  1. Maybe, but look how long it took to stretch May into that. Right or wrong, if that's the process for this team Berrios isn't stepping into high leverage situations for awhile.
  2. Those are best left for the political threads where us weirdos lurk uninterrupted by the masses.
  3. If it's so easy, the constant contradictions and hypocrisy would be a lot less rampant.
  4. If all he's tossing are low leverage innings where screwing up isn't a big deal - then what the hell are people talking about? I have a hard time reading most of these posts as saying they want him in the Graham or Pressley role. People are talking about replacing Fien. Now, your suggestion is exactly the role I'd have liked to see him in to get acclimated to the big leagues. I think that's a reasonable take that is thoughtful about how young kids adjust. But most people whining about this are expecting to slot him as the 7th inning guy right now. So I'm not sure your point really makes much of a difference to what I said. Though I agree with it completely.
  5. Ryan had a chance to be aggressive with a similar talent...did we all forget about Miggy? And let's cut the nonsense about what specifically is or isn't in the control of the GM. For better or worse they get all the credit and blame for things that happen under their watch. Splitting hairs about that is beyond obnoxious.
  6. Ryan has made changes, but the point is that Smith aggressively pursued Sano over and above what he was allotted. What evidence is there that Ryan has done such a thing? You can be aggressive within a budget, but that was never Ryan's MO. It was nickel and diming in FA. It was under-slot drafting. It was under the radar IFA. You can stick your head in the sand and pretend until the cows come home, but there is PLENTY of "basis to doubt". You not acknowledging it doesn't make it go away.
  7. I think given his track record of taking time to adjust to each level, we should have very tempered expectations whenever the call comes. The best reason to have him up is to give him time to adjust so next year is better. The consequence of that is to expect him to struggle which could hurt the team. I know this is a hard concept for some of you, but sometimes young talent is too much of a wildcard to risk if you are only focused on immediate contributions. I don't think that's why the Twins waited, but to destroy them about "best players" totally overlooks how likely it is that he'd struggle initially. The best benefit to his call up isn't likely to be his performance, but more that we get his initiation out of the way.
  8. I tend to think this discussion has veered away from reality pretty sharply. Many are over-estimating how much Berrios would help (in all likelihood) and others are completely ignoring how he might help. I think he should be up, but I do think his potential impact is being a bit overblown. Most young guys need time to adjust and clearly he's had that pattern as he has advanced.
  9. People can live in denial about it, but there is no question in my mind that Sano would be marveling some other bunch of fans if Ryan was in charge back then. Every time he crushes the ball I thank Bill Smith again.
  10. Yeah, this doesn't make sense.
  11. If the reason not to trade Plouffe is because you have three unproven options, that's bad reasoning. That's the point. At some point in building a club you have to trust your unproven options to step up to the opportunity. You can't wait around for injuries to present those opportunities, sometimes you have to put them out there.
  12. It's also a bit odd to say the Pirates "want" him there when he only made the team after a series of injuries to their infield.
  13. If people are worried about Kepler/Arcia/Vargas or other young players next year than Plouffe is even more irrelevant to 2016. At some point you have to trust your young talents or it won't matter anyway.
  14. If you go this deep into worst case hypotheticals you'll scare yourself out of doing anything to help the team.
  15. Good analogy, not sure I agree on the odds though.
  16. Every offseason teams find ways to match up their needs and wants. Sometimes it takes three team deals or another trade from a team, but things can change and circumstances can change. He should be shopped for an area of weakness to help the 2016 team or to be blown out of the water in some fashion. That's pretty much all my point is, keeping him around after this offseason is a serious hit on his trade value and pretty much guarantees he's either signed to a bad contract or let go for nothing.
  17. I think Germany is a pretty unique case and considerably different than our current issue in the Middle East. Japan as well. My only point in bringing them up was that it took full scale war to unseat those radical forces driving the culture and the government. I think, sometimes, it has to be considered that the maniacs have to die before you can rebuild something good. The issue in the Middle East is finding the maniacs. Islam as a whole has suffered without a second enlightenment period since the Christians annihilated the first. So it's tough to tell which adherents to it can be part of a more secular, modern world. Our policy, many times over, has hurt this as well. I completely agree with you on that. It's why I tend to favor the "let's just stay the hell out of it" tactic. It seems hopeless and largely bound to failure if we intervene. But we also can't pretend that choice doesn't come with some serious consequences. We're still talking about places that hurl homosexuals off buildings. Behead people in front of children to mold them into killers. Use innocents as shields for terrorism. And warp religion to stir a fervor that is hard to match. Doing nothing allows those forces to potentially gain control at the expense of the slaughter of those that would seek to change the region in a more acceptable way. It's why I said what I did earlier - I don't think there is a "good" solution.
  18. No one wants to deal him right now - the stance is to aggressively shop him this offseason. You don't HAVE to deal him, keep him if you don't get something that helps in 2016. But they better shop him.
  19. I was referring to the OF logjam. Going forward I prefer to invest at-bats in Vargas, Arcia, or Kepler than two more of Plouffe before we let him walk. If Plouffe was 26 and in this position I probably don't recommend we deal him, but the truth is that he's about to be a former Twin in two years. (Or should be) Now would be a good time to capitalize on him and free up the DH spot for some combination of our OF/1B/3B logjam. At some point you have to trust your young talent. If we don't, then we shouldn't be worried about keeping Plouffe around to compete anyway.
  20. DH should be an open competition between Kepler, Arcia, and Vargas next year. Trading Plouffe this offseason is the ideal way to solve some log jams and hopefully add a need position.
  21. To be clear, I'm not saying it always must be met with violence. I just deny that violence met with violence hasn't been effective in the past as well. That doesn't mean it will be here, though. The problem with doing nothing, or being uninvolved, is that our best allies for change die in the process. The whole mess just leaves a sea of poor choices to choose from.
  22. Just because teams know we need a catcher doesn't mean we hide trade interest. And just because the market for him looks scarce by us checking team rosters doesn't mean that's true this offseason. The smart thing to do is shop him for what we need and find interest along the way. Teams that want him will call and teams that have what we want will call. Then you sort it out and make it work.
  23. What good does it do to hide what you want? Let it be known. You may not get it and you might take a different package you like, but hiding your desired target position doesn't do you any good IMO.
  24. Plouffe makes an ideal trade asset because he's been productive, they have Sano to play third, and Plouffe is coming up to a point where you have to make a very tough decision: let him walk for a pick or extend a guy already into his thirties to a deal. I'd prefer to trade him before we arrive at that point.
  25. It's fine to target a catcher or a shortstop, i think the "under no circumstance" stuff is pretty silly. Letting other teams know what you're looking for is far more likely to net a return you want to take. The key is not to be desperate, not to say you'll only take a catcher centered deal. You take the best deal, but you sure as hell try and target a team need in the process. And yeah, trade him this offseason. I think it's a huge mistake if we don't aggressively shop him.
