    If Gibson pitches well tomorrow they can maybe phantom dl him. Otherwise the starting options are a little sparse.

    I think merely counting innings is a mistake, there is also the time with coaches, executing a plan, all of that. A team will go into spring with a plan a, but it strikes me as unlikely they decided before camp that Mejia would get first crack if one of the starters went down. He earned the spot. If Berrios was there the whole time he could have done the same.

    I think the Twins are sure of Vargas and they have him in the role that allow him to provide the most value. There's no reason to jettison him unless there's a clear upgrade. Those guys mentioned are not clear upgrades. They'll get a chance at some point, but other than maybe Palka they'll have different roles, it's not a clear swap out situation.

    I'd take Vargas over Park too. Ryan likely would have rolled with Park because he had money invested. Vargas has some value, especially while making the minumum, but probably time to stop pretending he's something more than he is. Playing him more just to find this out is not all that necessary.

    I'd go the other way. To me, Vargas is an example of how fans overrate marginal big leaguers, especially if said player could fill a clear team need. If the team would have developed him differently or just left him alone gave him more time he would magically turn into something that he isn't. He's performing basically exactly how one should expect from his minor league numbers. He's a fine stop gap, part time dh/1b and bench bat, but really doesn't provide enough other value to make up for ok, but not great, batting line (especially his low obp) to ever be much more.

    Perhaps, but the command difference between this year and last year is huge. Maybe the front office was on to something.

    That was the necessary reason. Also clearly stated reasons by the front office were they wanted him to tighten command and also dominate for a stretch following his brutal debut.

    Of course they go through medicals/physicals/MRIs/etc, but they aren't black and white, especially for a pitcher.

    I'm pretty sure the Twins know what they have. An acceptable placeholder as a part time dh/1b/bench bat. Start him when they have good matchups and to give corner guys days off. Otherwise have him available as a strong bat off the bench late in games.

    I would have liked him up a little earlier, but strongly believe having him in the rotation on opening day would have set him up for failure. I'm more accepting of a conservative route over aggression here, considering his flop last year.

    Other than 4 or the last 17 games. Now that Vargas is up, Mauer will probably sit more, especially against LHs. Vargas as about a half time DH seems about right at the moment.

    Texas is much more likely to stay in the race. They're a pretty good squad.

    I think with Wright it is important to remember it's not just numbers and performance, he sits 94-96 and has 4 pitches to work with. He has to tighten his command and his secondary pitches (especially the changeup), but he absolutely still has upside.

    I think all your points answer themselves. It's not basically the same front office, Santiago and Berrios have significantly different experience which matters a ton, and Mejia got the call because he was there all spring and did what he had to do. I imagine Berrios would have had a decent shot to make the opening day rotation once May went down if he had been there all spring and took care of business. He sealed his own fate. Seems to have worked out though.

    Good things are starting to happen with pticher health and performance. System could look much better in a couple weeks.

    I'm most offended that after all that he didn't even mention the guy the Twins are going to draft.

    Santiago had little to do with Berrios, he was in his 7th year, not trying to establish himself after a terrible debut. The Twins front office rightly gave the veteran more trust in preparation.

    Small point but there's been talk of trading for Darvish. Why would Texas do that? They're good.

    And that he was terrible in the bigs the year before. It's really not unreasonable for the front office to want to get a good look at him and make sure he was in a position to succeed. They might have waited too long, but opening day was unrealistic.

    There was no reason the Twins should have forced him into the opening day rotation. Good move by the front office.

    He's clearly been off for a handful of starts, but I am impressed that he still manages to grind out innings. No start less than 6 innings yet.

    You can hear the heroin in those albums (for better and worse).

    And the way it ended up shaking out with lack of need on both ends of the start, even the Tepesch start was somewhat defensible, keeping everyone else on a regular schedule. Santana, Santiago and Hughes weren't going to skip a start for Berrios this early, and Gibson after 6 starts is a pretty quick hook.

    I counted him as one of the two. But Pressly is probably getting close. He uses Belisle because he has no other choice.
