  1. I'm fairly certain that there is no OF acquisition could make this board happy. Yes, it would be great if the Twins could go out find a good defensive OF'er that wasn't inept with the bat. And additionally not give up any good prospects or commit to more than 1 year to block any prospects. Unfortunately that player doesn't exist and the alternative is just hoping that Jordan Schafer doesn't make us cry until Rosario comes up.
  2. Honestly I think I would rather owe Cuddyer 21M or Butler 30M than Cruz 60M.
  3. You seem to forget just how horrible (at offense and defense) the Twins OF'ers have been the last few years. I also understand how much fun it is to rag on Hunter's terrible defensive season (stat based) but I think he's probably middle of the road as far as recent Twins OF'ers. Kubel? Colabello? Nunez? Herrmann? Parmelee? Willy? Arcia? that is just guys from last season. At least Hunter could hit last season which is more than almost all of those guys can say.
  4. If he returns to his old self (.850 OPS) then I will deal with the defense until Mauer gets injured. Doesn't matter much now with Hunter signing.
  5. Rosario was always going to be in the minors after last years disaster. If he plays well I wouldn't be shocked if he spends some time in CF before Buxton comes. Or he gets promoted if Arcia or Vargas struggles. Signing one OF'er doesn't block him.
  6. 15M next season is fine. 4 yrs of it is awful.
  7. Here's the problem. Somebody needs to play OF next year for the Twins. Rosario and Buxton need half a season in the minors. Arcia will start on opening day but has question marks himself. If the Twins don't bring in a veteran then they will likely have somebody starting that is terrible offensively or start utility IF'ers (Nunez) that aren't good at anything. Why is Hunter perfect? 1 yr contract. Most decent veterans would be able to get 2-3 (or even 4 years) at which point they are actually blocking a prospect and likely declining. Hunter is here for a season. the casual fan should enjoy this. It's nice to have a couple of veterans in the lineup especially since the Twins are likely starting 6 young players with Sano, Buxton and Rosario on the way. And back to the first point. Somebody has to play in the OF. If not Hunter then who?
  8. Allen Craig is interesting as a bounce back. Not much defensively and injury prone but he could flat out hit until last year. Matt Joyce could be a solid one year answer in LF and the Rays are looking for salary relief.
  9. The great thing about the season is that they played real competitive in their losses. The biggest thing that makes me apprehensive about truly saying that the Gophers have turned the corner is that their only quality wins are against Iowa and Nebraska. The rest of their wins were against pretty weak teams.
  10. It's going to be interesting to see who moves up in the CFP rankings after Miss St lost. This Alabama game could make things really interesting.
  11. I would not consider trading one top prospect (Meyer, Stewart or Berrios) and some prospect depth for an ace on a reasonable length contract to be mortgaging the future. Obviously if the the cost is Sano or Buxton and one of the pitchers then that is too much but right now we are just hoping that any of those 3 mentioned pitchers become anything close to Hamels. I'm not even sure we can expect any of them to be as good as the 34/35 yr old Hamels at the end of the contract. I will take a bird in the hand rather than the bird in the bush. People remain too bullish on the outcome of prospects in this thread. How much money the Twins need to pay Hamels + Mauer is completely irrelevant when so many starters are going to be making the MLB minimum. It might not fit typical payroll strategy but the alternative is not spending the payroll or pissing that payroll away on average at best players. I also disagree with your business acumen. The Twins are setting up to get slaughtered in ticket sales if they post a couple more 90 loss seasons. I completely expect them to remain conservative and just allow that to happen but the best way to keep fans is by winning games. Despite this thread there is a 0% chance of the Twins trading for Hamels but that doesn't mean that it doesn't make sense.
  12. I really hope the Twins aren't in a position where Rosario is competing for the CF or LF job in spring training. I think his best value next season is as plan B in case any of the 3 OF'ers need a replacement. I'm bullish on Rosario still though.
  13. I would easily trade Meyer or Berrios with any 2 of our 10-20 prospects. The money is trivial. If it doesn't go to Hamels then it will go to more guys like Nolasco or simply not be spent. The Twins are in a position to have a majority of the offense making the MLB minimum even if they add a FA. When you have that you have a lot of payroll flexibility until you piss it away on average at best players. Hamels is awesome and would give the Twins a formidable rotation instead of the current mess. Yes, one pitcher makes that big of a difference for the Twins.
