  1. The point is that none of those unexpected best pitchers were the best pitchers on their team. JB's point was that the playoffs are not about "anything can happen" and that just isn't true. Aces choke every year. Former Japan-guys like Vogelsong and Lewis go ace-mode. While it's true that good pitching is necessary, it comes in all sorts of forms and rarely predictable. The playoffs truly become an "anything can happen" situation.
  2. While I agree with most everything you say, I think that last line is where my feathers get ruffled a bit. Aces haven't shown to be that kind of force anymore with the way teams insist on resting them. If they were, Detroit would have a WS title to their credit by now. One thing that has won out lately is quality depth in a rotation. So I'd have to challenge the notion that investing in a true number 1 is worth it when it might force you to have weaker mid-rotation pitching. Maybe instead the real goal is to try and get good 2s?
  3. "Increasing versatility" is pretty much one step short of saying "probably not a full-time starter" as you get.
  4. This is a far better interpretation of what I was saying, thank you.
  5. Did you miss the part where I said "While that's true"? Yes, you need good pitching. The point is that if you think you add Cliff Lee you get an ace might be true sometimes (2009 Phils) and sometimes you might not. (Philly 2011 or Texas in the WS 2010) The point is that while you need good pitching, the odds of who is going to give you that good pitching is a crap shoot. Which is precisely "anything can happen".
  6. While that's true, here is some information that might rattle that cage a little bit: Last 5 World Series teams: 2013 Boston: Best Pitcher: Lester (Expected) St. Louis: Wacha (Unexpected) 2012 Detroit: Anibal Sanchez (Unexpected) San Fran: Vogelsong (Unexpected) 2011 Texas: Colby Lewis (Unexpected) St. Louis: Carpenter (Expected, but of a bad bunch) 2010 Texas: Colby Lewis (Unexpected) San Fran: Cain (Expected) 2009 NYY: Sabathia (Expected) Philly: Lee (Expected) What you see when you look back is how many completely out of left-field performances teams that win World Series get from guys you wouldn't expect. You're no more likely to have your ace pitch like an ace than you are to have your former NPB guys like Lewis and Vogelsong.
  7. I never find public comments about a young player's game to be a good idea. Perkins should've stopped here: Everything beyond that was completely unnecessary.
  8. Were you in the 20 items or less line on top of that? I'm a strong believer we need to sanction violence against such people.
  9. There may be no more overblown sports meme in Minnesota than "you have to have an ace to win a WS" What you need is a minimum of bad players and a lot of playoff luck.
  10. My understanding is that given his age and relative health, he's already told the producers the end-game of the series. So any omissions/extras might point to what is ultimately important.
  11. A whole list of stunning facts: http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/mlb-big-league-stew/19-incredible-stats-about-tony-gwynn-s-hall-of-fame-career-182243389.html
  12. It's fine, but the distinctions were being made pretty clearly. I have a very different opinion of the deal as a whole but Worleys part is written and it isn't in the "win" column for our club.
  13. Sounds like there is an excellent chance the show reveals the conclusion before the books do. Especially since, by most accounts, Martins work in this series tails dramatically in quality after Storm of Swords.
  14. Worley and May are different people. I am evaluating their contribution to the club separately because they are separate people. Worley was an utter failure, there is really no debate to be had there. I'm shocked you want to continue to maintain otherwise. No one is evaluating the deal as a whole, just the portion Worley contributed.
  15. Definitely one of my all-time non-Twins favorites. Class act and fun to watch.
  16. Yup, Cain has been better than Myers. Davis and Shields have been vastly better than anything Tampa is playing from them. A lot still to be decided with this trade, but it is evidence that this was the horrific laughing-stock of a deal that has been perpetuated here.
  17. It should also be noted that no one they gave up in the trade is outperforming their current starters. Whereas you could argue Shields and Wade Davis have been very good this year.
  18. You then went on to change your point. The notion that all the Twins woes fall on Smith is preposterous. Ryan had a healthy share of mistakes, whiffed drafts, etc. that lead to a collapse in available talent. Your point was never to compare them against other teams, you said their own good assessments are "far, far" more prevalent than their poor ones. Which is also utter rubbish. In order to achieve 300 losses in three years it would take bad luck unseen since the Donner Party to achieve that kind of futility while operating brilliantly as an organization. Cmon. How are you not doing precisely the opposite and how is that any better? There is no more story to write about Worley. He was acquired and made the opening day starter. He failed miserably and was released for nothing. IT was a failure. There really can't be any debate about that. The Revere trade may still be great for the Twins but even if it wasn't I stand by the move at the time. It's possible to support the move and still criticize the results. So far the results are an absolute failure and some encouragement we hope to see soon, but May's success won't change the story on Worley. So yes, it is 100% unassailable that Worley was a failure for the Twins. The very fact you're taking issue with that should be something you reflect on.
  19. I hope he isn't Missing in M.I.A.......
  20. And I thought it was by far the most packed and riveting season yet. To each their own.
  21. Video game controllers really aren't much pressure on the wrists. Using a desktop computer/keyboard is far more stressful. I wouldn't see a connection there.
  22. And yet you fully admit this team can't get sell-high, buy-low right. There have been a good share of positive assessments. There are also a very healthy share of poor ones. The very notion that this team could lose almost 300 games in 3 years and are doing things the right way the vast majority of the time strains my ability to take such a point seriously. So that makes them human like every other club? Worley was a mistake. They happen. To everyone. If we can't acknowledge that you're being every bit as bad as the people who hop in the Morales thread to troll what a mistake that was. It comes off as an agenda to defend the indefensible just as some attack the unassailable. Both sides of that factor into inane debates.
  23. Part of player acquisition is to get an idea of their personality make-up. One could argue the Twins disproportionately emphasize that area as well. It's hard to put the Worley acquisition as anything but a total failure. The overall deal might be salvaged, but this part of the trade was a complete blunder on the part of Ryan and company. And that's ok. It happens. When you almost lose 100 games three straight years...I don't think there are "far more" correct assessments going on. If that were the case I'm mystified how they turned that into cellar-dwelling for three years.
  24. I had been all over Arcia for his defense pre-season and then complimented him the other day. So I think I'm to blame for this one today.
  25. Didn't Chris Sale debut two months after he was drafted?
