  1. Ive offered that in this thread!!!!! I acknowledge the value of what the Twins are teaching and I acknowledge not all things are their fault. But their approach with aggressive young hitters is a problem IMO. If you are trying to box me in eternal pessimism I invite you to the Parmalee thread among many others. I wouldn't count you in the "pro human sacrifice as long as it is Twins endorsed camp" but there re others in this thread I would, so no reason for you to be defensive. You have the capacity to have open minded analysis. (Benson comes to mind)
  2. Young hitters. When Plouffe sustains that let me know. Willingham is an old dog. My issue is with those players in their first few big league years.
  3. And at some level what the Twins are teaching will help make guys better hitters. It's the rigidity about it that I think is troubling. There is part of me that wonders if guys like Vlad Guerrero had gone through the Twins if they had even had a career. Maybe the issue isn't what they are trying to instruct, but rather what they so compulsively try to deconstruct to fit their image.
  4. Agreed, but I think average was beyond what most of us felt like he was capable of coming into the season. At times (flashes obviously) I've been downright impressed. (That near homerun rob he pulled the other day. He seems to move really well to his right too) I just think some people are still slotting him like Seth did in the Kubel range and he is better than that.
  5. Exactly. Some of the responses here are from posters that I honestly think (and I'm using way over the top hyperbole in an attempt to be both amusing and illustrative. Warning!) if Terry Ryan dragged a screaming child into the middle of CF for a 7th inning stretch human sacrifice....they'd be here in minutes to say "Well.....maybe the kid had it coming" I'm not saying the Twins are 100% culpable, but Gomez clearly feels like it was better for him to get away from their coaching. We hear it every time someone with speed gets to the big leagues - stop hitting it hard and start hitting it on the ground. They did it with Revere too. (Who, by the way, is a very good line drive hitter when he's using that approach) One can be fast and still hit the ball on the screws, but the Twins rhetoric on this has long been to deny that or teach young players the opposite. I know they are trying to make the hitter more complete, but you don't want to take away all of their positives in their approach just to fit a mantra.
  6. i agree about what to do with him, but I think comping his D to Kubel is way underselling him.
  7. Well yeah but you brought up Hardy not anyone else. THe point is that the Twins stunted his growth as a hitter. THat he didn't turn it around immediately only indicates that coaching lingered. So if you want to argue Milwaukee made similar mistakes....fine but that doesn't take the Twins off the hook. Again it'sz about the poor message they are sending.
  8. Just to throw this out there, because I don't think you intended to dog his defense, but I've been more than a bit surprised by how good he's been in the OF. He has to hit a whole heckuva lot better to warrant a corner OF spot, but overall I don't think he needs his bat to counter any negative defensive value. It just needs to be better because of where he plays.
  9. Sometimes it's about how it's communicated, not what. The Twins publicly talk about "hit it on the ground" all the time - if aggression is part of your game, that would have to screw with your mental approach at the plate. The problem with what the Twins are communicating to some players is that it sounds like they don't want them to turn on pitches and pound them. Ortiz and Gomez both clearly took that away from their coaching. That's a problem.
  10. Oof, those comments are very thinly veiled. Hard not to see how that approach is really suffocating for many hitters too.
  11. Did anyone see ? I'm always amazed at how baseball can defy physics.
  12. What amazes me about Parmalee is that the deal is that he can't hit fastballs, but isn't that what he saw mostly at AAA? We generally hear it's the MLB-caliber breaking stuff they aren't exposed to in the minors, but is it fastballs too? It's hard to explain just how much he pounded AAA if he's got an issue hitting fastballs.
  13. I don't understand the surprise about Plouffe. He's never been a particularly good hitter in the minors, not bad, but nothing special. It's a bit out of the norm to expect a guy to trend to be a significantly better player against superior competition.
  14. Given our offensive and defensive numbers, our current record is far more accurate for our play. And while your sentiment of "it has to get better" can be appreciated, we heard that all offseason too. Yet, here we are two months in and still saying it. Call me skeptical.
  15. We share that expectation but personally I don't think we have to wait to start that process. To be clear, I'm not "holding it against" Ryan, just stating facts. He may well break his pattern of behavior but I expected some signs of tht this last offseason, and it didnt happen. So I'm wary about the future.
  16. you clearly don't. I do not deny that he might do what you suggest, but he ramped his rhetoric this offseason and what do we have to show for it? What you don't get is that I don't deny Ryan MIGHT do these things, but what is irrefutable is that he has not during any trench of tenure, done so to date. And please, you are conflating points. Jorgensen is arguing against using FA at all at this point and you are mixing replies to that in accurately with other conversations. The Giants example was a clear response to Jorgensen that you are twisting into a point no one is making.
  17. yes, but in the context of talking Detroit. A quick survey of the roster would have illustrated this for you. The rest of your post is fine but it ignores Sanchez, Cabrera, Hunter, Peralta, Fielder, V-Mart and others that Ryan's tendencies indicate he may not have pursued. Detroit's market is not so different from ours...their success speaks to how a willingness to use all resources can transform a team. I worry we lack a willingness to use many of the same avenues that have been CRITiCAL for where they are now.
  18. He's uncomfortable dealing prospects for established talent - yes. Which is how the Tigers got Scherzer, Miggy, Sanchez, etc.
  19. I think it's odd how much of a pass guys like Worley get for injuries and yet Benson, with some serious injuries, doesn't get any kind of pass at all. He may never recover from those, but part of his struggles the last few years could certainly be injury related. I just don't get why, in the position this club is currently in, why you risk dropping him in place of some other talent that would've clearly passed through. (Looking at you Butera)
  20. The Tigers have acquired so much key talent through trades and free agency it's insane. It makes it even more depressing that those two avenues are the ones Ryan is least comfortable with.
  21. My wife isn't as into it as I am, but I plan on getting netflix over the summer and marathoning it. Glad to hear it's holding up after all these years away.
  22. When Gomez is locked in, he has such a pretty power swing. It's just ruthless.
  23. Liriano got semi-rocked. And yeah, watching Doumit play in the OF is borderline enough for me to switch fan allegiance. Good god, please stop playing him out there.
  24. Is this trolling? Again, the idea is not to shut off options. The Giants made some poor big investments, but they were still willing to make big investments. They were also willing to deal top prospects for big additions. Both of which I'd like this club be WILLING to do. I wouldn't close off those options. Have I restated this in enough ways that you won't miss the point this time?
