  1. Well at least we've moved on to focusing on the real problem - Liriano and are done with this other nonsense.. Call his problem what you want, but Cooper is generally considered one of the best pitching coaches in the big leagues. He's telling Frankie the same thing we were - throw strikes and get ahead in the count. That he isn't doing that is on him.
  2. It was Willingham....we missed the boat on that one. As usual.
  3. I believe we have ignited a truly important debate here. I, for one, am on the fence on this one. Large hairy man-like chipmunks are unquestionably hard to look away from.
  4. You're in some kind of weird limbo in which I'm not sure what exactly the role of coaches are? Where is this magical threshold at which time coaches never remind any player of fundamental skill or approach? Do you truly believe that coaching is nothing but mechanical breakdowns? (Something which, as Brock points out, a player can just as easily diagnose as well) Good lord, there isn't a profession in the world in which this doesn't happen. People know that documentation can be important in their job if they work in health services, government, or education - that doesn't stop them from not doing it and needing a reminder to get back on track. Yes, Liriano is failing to do something fundamental that he should know from the time he was twelve. That doesn't mean he doesn't need to be told it again. Hell, there are people all over taht parade around as motivational speakers telling us the key to happiness is to "smile" or "think positively" or any other obnoxious token phrase. Sometimes - you need to hear what you already know and sometimes you're too much of a spaz to process it and execute it.
  5. If your assumption is that professional athletes don't sometimes need to be re-taught the little things or receive this thing called "coaching" to remind them of what to do I think we can eliminate many other things about baseball. How about no more fielding practice - if people know they have to catch it, why tell them or run through drills? They've been doing that since they were six. Ditto hitting practice. Throwing. Stretching by trainers. I can keep going if you'd like. Sometimes coaching is telling someone something they already know but chose not to do for some stupid reason of their own. In Liriano's case - because he's a bit of a spaz.
  6. Yeah, it's hilarious. But giving the middle finger to people who think discourse > insults is astonishingly stupid. His dad is right - it is much more effective to discuss things like you aren't a thirteen year old. Many of us who watch South Park, laugh at stupid humor, appreciate follow language, make fun of Chuck Norris for his hypocrisy, and all of that still have the maturity to see that his response was not productive. His pre-message misses the point some were trying to make to him. Sometimes it's glorious to be a dick (we built BYTO on that concept) - but don't pretend you're doing anything more than that.
  7. Cockmonsters and the rest of his verbage is not the means to change minds. In fact, I'd argue this sort of thing is highly counter productive compared to letting someone's attempt to squelch free speech stand for the offensiveness that it is. Now that is lost in the shuffle of this gag, hilarious as it may be.
  8. Second half looked a lot better - on both sides of the ball. It was nice to see them involve Rudolph a lot in the offense.
  9. [insanity] Yeah but he's an ACE!!!!! Lock him up for 3/30!!!! [/ insanity]
  10. Dave's response is indicative of why it's worth pointing out.
  11. Offense isn't exactly impressing.
  12. It already got 1.2 million reads on Deadspin within the first 20 hours and MSNBC interviewed him last night as well. I'm pretty sure this is the largest story deadspin has had since the Favre Scandal. Kluwe is awesome, after his career I hope he writes somewhere. His live chat on deadspin a month or two ago was golden. The people entertained by this don't need convincing. This won't be effective because no one on the other side of the aisle is going to take is seriously or be persuaded by it. The effort was fantastic for what it was, but it's not going to accomplish a damn thing.
  13. Good thing we started a new thread!
  14. It's also impossible to get strikeouts without throwing the ball in the zone (the preferred place for hitters to see a pitch to make contact) - you are really making this ridiculously difficult for no reason. You're right that the Twins target guys that are contact heavy, but that doesn't mean the philosophy is wrong. Pitchers have a fear of batters making contact (a legitimate fear obviously) but when you let that drive your approach to the point that you don't trust your ability to throw strikes without getting pounded - you won't be effective. Read what Chris Carpenter said. All the Twins are doing is trying to take the mystique away from contact happening so they don't have pitchers so debilitated with fear about it that they are constantly walking guys. This is, and was, Liriano's problem. It isn't shocking that the next pitching coach said the same damn thing.
  15. Probably not effective, but damn sure entertaining.
  16. You are letting the slogan drive your argument rather than the principle of it Willihammer. "Pitch to contact" is nothing more than the team's way of telling pitchers that they shouldn't be afraid of batter contact if the reverse means falling behind. Better to get ahead and get hit earlier in the count than get behind in the count. You see exactly that in Cooper's response too - he doesn't like that Liriano is trying so hard to be cute and avoid contact that he is pitching constantly from behind. No ace pitches like that and its one of many reasons why Liriano is not an ace.
  17. And yet, so many that reach the major leagues can't do it. You're confusing the Twins inability to develop pitchers that can finish off hitters with their pitching philosophy. Nothing wrong with risking contact in the name of getting ahead of hitters. The issue this team has is not having the talent to take advantage. Liriano had the talent to take advantage, but apparently his minor league instructors ubiquitous enough.
  18. This just stinks of another player getting Slowey'd. I guess well have a new description for it that rolls off the tongue a bit better.
  19. A team that has carried 13 pitchers for significant stretches of the season can sure as hell find some innings. Hell, you could lighten the load on Perkins and Burton down the stretch to help their arms. Besides.....what else is he doing for the next month exactly?
  20. Clearly it means going back and forth to AAA next season with stops at the big leagues when he's on his best roll only to sit on the bench for weeks on end and then a callup two weeks too late with another case of DL mismanagement. I mean,****, guy only had to OPS well over 1.000 to get a look again. I'm sure the rope he's given will be plenty short.
  21. Damn right it is. People in this town, on every local web page, on every local radio station were blasting the Twins for this. And with a complete misrepresentation of what was happening. The Liriano defenders have always made the Twins out to be the villans in his incompetence but he's always been his own worst enemy. And now a pitching guru that many of these same voices adore is doing the same damn thing the Twins did. "Pitch to contact" just means "throw strikes early in the count" or "don't get behind". Just because the Twins have had a string of players unable to capitalize on that philosophy with strikeouts doesn't mean it isn't the right approach.
  22. I think the Twins and a few key "leaders" on the team being publically frontal about player "toughness" has been a major component of this problem that has often been overlooked. Hard to establish good, honest communication when you call people out to the press for being soft.
  23. So Slama isn't up because he's "just" putting up a great statline? And here I thought performance on the field was important..... This is just really flimsy reasoning. Pretty frustrating to hear that this is the best the Twins can do explaining this non-move. We've had an array of horse-crap arms filling our 11th-13th spots on this roster for most of the year. We can't take a look at this 28 year old in the last month? That just stinks of stubborn stupidity.
  24. Yeah, choices like the ones we have in a few months really disillusion me from the entire process.
  25. Yeah had to post this after my defense of "pitch to contact" goes back two years. The fact is you cant strike batters out if batters doubt your ability to throw strikes.
