  1. I don't hate Durant for it, I feel bad for him. No matter what happens in Golden State (including winning rings) it'll never look like a crown jewel in HIS legacy.
  2. It has always been that way. Those 55 and older, at one point, also probably felt that the upper age voting bloc needed to get out of the way of progress. Am I excited about the need for that to happen? No. I just accept the reality of the situation. If you want me to get excited, tell me how to change their minds and get them on board with the future. If you can't....then what choice do any of us have but to wait for their ideas to go with them?
  3. Cost isn't the only factor, Target Field is friendly to craft beer lovers, hipsters, and 20-25 year olds. It isn't a place particularly friendly for a family. Only on Sundays would I even consider bringing my family the last few years and even then my attendance dwindled out from being a former season ticket holder, to a once a year family tradition, to several years we just haven't gone at all.
  4. To the "finally free" part, he did choose to sign a 5 year extension with Oklahoma not that long ago, so he bypassed his first chance at free agency. Durant is welcome to do what he wants, I just wonder if what he's chasing (rings) is really going to fulfill what he after. Rings are supposed to be about the glory of achieving the pinnacle of your sport and the respect that comes with it, but in the current NBA we are seeing a change because of these kinds of decisions. Rings still matter, but decisions like this are changing that. I hope the counter-movement wins out. That we care less about super teams just for the sake of winning titles and care more about titles won by effort and perseverance.
  5. I totally agree, I haven't watched a Twins game in months thanks to the price they charge for out of market viewing. And I would pay if the prices were even remotely reasonable. But I've stopped going to baseball games and paying for a product that prices itself out of the average fan's market. I'll pay for other sports that I'd rather invest in.
  6. Sadly, baseball decided long ago that the almighty dollar mattered more than exposure of their product.
  7. So much of what is going on in the NBA is antithetical to why I love sports. It should be about competition and persevering over odds and becoming great. Instead we orchestrate ways to just "be great" by stacking the deck. Miami largely failed in their goals - congrats, you got some rings, but at what cost to your legacy? I'd argue Lebron accomplished more for his legacy the last two years in Cleveland than he did in his entire time in Miami. Durant is likely making the same mistake. It's bad for the NBA and just plain sad from a competition standpoint.
  8. I agree, I think they missed their window. But I do hope they look for guys like Grossman (yeah, he's coming back down to earth, but the philosophy was sound) and others. Maybe at the deadline they can clear some glut in the rotation, otherwise they don't have a lot of places to make that sort of signing.
  9. If they were open to rethinking their positions I'd hope for that, but such has been the case for a long time. The voting bloc 55 and older just doesn't change opinion, so meaningful progress past their antiquated views generally has to wait until they die off. I mean, I'd love it if there was an alternative, but there isn't. (And, I've tried, love my grandparents but there isn't much I can do but shake my head in dismay when I try to have a political conversation.)
  10. John Cena hit it out of the park yesterday I thought. You're right, the bases on both sides have become so entrenched in believing that the other side is out to get their way of life that we have a total disconnect in dialogue. And it's not getting better. Take that message above to heart and work to help your fellow American. Contrary to popular belief, it need not come at anyone's expense. (But for a remaking of the way we collect revenue for government use and, very importantly, how we spend it as well)
  11. Yeah, I wasn't clear. You've given arguments on both sides of it so I wasn't sure. I heartily endorse signing low term contracts with older players that have upside for trade fodder. The odds of that in Desmond's case were incredibly small, not to mention it doesn't even fit the example because he wasn't a "low risk, low term" type of contract.
  12. Yeah, it's funny how.....miracle of miracles!.....when you put a 22 year old in his best position to succeed he suddenly starts, I don't know, succeeding! This issue has been the fundamental issue with player development. Yeah, players are struggling...but the front office's approach to how they use them has been a huge element in that.
  13. Also, young players frequently take time to adjust. So many posters here set such ridiculous expectations for guys it's coloring the analysis of the results. If you're going to trust young players to develop that requires coaching, trust, and determination to put them in positions to succeed above all else. This team has routinely ignored all three of those tenants with these kids. It's happening to Polanco. Happened to Arcia. CF the last half a decade. I could go on.
  14. I think Miguel deserves as much blame for his under-perfomance as some here for over-inflating expectations by calling him the 2016 league MVP. Meaning, a little, but far from the biggest issue. Young players need adjustment time, it's not his "fault" he's experiencing the same thing. The team compounded the season he was most likely to need support by putting him in an awful position. That's the biggest issue.
  15. I don't think the Cubs ever did a 1 year deal on a player with a QO. And typically the terms were much smaller. So I'm not sure how you're making that comparison?
  16. Part of the problem is that neither side participates well enough in politics (or in the right way) to effect any meaningful change. Both sides pit each other against the other to keep themselves in power. Most of our problems are largely shared, if we took the time to consider it carefully.
  17. They've certainly had bad luck. Everyone does. They put their team in a position to fail with a series of choices that have overlooked one core belief that I thought this team held - play good defense. They have ignored that aspect time and again since Ryan returned.
  18. Right, it's easy to say what would've been a positive from this move with Desmond reversing a four year downward trend, but his profile this offseason was one I never want the team to invest in. Really at any stage of the team - rebuilding, contending, or somewhere in between. Invest in upside. Desmond came at a high dollar figure, with a pick attached, at age 30, on a 3-4 year downward trend, unable to play a premium position any more, and likely to have to learn a new one. Seriously, how can anyone look at that list and say "low risk". Say whatever you want about the reward part, that sure as hell isn't low risk.
  19. Also, not to steal Bark's thunder (but hopefully to join the choir!) maybe it bears repeating what parts of the world needs progressive ideas more than any other. And how many people die every year while their leadership caters to fanatics.
  20. Honestly? We may need a section of the population to die off to usher in a change. But that's probably 10-15 years away.
  21. Cruz doesn't want meaningful change, he wants a regressive, simpleton version of life. His party hates him because he is a fraud. The sooner your party recognizes that he is the face of your decline in influence. He embodies all that the majority of Americans can't stand about the GOP.
  22. Just keep adding to that list of ways to keep Arcia.
  23. Ted Cruz is a whack job. And he accomplished nothing. And he'll continue to accomplish nothing. He couldn't even appear to be the sane alternative to Trump.
  24. Man the NBA can be frustrating some times....
  25. Remember when people wanted to give him a qualifying offer after this year? I'll take a discarded box of lopsided baseballs at this point.
