  1. I would keep Graham over most of those prospect RP'ers. Resigning Cotts wouldn't be a bad idea either. The big decisions are Nolasco and Milone. Nolasco won't be cut but I think he is near the end. Milone (in arb) is a little expensive for a #5 with good prospects being held back.
  2. Hunter isn't a problem if all of the prospects are doing awesome. You can only start 3 and whichever prospect isn't starting should be in AAA getting everyday AB's. But Hunter would have to accept a part time role which he has said he won't so it doesn't matter much unless he changes his mind.
  3. I thought you were being critical of Ryan not extending longer contracts buying out FA years. That would have hurt more in those two cases. FWIW - The Twins actually did the optimal thing with Baker. They held a reasonable option on Baker's first FA year (effectively buying it out if they chose). They declined it when he underwent TJ. It would be harder to come out of the deal better on that. Blackburn is the reason why you don't give guaranteed contracts to guys that have exceeded expectations. He just shouldn't have had guaranteed money regardless if it bought out FA years or not.
  4. The Twins should have a veteran on the bench so Walker or Kepler can either get full time AB's in AAA or full time AB's on the Twins. Neither should spend the season in the majors on the bench. The biggest question about the Twins OF next year is whether or not Arcia is on shaky ground with the Twins FO (issues behind the scenes) or they just chalk his 2nd half collapse (Drew Butera level ineptitude) to a nagging injury and will actually give him a shot next year. He certainly has talent but whatever happened to him has me concerned that he won't be given a shot next training camp.
  5. I would be fine with Hunter and Arcia platooning and Buxton and Kepler opening the season in AAA. There are still a lot of question marks in the OF. Hicks had one hot month, one alright month (.701 OPS) and 3 terrible months. Rosario doesn't walk and pitchers might adjust to him. Can he adjust? Arcia completely fell apart. Kepler and Buxton are awesome but it is still questionable when they will hit MLB pitching Injuries happen But if Hunter is against a platoon or part time role then there isn't an option I guess. He shouldn't be a full time starter.
  6. He has plenty to learn at AAA. One big reason that he has struggled so much is that he only has 300 AA/AAA AB's. He hasn't even seen AAAA junkballers and adjusted to them yet.
  7. I'm guessing that Price, Stroman and Estrada are the 1/2/3 for the rotation so they can pick one of Dickey or Buehrle for the #4 spot. No reason to take 5 starters.
  8. Buehrle is short on the dominant at any point in his career metric. Even if the career stat thresholds need to be moved downward we are talking about a HOF where Curt Schilling and possibly Roy Halladay won't find enough support to get in. This is a shot to my fantasy team. I didn't expect him to be part of my starting lineup all season but you don't have many options in a 24 tm league. He kind of saved my season and got me to the semi-finals.
  9. I think there will be a big reversal of public opinion and the toleration of guns in the US over the next 5 years. What is being fought about now will seem very moderate compared to the rather strict laws that end up being enacted.
  10. The problem is that there is literally nothing in his past that says that he can maintain this level of play. He should be solid but before I propose handing out extensions I want to be sure that this is his true talent level. He could very easily hit .255/.295/.355/.650 with below avg defense next season. That isn't dreadfully awful at SS but that isn't a guy that I think should be locked up.
  11. There could be all kinds of reasons but he might not have been on the scouts radar early in the season (the GCL part of his season) and they might not have paid as much attention to him. And we are only talking about 31 games in the GCL for a position player. If a scout only saw a few games and Palacios didn't stand out at the plate or in the field he might not have jumped up their personal rankings. Or any number of reasons.
  12. Which shootings are you talking about? SC was ranked #34, TN #38, VA #20 and OR was ranked #18. They aren't the worst if that is what you meant. I can tell you one thing that won't work - concealed carry. This is what happens when untrained enthusiasts get involved - http://www.dailykos.com/story/2015/09/30/1426395/-Carjacking-victim-allegedly-shot-in-head-by-responsible-gunowner-who-started-shooting-at-carjackers#
  13. They have addressed the discrepancy between league lists before. The rankings are heavily dependent based on what the league scouts tell them. There is a chance that GCL scouts didn't get a chance to see him much and he didn't rise in their rankings like he did in the appy league.
