  1. No, quit trying to pull that crap. Every single person I listed there was a sell-high player during a clear rebuild. Castro may be sell high right now, but we're not clearly rebuilding. (Though that may change, this season is still shaky IMO) But all offseason I stated moving Santana and Dozier should be a high priority. So I have absolutely stayed consistent. The truth is that if Suzuki, Willingham, and Plouffe only returned AAAA filler - FINE!!!!! That's ok! Sometimes those players end up contributing! That's how we got our current closer. Hell, Dozier was an 8th round pick....that's not even AAAA filler level value. The point is we got nothing. Nothing gives you no chance and getting lucky. If even one of those AAAA filler guys had turned into a viable player we have a huge gain, right now, on this team. And, worse yet, if you're on the side that believes this scouting department and FO know what they're doing - you should feel even more strongly that getting something is better than nothing! Look, glunn asked - who didn't we deal when we could have. That's the list. And for pretty much all of them we got nothing. That's wasted opportunities at getting something that could be helping now.
  2. I never scream "win now". I scream build a good organization and make smart, high percentage plays. Sometimes we do that and I praise them for it, other times we don't and I criticize them. For example, I really liked the Castro signing and applauded it all offseason. I also criticized them for not taking advantage of an opportunity to invest in the bullpen. And I hardly think you should attack others for always being on one side of the issue or the other.
  3. In Dozier's case I certainly am and I get you're trying to hold on to any thread you can in this, but the truth is that our situation right now is not the same as it was when we should've moved Wilingham or Suzuki. There was little or no reason to keep all of the players on that list except maybe Phil Hughes. And if Willingham, Plouffe, or Suzuki had netted even one contributor among them, than it's better than nothing. And that's the point. Clutching to some trumped up value of keeping them ignores how much value they could've provided if even one of them had, say, given us a functional bullpen arm out of a deal. The real simple point you seem to be railing against is that getting some lottery ticket somethings is better than nothing. It's an exceedingly low bar we somehow managed to trip over multiple times over the last 5-6 years.
  4. I'm not suggesting there was value (a nebulous term), I'm suggesting it was more than nothing. Moves that appear to be nothing yield results all the time. Hell, every pick past the first few rounds is basically devoid of value. Rebuilding teams need to avoid getting nothing, even if the result is a low upside lottery ticket. And for all of those players we chose to get nothing. (Or we will get nothing) And that's what separates right now. All of those players were at a sell high point during a clear rebuilding phase, right now that is up in the air. But I was absolutely banging the drum all offseason about Santana and Dozier for that exact reason this offseason because I saw the team still in a rebuild.
  5. Sorry, I see how I might have sounded like I suggested getting rid of him. I meant - it's time to put him into a more significant role or just make him the long guy. Being this year's version of Tonkin makes no sense to me.
  6. See, I don't know what Duffey is. I'm not sure the Twins do either. If he was truly a two inning reliever, fine. But is he? He's mostly pitching 1 inning at a time and typically with several days between appearances. I also think the team might see Wilk as a LOOGY. Is Breslow even a LOOGY? His usage doesn't suggest it either. Actually, the more I type this the more I realize how profoundly unclear the plan is for these four pitchers. Clearing that up might go a long way.
  7. So we were right! Thanks! I fail to see how 3 long relievers is some sort of secret weapon.
  8. You start with Breslow. Then you decide who your long man is between Duffy, Wilk, and Haley - be willing to remove the other two. That's three spots right there.
  9. Having a depleted minors and a shaky pitching staff (bullpen and rotation) is not exactly a comfortable situation - that's the consternation.
  10. Hell, not only did we not deal any of those players (even for meh value) and watched their sell high moment pass with no return.......we were more likely to extend those players than deal them!
  11. To be frank - you don't know any of that to be true. Nor could anyone claim that there was something of value available. And there is nothing to say that something seen then as relatively low value might have been a worthwhile acquisition. Maybe it would have been nothing, but we don't know what the market actually had. (And I'm not convinced we ever explored it)
  12. Right, add to that list the (largely) failed moves of Span and Revere and it hurts even more. Also, to add to my earlier point - one of my biggest criticisms of the previous front office was how it used free agency during a rebuild. One of the reasons we lacked trade assets was self-inflicted. If you have open spots and available funds, sign guys with upside that you might be able to turn into trade assets. Instead we frequently dove into the Kevin Correia area of the pool. Our current FO made a similar mistake this offseason with the bullpen IMO.
  13. Oilers are going to need Nugent Hopkins to be a lot more than he was this year. McDavid might be better than Kane or Toews, but right now he doesn't a Robin to his Batman. Hell, he doesn't even have Alfred.
  14. There never was and he still got skipped. This is probably leftover angst from the prior FO speaking, but I'm not ready to be that confident. Afterall, until about 48 hours ago it wasn't even clear they'd make the correct decision. Glad to see it though and I hope you're right that Berrios is in the rotation to stay.
  15. You can never know what's on the market, but off the top of my head Plouffe, Willingham, Perkins, Hughes, and Suzuki all come to mind as sell-high guys we held on to during a clear rebuilding phase. Not A-list talents necessarily, but certainly valuable guys that we will ultimately watch walk away for nothing in all likelihood.
  16. You don't have to throw Burdi straight into the fire, but having him available for late inning situations would really help this team. You could argue we have more long relievers than late inning guys in our pen right now. I can't ever recall that being the case for the Twins during my time as a fan. I don't even recall it being close.
  17. Right. Let's hope this continues so there isn't any desire to go back and revisit it.
  18. That Preds-Ducks game was intense. That could be a fun series. I also think it's Preds-Pens at the end, this may be the year for the Preds. Some things have come together perfectly for them at just the right time. But it's hockey and things shift quickly.
  19. Thank goodness saner heads prevailed and we saw him and not Nick Tepesch today.
  20. In no way do I want any part of Grienke's contract. I'm not convinced he really is back given his velocity decrease.
  21. If we deal Dozier again we should at least wait until (if) he heats up. And not for bullpen help. We missed the boat this offseason, in a big way, on that.
  22. We sure do love our long relievers!
  23. I think it's fair to point out that for a long time we applauded our farm system and at least some of that was based on how Stewart and Jay factored into the rankings. The failure of those two picks has huge ramifications and it's fair to say we might have inflated our expectations in part because of those players being overrated. Most of what we're banking our future on were signed in the international market by a completely different GM and (likely) very different scouts than the ones we're relying on for the draft. The failures in our drafting simply can't be understated. It's been bad. I hope most of the time and effort our new FO has put in has been concentrated on rectifying that problem.
