  1. I dont know about calling for heads but it damn sure calls for a good goddamn explanation. This excuse making BS just doesnt cut it.
  2. So not adding talent and being content with that.....somehow changes that trend? Please explain.
  3. Like I said, at the very least it gives us that. Potentially adding him gives us more upside than that. I would've taken Baker over Pelfrey. How about Haren on a one year shot? Brandon McCarthy over Correia? How about a year or two for Drew? Dave, there were plenty of ways to eat up some of that cash that will now be pocketed that would add talent to this team without crippling the future.
  4. Not sure anyone is suggesting that. But I'd love Marcum for at least the chance that he'd have a great season and be traded at the deadline for more future ammo. It beats the inevitable "Getting Willingham back from an injury is just like making a trade!" that we'll be doing on Aug. 1. In all seriousness, even if you can't improve to a playoff level, putting that 30M into talent gives the team many, many more options both in the immediate future and the near future. And given what will be done with the money otherwise, I don't think that's much to ask.
  5. What, exactly, should give us hope? Ryan is going to suddenly change his tune? Hell, people thought that about THIS offseason. It's part of the fuel for everyone's annoyance - they wanted to believe this would be different. But it's the same Ryan we've known for many years. You're welcome to be hopeful about it. But to quote someone else - we have 10 years of the exact opposite, making that hope completely and utterly baseless.
  6. So let me get this straight: Correia gets a pass for not being very good because he was flip-flopped to the bullpen from the same organization that made Kevin Slowey out to be evil incarnate for not liking the very same thing? Huh.
  7. Right, in the draft. Not free agency. At some point this team and this front office needs to realize 3 year deals for pitchers are a clear case of "get what you paid for" if that's all you'll do. I think more people are becoming aware that Ryan hasn't changed that tune from the old days of being an actual small market team. I'm not saying there is nothing prudent about that, but it certainly limits your abilities to improve your club.
  8. Brock, I get where you're caught up on best-case scenario, that was probably not the right phrasing. In any case, given the direction this team is heading it is perfectly reasonable to think we have a few more years of losing. Unless you're working under a different time-table of prospect development than me, 2015 is likely to be rookie seasons for many of our key young prospects. Given that 3 years from now is hard to predict about a catcher and a dizzy first-baseman, I just see the next few years as very much 1999-2001 with 2001 being 2016 in this case. Maybe that time-table gets bumped sooner, but I think that's a lot of unhatched chicken counting personally.
  9. Never said you did. I wasn't talking about you when I said it, which was pretty clear. I'm not mocking anyone's optimism for a few years from now. I'm mocking the use of "baseless" to over-the-top belittle a point of view.
  10. If Brady isn't fined for that slide....I think it's the straw that breaks the camel's back for me. The offense/defense hypocrisy has to decrease.
  11. When has Ryan ever shown a penchant for making big trades like that for established, veteran players? Again, that's part of the issue here. We've had a long track record for Ryan and it shows him as being supremely gun shy and reliant upon strong organizational development. I'm skeptical about this break in character just like others that have been suggested in this thread. Which is why I'm skeptical about payroll going forward.
  12. C'mon. If you want to interpret things that way then you might as well cite MVP Butera blowing A.J. out of the water too by 2015. Your point continues to be that the Twins in 2015 have a much better core to build around and my point is that core is unlikely to so overly outproduce 2001 that the comparison is pretty meaningful. The problem with your argument is that you believe two guys can carry an offense. At this point we have blackholes all over this club that aren't getting filled anytime soon. There is no one on the horizon that is even going to give this team Guzman until probably late 2014. Which means 2015 is a far more reasonable target as those guys are rookies. So 2015 breaking through as a near 90 win team with a bunch of rookies feels pretty best-case to me. People are counting far, far too many chickens before they've hatched. Most of the group we expect to be helping us long term won't even arrive until 2014 at best. Expecting us to have a fairly deep club (like 2001) composed of rookies in 2015 that pushes for the playoffs is a scenario I like to believe can happen, but feels pretty damn rosey to me.