  14. Here is an article with a chart showing gun deaths vs gun control laws. This isn't the same as mass shootings but it should show that gun control does actually show some results. Certainly better results than throwing your hands in the air and saying 'these things just happen'. http://www.slate.com/blogs/the_slatest/2015/10/02/gun_control_by_state_tougher_laws_mean_fewer_deaths.html
  15. We are talking about mass shootings. Assault rifles and handguns are the weapons of choice in these situations. This is just another area where the far right is going to get smashed during the next decade. People are not going to accept that 'this stuff just happens' and consider this the new normal. It is ABSOLUTELY UNACCEPTABLE. The longer that the GOP drags their feet on (and denies) the issue then the more restrictive the law will be that eventually get passed. These mass shootings are becoming more frequent and worse.
  16. The difference is track record. Escobar has 900 good MLB AB's the last 2 seasons and everything before that is rather underwhelming. His isoP this season looks like a complete fluke. He has however done enough to go into next season as the starter. If the Twins started handing out extensions to every player that had 2 seasons that were far above expectations then they would have a roster clogged with mediocre players that regressed but were signed to long term contracts.
  17. I don't think that is true. I think suspended players can be sent on rehab assignments for a couple of weeks following their suspension. They may or may not need to consent to this though. this is not directly from the CBA but a second site's interpretation - http://www.thecubreporter.com/book/export/html/3506
  18. The pitchforks came out way too early regarding Santana. I was surprised that the Twins didn't start him in the minors for a couple of weeks instead of throwing him into the rotation ice cold. I was not surprised that he struggled. It would be disappointing if May isn't given the chance to start. Santana Hughes Gibson Competition May Duffey Milone - preferably the long man in the bullpen that gets 2-3 innings/game so he could start on short notice. Berrios - ticketed to AAA Nolasco
  19. The Twins have actual legit MI prospects that could become good MLB players but they don't have a glut of MI prospects. There are of course exceptions to this but the typical trade is like this: late 20's (or older) veteran that is getting a little expensive is traded for prospects. One team is usually rebuilding and the other team is contending. If you are trading Dozier then you are considering the Twins to be the rebuilding team in that equation and they aren't. They don't need more prospects except at catcher.
  20. His high-ish arb price works against his trade value. He might still be cost controlled (in arb) but he is becoming an expensive 4/5 starter. The Twins would still be able to trade him for something but the market for soft tossing 4/5 starters earning 4-5M isn't that great.
  21. Perhaps that should have been taken into account when the pitchforks were coming out.
  22. Observations - I am happy that one of the many college RP'ers has been able to transition to the starter role - I look at swstr% for flukey K rates. For example Worley always had ridiculously low swstr%. Duffey's swstr% is very good and means that he could maintain a good K rate even if it is a little lower. - Pelfrey should be given a handshake and told that he isn't needed - Nolasco should be told that going into spring training there isn't a roster spot for you (bullpen or rotation) and you need to lights out or injured to avoid being cut. This won't happen but it should. - Milone is the tough decision. Extra starters are always needed but his arb price won't be cheap, he doesn't have much trade value and I would like Duffey and May to start out in the rotation with Berrios as the 1st guy up. Santana Hughes Gibson May Duffey Milone - long relief Berrios - AAA
  23. People's opinion of Santana sure changed quickly.
  24. I knew that this was going to be an awesome topic for the offseason since it is all but inevitable that they resign Hunter. There will be some epic threads to come. I would be fine with resigning Hunter IF it was as the 4th OF'er that started 40-60 games here and there. He doesn't need to play CF when the roster includes Hicks, Buxton (probably in AAA at the beginning), Rosario and Santana. The big loser in this is Arcia and to a lesser extent Vargas. Arcia would either have to make the team as a starter (over Buxton and Kepler) or be cut. But of course Hunter will be resigned as a starter and that is where this doesn't make any sense at all.
  25. This is a backwards way to look at this. There are absolutely going to be bad teams that have an ace but it is very difficult to be a legitimate contender without an ace. And ace as used in this thread definitely means a top 20-30 starter in baseball and there isn't an equal distribution among teams. A bunch of crappy pitchers that were merely the best of the bad ones on their team do not qualify as aces as the term is used here.
