. He'll nominate an extremely competent slight liberal and make the Republicans twist themselves into knots trying to stop it. Or perhaps even better, support the individual.
  11. If this is true and it all hung on the balance of a 79 year old, wasn't it pretty much dead? If Republicans win the Presidential election this will barely be an historic ripple (as far as swinging the court is concerned). And really, conservatives need to do away with the notion they have some sort of monopoly on the constitution. It's true when it lines up with what they want, same as any political individual.
  12. While true that I didn't necessarily agree with much of what he did and that can be analyzed at a later time, I do always pause to acknowledge someone who honorably served the country as long as he did. I do have respect for honest idealogues. 9 kids, 30something grand kids, a full life until your late 70s, and dying in your sleep while still relatively healthy and after a night of bird hunting. Nice way to go out.
  13. Why would Obama approve of that?
  14. The OF pipeline is actually not all that robust after Walker. And Walker really doesn't have that much trade value right now if that is your concern. Might be able to get a half season of a reliever or a corner bat. Keeping him in AA for a little bit longer won't change that.
  15. I agree that one side is stopping anything meaningful. The problem might be that the side pushing for a solution is just not ambitious and/or strategic enough. The small things are easily pushed back against and can be stated to be a stalking horse for confiscation down the road (fairly or not). The current methods aren't working and continually repeating the same things in the hope that more people will finally get smart and see the light isn't going to work. (And as an aside, is probably the best explanation of why the Dems have gotten crushed in the past two midterms). I would personally push the goalposts of demands much further, co-opt the law abiding language, and then allow the actual small things wanted now to seem like a reasonable compromise. Then after a couple of years, rinse and repeat, continually chipping away.
  16. Fair point and a matter of preference. I see AA as having better stuff, less experience and command. AAA is more veteran, some mlb vets, 40 man depth and usually better pitchability. You'll also see the occasional top guy that hasn't broken through yet (think Berrios). In a sense he could learn either level, but as I said before, I just don't see the rush. He clearly has things to work on if he is ever going to be an effective big leaguer, and I guess I would advocate doing that at AA and try and master that level before moving up. Twins have the ability to be a little patient, and he is not in danger of being passed up.
  17. I don't see the rush. It is far from "past time" to move him up, he has clear holes in his game he can work on. There isn't exactly a wave of OFs pushing him.
  18. They did move him from catcher. You can't fully eliminate the risk of concussions, but you can take steps to reduce the likelihood. The issue in football is not necessarily the occasional concussion but the repeated pounding from repeated hits. That is just not an issue in baseball, if he is still able to function (albeit at a slightly diminished capacity), it is kind of up to the player at that point.
  19. I'm not being obtuse, I'm thinking about the cost (beyond just financial) and the unintended consequences that will arise. I'm not sure it is wise to have the standard that anything that can save even a few lives is worth implementing without considering everything that comes from said policy. I suppose I can live with an incremental approach, and there are certainly differences across states that result in differing outcomes. But I'm not convinced it is this clear (on these specific proposals).
  20. And I'm not even really a gun guy at all, and wouldn't shed a tear if extreme measures were taken of registration and buyback, but I'm just underwhelmed by these solutions.
  21. I'm sorry, all of those solutions you mentioned just won't do much. They would all be fine as far as I'm concerned, but I can understand why people are underwhelmed. The extreme gun violence is just such a small percent of gun violence victims. Not saying those victims don't mean anything, but there is a cost to a society with new laws - unintended consequences, increased black market, etc. Is that a good societal tradeoff? Might be, but I'm not as certain as I had been before. And while many people here don't understand the desire to own guns, many, many, many people in this country do enjoy owning them. Expecting that to shift is not especially realistic and probably pretty insultingly elitist. To me, the key to tackling gun deaths starts with domestic violence and suicides.
  22. One other thought on Walker, it would be interesting to start him at AA and see if he can improve his bb/k ratios. Twins have been pretty aggressive with him, bumping him a level each year, wonder if it might be of some benefit to give him some consolidation time. He has been inching up his bb rate the last couple of years with a corresponding larger jump in k rate. Would be interesting to see if another half year at AA would keep inching up the bb rate (maybe to 11ish%) and also drop back down the k rate (say, to 27ish% from the 34% last year). As a 24 yo in AA, a 11/27 split is not great, but you can squint and see a guy who can survive in the bigs, and hope for some improvement as he gets more pa. Maybe loading up on those minor league fa ofs wasn't the worst idea. In addition to backing up a young mlb of, it gives some more time to prospects that might need it. Will be interesting to see where AB Walker starts the season.
  23. I didn't really see a realistic solution from anyone, so there's that. People are pretty good at identifying problems. It's the second part that usually gets you. Apparently unless you're Bernie Sanders.
  24. Can't say I knew much about Gilmore, but looking at his bio, seemed maybe the most qualified candidate? Probably why he never had a chance.
  25. Indeed. If I was working to decrease guns and gun deaths I would hammer this point over and over again. This is where meaningful change happens on this issue. Not exactly holding my breath waiting on the strategic acumen of the Democratic Party.