  14. 8 conference games in a 10 or 11 team league is much different than 2 non division games split between 7 rivals. How many years until they play both of those teams in the same year? And that doesn't even begin to consider that the Big Ten isn't a top conference anymore after Penn State has bottomed out and Maryland/Rutgers have watered the conference down. No doubt about Mason's teams but that doesn't change that those years were some of the best in the last 50. That's how sad the Gophers program has been.
  15. The sad thing is that those Mason years were some of the best since the 60's for the program. The Gophers are now taking the next step with Kill and it's exciting. It's true that the Big Ten isn't what it used to be especially for the Gophers in western half avoiding OSU and/or MSU during the regular season. The best part of this team is that they can play defense unlike pretty much all other Gophers teams (decent and lousy). Games against top opponents are still close unlike other years when the offense needed to score 40-50+ points just to be in it.
  16. They lose production but these are necessary moves for a smaller market team. The draft pick is a bonus but it's necessary for them to avoid contracts like this. This kind of deal combined with another can lead to disastrous crash for a team in a couple of years.
  17. Not much of an overpay but I'm not a fan of him. Can't field, can't run and doesn't hit for much power.
  18. Regardless of his nice AFL it would be a mistake for the Twins to enter the season with Rosario as plan A anywhere. There are basically no good stopgap CF options (Rasmus is going to get paid) and I hope the Twins find a solid LF'er. That leaves CF (stop gap), Arcia struggling or injuries as paths to Rosario being a starter if he deserves it. He won't be blocked for long and if he is blocked by good players then things are looking up for the Twins. But they better not enter the season with no plan B in LF, a shaky CF'er and a boom or bust Arcia in RF. Things can get really ugly quickly with this plan.
  19. Gibson is 27 and gets 5+K/9. Miller is 24 and has a 7.5 career K/9. The key to his future is figuring out why he struggled in 2014. His upside is way higher than Gibson and that's why his trade value is considerably higher.
  20. Stanton Martin Cuddyer Vmart We continue to see data points that teams have a ton of money to spend this offseason. It will be interesting to see if this trend continues through the entire offseason.
  21. You should be disappointed not because they won't do this but because nobody will trade a true impact player for what the Twins have unless they are putting Sano and Buxton on the table after injury plagued seasons.
  22. That Gold Glove CF'er also had one year left on his contract. They traded him and a 3/4 starter for an ace that they might still extend. I'm not sure the fanbase is going to be up in arms. I also don't think they are truly losing money. Forbes has them at roughly breakeven but that doesn't include the franchise value doubling in the last 5 years or 'other' baseball businesses that are profitable but don't fall under the official Tiger business. My previous point above shouldn't be taken as Detroit's model is better or that they won't have to rebuild but rather that they aren't going to completely collapse and face a 5+ yr rebuild. The VMart contract almost certainly isn't going to end well though. One additional point is that the Cuddyer and VMart contracts are showing that teams don't think they will be able to spend the money they have this offseason. Baseball revenues are exploding and it will be interesting to see if we are really in for a crazy offseason.
  23. All teams have to rebuild regardless of being built the 'right way' or through spending obscene amounts of money. Rich teams can rebuild faster though because they aren't handcuffed by waiting and hoping that Alex Meyer becomes an ace and instead go out and buy that FA.
  24. A Vargas for Miller swap is impossible from the Cards end. They need someone that can at least play in the OF regardless of Arcia's defense. I'm absolutely certain that neither Vargas nor Matt Adams can play in the OF. I don't think anyone is saying that they don't like Arcia long term. the key here is that Miller is very talented and you want something you have to give something. I don't look at this deal from a perspective of needing to trade Arcia because of defense but rather finding a way to get Miller. I don't think the Cards will make the trade. I just don't see them going after a Latin American OF prospect to replace a Latin American OF prospect that just died. Not because of any concerns but just the weirdness of replacing Taveras with someone quite similar.
  25. We have been saying that the Tigers were set to bottom out for years yet they still keep winning despite never having a good farm system and not developing many players. The Tigers are not going to have a longer, more difficult time building up the pipeline. They don't need to build up the pipeline because they will spend money. Baseball is not like football or basketball with salary caps. It's an uneven playing field. One great thing the Tigers have done is cashing in uncertainty of cheap prospects for really good or even elite players.
