  1. THe difference is that I am taking a personal shot and a shot at his professional conduct. I'm just not pretending otherwise as you seem to be about his article. Tearing down Sano publicly doesn't help Sano.
  2. Yes, I see public, personal attacks on 23 year olds as unproductive and in bad taste. He should write about sports or actual performances on the field and save the personal life examinations for another section of the newspaper.
  3. This isn't particularly accurate. WAR, on Fangraphs, uses UZR does it not? If so, it isn't nearly as reliable as you are making it out to be. Fangraphs says so itself. It's not "unreliable" (as the article says) but it also is significantly less reliable than even OPS. And, depending on the position the player mans, more limited for some players than others. And yet, despite these demonstrable limitations, we toss year to year WAR comparisons around (across different positions) like we're totally unaware of these issues. And so help you if you besmirch WAR even in the slightest....
  4. So you listed a bunch of specific personal attacks that weren't there, than show that, in fact, there was a personal attack and gloss over it? There is no difference. Was Reusse mixing personal attacks with some things that might be valid? Maybe, but the personal attack was certainly part of it. He was calling the kid's character into question and it is totally unnecessary and it only serves to turn the fan base against him or change their opinion of him as a person. If his work habits need to be corrected, they should be corrected by his employer. Not some random a-hole with a newspaper column.
  5. Now that the site is actually usable speed-wise, it's catching on. That's great to see. The effort is paying off and it's really coming along as a place to talk Purple.
  6. Absolutely, I agree with you (and my second paragraph made this painfully unclear on a re-read) and i don't know why these two issues are being compared.
  7. Also, there are clearly some places you can vote for whomever the hell you want and it won't make a difference. Every Republican in California can vote for the corpse of Ronald Reagan and it won't change the election one bit. I would say the states where your vote really matters, one way or the other, number about a dozen. So if you're not in one of those states, vote for whomever you want. In fact, I'd encourage a third party vote. Let's get some different voices.
  8. You also strawmanned that point quite a bit. There is certainly a heavy emphasis on WAR. You see it all over this site in fact. People who will agree that the defensive component of WAR is best taken in multiple year averages and rarely reliable as a data set even in single years, and then still use that very same statistic to measure players against each other on a year to year basis. And if you dare to point out that this doesn't make sense, you're basically shunned for not understanding it. I think I do understand WAR. It's why you'll never hear me use the stat unless i'm comparing players who play the same position over the course of multiple years. Beyond that the stat is given to large swings of accuracy. Look out in the SABR community and you see little regard for that. In fact, you see open hostility to anyone questioning the metric.
  9. I think pretty much every discussion about WAR hedges on it, here and in most places. I'm also pretty confident that in 20 years we'll look back and scoff at the idea WAR told us much of anything useful. I agree, however, that the old-school guys are bad about it too. There is an unnecessary combination of aggression and defensiveness from both sides.
  10. I wasn't suggesting he retire. But when that inevitable spring training story about him "feeling great!" comes back....can we all just collectively ignore it this time? He's always going to be banged up and his production isn't going back to waht we want it to be. Acceptance of what he is at this point, that's all I ask.
  11. Except there is a strong, vocal part of the metric side of the argument that doesn't concede the idea that there is still room for improvement. Or that their stats may not tell the whole story. Pitch framing was the article's example, but it goes for pretty much all of them. Don't think you have it all figured out and too often, that is exactly the opposite of what the statistics crowd wants you to believe. (In part, i imagine, because selling it as anything short of infallible sort of undermines the value of the stat) There is a lot of hubris that often looks foolish in the long run as better ways to analyze are developed.
  12. I think we should just assume from now on that full health and Mauer are never going to go together again. And we should stop inflating our expectations on that misguided sentiment.
  13. Just goes to show that metrics, like with many other things, rarely stand the test of time as infallible. They're always going to be improved upon and weaknesses will be exposed. Humility about their certainty is always wise.
  14. Glad they made the decision so the whole offseason is open to him, here's to a change in the way this ship is sailed!
  15. If you want to argue Santana may be more valuable to deal next July, there may be merit in that. But it doesn't change my opinion - you should still be seeing what's out there for him right now. If you need to wait because the value isn't there, so be it.
  16. Well, he sure wasn't planning that parade route of yours. We can be sure of that.
  17. Reusse isn't one to mask his intent very well. I thought it was painfully obvious. Sano may need someone to sit down with him and have a conversation about his work and eating habits. That someone should be a person he trusts on a personal level, not blasted out in a column by some schmo who has probably talked to Miguel a handful of times. Let's see what next season brings when they aren't jerking him around the field in the name of Trevor Plouffe. Nothing Miguel Sano did this offseason to make himself not ready for the season even compares to what his own team did to him.
  18. Guess we are starting early on our annual spring training tradition of "Now that Mauer feels 100% again, he's ready to go back to his old self!" Only to give him a litany of injury excuses by fall when it didn't happen again.
  19. Social media behavior can absolutely be a reason for termination or discipline. I'm not sure your analogy really worked here. And drunk driving can be a fireable offense for many jobs as well if driving is a requirement for your job. I don't necessarily disagree that the penalties for that behavior need to be higher, but I'm not sure bringing it into this conversation has any benefit.
  20. I hope that's the case with the new GM. I'm fairly sure the old GM was not the type to call others.
  21. I don't think him being a baseball player or making any particular amount of money means he should be attacked as a person. And, most importantly, I think it accomplishes nothing.
  22. Not until a trade happens. If it doesn't, then no, we won't know.
  23. The ringer, IGN, and several others were pretty down on the show. Just a lot of buzz about the show's drop off. I'll judge it myself as well, but I do think shows need to have solid seasons and not just a solid overall run to be judged a great show.
