  1. Well that's a poor way to judge things. He was dealt from LAA because they already have a pretty nice CF you may have heard of. He didn't work well in St. Louis but his defense is exceptional and both of his complete years in LAA were fine offensively. It's price dependent, but he'd fit a variety of needs for the club. (Buy low, defensive CF, cheap, good speed)
  2. I'm not going to hold off on improving CF to wait on Buxton. If Boujos can rebound from his buy low point now, then you have a good problem to have when Buxton is ready. Bourjos alone would make me pretty optimistic going into next year.
  3. Also, count me as thrilled if the Twins pursued Bourjos. He could almost immediately improve our OF defense in leaps and bounds.
  4. I think there is a very good chance Ricky Nolasco is no longer a Twin by next year.
  5. I'd put it between 75-80. My initial gut reaction was 78.
  6. Yup, I'd have him on my list for sure. Cingarni, Straily, and Morrow might be on my list too depending on cost.
  7. I love the idea of shopping Plouffe, I just have doubts about receiving fair value in return.
  8. Well now that you've jinxed it....
  9. The problem is that the Twins have had opportunities (2011 comes to mind) to answer the concerns themselves. The reality is that regardless of all the conditions and adjustments you want to play devils advocate with, the Twins have never soundly declared through their actions that they have pushed payroll at or above that number. They have stayed disproportionality lower in payroll even as their revenues have increased substantially.
  10. Basically you're justifying teams cooking their books to keep promises. I think reasonable estimations can be made and those reasonable estimations don't match the promises. They don't always have to for me, but consistently NOT making that level is a problem in my eyes. It's even worse when one playoff game has been played and you're already trying to sell the public on a payroll decrease.
  11. Yeah, I think that's the problem - none of us believe we'll ever exceed that number to make the average work out.
  12. I thought the move to 1B was a bit premature and was hoping we could ride it out a bit longer from a value standpoint, but I didn't see the move as coddling. More protecting a high value asset. I do, however, hope the new manager makes Joe a bit uncomfortable. In a good way.
  13. Clear cut first ballot HOFer. Not the best all-time SS, however.
  14. Aggressive looks different to different people, but I think where it can be recognized equally is in the mentality behind the moves. I don't need "aggressive" to be Lester or Scherzer, but I do need it to be a clear offseason initiative to come in with a stronger 25 man roster. The tenor of St. Peter's remarks leads me to believe they already plan to scale back. That I can't stand.
  15. I think this is why some of us embrace aggressive moves like the Shields trade - I'm so sick of seeing this club shutter the windows when the going gets tough rather than pushing the envelope. They have plenty of cash and no deals that are breaking their backs for a decade - god it'd be nice if they pounced on the opportunity to add serious talent to a team that might be close.
  16. It was definitely one of those moments when a manager's stupidity single-handedly sinks his team.
  17. The problem with Myers as I see it is that his bat plays well in CF...but he stinks at it defensively. He's fine in the corners, but his bat is far from elite. So he doesn't fit well anywhere without taking a serious knock in value.
  18. I think that was my big beef - the Royals could very well slide back to obscurity. They might also take the revenues from sold out Kaufmann the last month and bring Shields back. I think the intention was pretty clear - the time to wait was over, it was time to be relevant again. Their game tonight proves that a success no matter the outcome.
  19. Which is encouraging for next year as well. It means that this team actually played a bit better than we might think it did. If you believe in run differential as telling (I do), then the Twins might be able to plan on 3-5 wins more next year just on having better luck. 74ish wins is within striking distance of a jump to competitive play with an aggressive offseason as drjim pointed out earlier.
  20. You're minimizing the success of their season this year on the assumption of what is to come. The mission they accomplished was what I posted above - relevancy and still having a decent supply of assets on the team. Trying to knock that accomplishment down based on the assumption of future failure seems like sour grapes and I don't get why. The Royals can have had a successful season and it says nothing good or bad about the Twins. My point is that if we judged any of the division winning Twins teams of the last decade in the same manner we'd probably call all of them non-successes. I totally disagree with that. The Twins got swept, A LOT, but it's still an accomplishment to be one of the few standing when the dust settles with a shot at a championship. Every time the Twins accomplished that the last decade is a success in my book. I wouldn't judge the Royals more harshly than that and I think most of what we're hearing in this thread is pretty unfair.
  21. Pick any single season from the 2000s. 2008? Apparently a non-success. 2010? Didn't win a game after in the postseason. I don't see the point in arguing that the Royals future is doomed past this one game. That's way too bold a claim for anyone to make with any solid footing. You can believe that to be true, but they could very well continue to compete. It's far from a given that a run this year with no title means the end of their relevancy and it seems that you and others are making that rather large assumption a bit too confidently.
  22. You're talking about losing one game and being out versus losing three games and being out. Given how the 2000s Twins played in the playoffs, the difference is moot. For example, I wouldn't call the 2008 Twins and unsuccessful team. They had a successful season, they just got beat in a dramatic game. Baseball is unique because of the lack of teams that make the playoffs (roughly half of what makes it in the NBA and NHL) and the grinding, grueling schedule. Any time you survive 162 games - be it because of weak division opposition or not - and have a chance to win a pennant - then you've had a successful season. Whether your first series is best of one or best of three seems like an odd line to draw between success and non-success.
  23. Relevancy, a very successful season, and all the assets they got in the Grienke deal plus whatever compensation they get if they release Shields. My god, if people applied the same rigors of "success" to the Twins of the 2000s there would be riots on the forums. But I guess playing 165 games before going home empty handed is WAY better than 163 games.
  24. You're one of the first posters to come rushing in when Thrylos or someone else bashes the 2000s Twins for not winning anything and being unsuccessful. And you're right. Making the playoffs in baseball, over a grinding 162 season, is an accomplishment. The playoffs are a crapshoot and I'd never call making them a non-successful season. Especially when you haven't made them in three decades. I'm not sure why you feel the need to keep implying that's a bad thing. Good for the Royals, even if you want to rain on their parade for whatever reason that may be.