  13. I'm optimistic about that, no doubt. My point is that it isn't so lopsided as Brock was making it out. Bear in mind that the production we got from Koskie/Hunter also came with excellent defense at valuable positions. Morneau is a 1B and Mauer is a part-time catcher now, so to me it's close. I may lean Morneau/Mauer, but I think it's closer than people remember. I don't disagree at all. Part of why I'm skeptical about 2016 being a certainty to be above 60-70M is precisely that. They MAY be pretty good with a very cheap lot of players contributing. The question is, does the roster get added to from outside (to a considerable tune to even reach 60M IMO) via FA or trade. And I hardly think it's a given that we will. Ryan seems to like to play more on the periphery of both of these and is unwilling to invest large chunks of money in a few players in favor of spreading it out to more reliable options. To me, if things go as we think they will leading to 2015 and 2016, means a VERY low payroll compared to what they should financially be able to afford. That is, unless Ryan changes his mindset significantly from what all evidence thus far has pointed to. Not impossible, but hardly certain. It would be nice to feel like if there is a bunch of good, young, cheap talent that they might take some of that massive revenue pile they are getting from TF and make their product even better. I just can't at this point.
  14. Cute, I don't deny this group is a minority, but it's a vocal one. And it's one of the most obnoxious things about sports - that fan that believes that if you're down 19-1 with two outs in the ninth and you aren't doing the "we're still going to win this one!" dance you somehow are disqualified from fandom. Sometimes being a fan means being passionate about your disappointment too. I'm excited about the team's future, but I'm very skeptical about their willingness to go outside the organization for meaningful help.
  15. Hard not to still see this guy as complicit to some degree. He clearly lied and embellished quite a bit to aid the story if nothing else.
  16. Brock, let's at least be fair. Koskie and Hunter were arguably more productive than we can expect Mauer and Morneau to be next year. It's certainly more than just Lawton. Joe Mays and Brad Radke are likely better than anything the Twins can expect to have until 2015. I understand what you're suggesting, but the point was that if Pseudo's argument was to be taken seriously he'd have to suggest that 2016 would be a different situation than our current one. (i.e. payroll not being reduced because of consecutive losing seasons) I think it's hardly unrealistic to think the Twins may be heading down a path of a series of losing seasons prior to 2016. So the suggestion that by then the payroll should be ticking up doesn't hold water to me. At least not with such a degree of certainty. There is a good chance most of this current roster is either gone or still earning low arby checks by that time. Until I see payroll heading a different direction, it's hard not to see what Ryan has done throughout his career and cringe at the idea of anyone claiming with certainty that the payroll will be above 60M. Even if 2015 is a jump upwards (which is a stretch considering it's like to be many of these key player's first or second seasons) it's not going to be dramatic enough to think payroll is going to do any major jumping. I'm hopeful it will be, but sure as hell skeptical.
  17. Sorry goofed my years. I meant 2001 in terms of record.
  18. There isnt much else to talk about. If you care to post something else fine but this is crap. A poster made an overzealous putdown about negativity which is getting really tired. I wont pretend to know what 2016 will bring but I know skepticism about this team's aggresiveness is warranted. I'm annoyed by this mentality that anything but sheepish loyalty is a bane on the board.
  19. So after probably 4 losing seasons....it'll be better? At best we can hope 2015 looks like 2000, but it's still not likely to be a wild success. And, mind you, that by 2016 the only contract that will be on our docket is Mauer. So to get to 60M will require buying two of Doumit/Willingham/Carrol/Marquis to fit the other 30 or so million available. I'm having trouble believing that is so certain to happen that calling skepticism about it "baseless" is valid. Given how much the payroll has dropped the last two years and not been replaced, it is perfectly reasonable to be a skeptic about how the payroll being dropped from Morneau and others in the future will be filled. You're basing it on hope and reasonable expectations. That's fine, I'm not criticizing your perspective. What I'm criticizing is you labeling skepticism "baseless". The skepticism is based on trends under this administration. It's hardly "baseless" - a claim you twice made.
  20. Yeah, I'm being a jerk after this person has insisted on weeks of ridiculous comments. If your response to "how is the 2016 payroll going to be filled out" perhaps we should add 20M for Drew Butera's impending MVP season? Or at what point is something so ridiculous that you should leave it off your list?
  21. Yes, and we should all be ashamed for associating with this thread as a result. This was posted in reference to the 2016 payroll: Yeah....that happened.
  22. You must have missed old nurse suggesting that 2016 payroll could be higher if Blackburn was signed to an extension. Yeah...that happened.
  23. Cute way of pickign out the one part of a reply that you could save face on and ignore the bulk of the post....doing so with an accusation of a strawman? That is some truly ironic stuff right there. What you said is that anyone being skeptical about future payroll dollars being as high as we might expect is that they are being "baselessly negative". Again, to try and diminish a point of view with some pretty smug BS. This offseason and the spending patterns give PLENTY of valid reasons for skepticism about future payroll. Until we're shown a tendency differently, it's perfectly reasonable. It's all speculation, but it's not "baseless". That would be a far more appropriate way to describe your response.
