  1. This is a team in a mess. They have a decent farm system but their MLB roster is a mess. They pretty much have to extend Ellsbury and Pedroia because there isn't much in the FA market to spend their money on.
  2. I don't believe the O's will continue to be lucky with a lesser roster but luckily for them they have some high end talent on the team and coming up. With a little luck this can be a contender in the east. It won't be easy though since all 4 teams will be factors.
  3. This is just getting ridiculous. they have been playing a player short (2 actually since they have Butera on the roster) and they seem to continually have no idea what is wrong with players. I can understand those that are defending the inaction because there is some uncertainty when dealing with injuries but this is a continual issue with the Twins and I'm certain that it happens a lot more for the Twins.
  4. I think the reason that Mauer is DH'ing has to do with the fact that the primary DH can play catcher and Mauer won't get beat up as much. If the Twins had a Kubel type player at DH and were winning then I would expect to see Mauer behind the plate more. The only thing that scares me about Mauer is that the end of the contract will likely be a poor value. But that's true of pretty much all of the mega contracts that get signed. At some point you have to commit money to stars.
  5. I don't understand why this is one or the other. You need both (winning team and a nice stadium). I understand that fans are impatient but this team is coming off of a decade of success and at some point every team has to retool. I also don't understand where everyone wants to spend the money. Paying 30+ yr old FA's big bucks typically is a bad idea and there are only a few Willingham type contracts every year. If you think Blackburn, Nishi and Capps are bad contracts then you haven't seen anything yet if the Twins start spending tons of money. There will probably be an AS game benefit in attendance. Usually to qualify for tickets you need to be at least a partial season ticket holder for 2 seasons. that will help deal with the losing team on the field.
  6. It will probably be very difficult to get tickets for any of the events. In '05 (or '06) I had to be a 20 game season ticket holder for two seasons (in Detroit) to be able to buy tickets. The total package was $250 and we could have easily have sold the AS game ticket for more. Futures game tickets were selling for 50-100 IIRC and it's actually more interesting than the AS game.
  7. I honestly fail to see the point in trading Mauer. It might free up payroll space but the alternative is dropping 60+M on two 30+ yr old non-ace starters instead of one (they can afford to get one pitcher this offseason) with that money. While that would improve the rotation I don't see it actually making the team better, short-term or long-term. The Twin's problem isn't that they don't have cash available to spend but rather that there aren't many good options to spend it on.
  8. I've also thought the Twins should offer Burton a 2 yr contract (3rd yr option) for something like 2/6M. You don't want to invest a lot of money in a RP'er with arm problems but this buys out 1-2 years of FA and allows for some stability in the bullpen. I completely disagree with offering Diamond a contract. he's 26 and he has 5 more seasons before he becomes a FA. Let the Blackburn contract be a warning and go year to year in arb with a relatively low upside pitcher. Plouffe needs to show more before you start guaranteeing 5+ yrs of money for the same reasons as Diamond. Similar for revere. duensing is 29 with 3 more arb years. go year to year since 3 yrs is about as long as I want to guarantee money to a RP'er. And you don't really gain a lot by buying out yrs early.
  9. Upton is a hard player to figure out. He has tons of potential and has been pretty good as a youngster but I think the rift comes from a bad attitude and he dogs it some. This has nothing to do with Gibson not working well with stars. It's easy to be critical of the manager but I find it refreshing that a player can't get away with crap because that infects the whole team. You forgot to mention two of their better arms (Bradley and Chafin). A few problems with walks but they do have considerable upside.
  10. Wow! You have a way of twisting numbers until they appear good. A 5.71 ERA doesn't help anyone. the Twins have a 7 man pen and there are other pitchers like Burnett that can go 2+ innings.
  11. Rosario with a nice day. 3/6 with a 3B and a HR.
  12. Arcia and Polanco with HR's also.
  13. I think it's really unlikely that the Red Sox are going dump everyone on their roster and rebuild. This move was about dumping Crawford and Beckett w/o being on the hook for their contracts. I'm sure they didn't want to include AGonz but that's the price that they paid. In theory at least they can use that money to sign whatever FA's they want since they only have about 60M committed next season. In reality there isn't much on the FA market to spend that money on.
  14. That might be possible or it might not. Even if it was Morneau shouldn't be locked up for 4 years (3 yr ext). go yr to yr with vesting options so you don't end up with a 10M long-term cheerleader.
  15. I think you think that there is this massive difference between AA and AAA. There isn't.
  16. the new CBA is here - http://bizofbaseball.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=5678:2012-2016-basic-agreement&catid=36:cbas&Itemid=48 On pages 12-16 they talk about maximum reduction of a player's salary and they don't distinguish between veterans and those with <6 yrs of service. It's everyone. the smallest extension that Morneau can be offered is around 11M/yr. Imo - you just let Morneau play out the contract. there's a chance that you might be able to land a decent prospect at the deadline and there's even a chance that he performs good enough to make a qualifying offer for. I'm a big fan of Morneau and short contracts are not an issue for the Twins currently. I'm really scared that the Twins are going to overpay for a mediocre 30+ yr old starter.
  17. I'm guessing that most teams didn't bother making a claim since the Dodgers probably put their whole 40 man roster on waivers to disguise the guys they wanted to make thru. Additionally only two of the prospects are actually interesting. Dejesus and Sands are backups, Rubby just had TJ and Webster isn't on the 40 man (didn't need to pass thru waivers). If any of the 3 prospects had been claimed then the Dodgers would have just pulled them back and sent that prospect as a PTBNL in the offseason.
  18. That sounds right now that you mention it but he still messed up his arm pretty bad the following season. I remember that ETown rotation since they were really tall (6'5"+) and they dominated the league.
  19. Robertson is probably the best example that has been mentioned but at the same time he was a 3rd rd pick that started in Beloit (skipping Etown) his first full season with the Twins. And he also missed time in Beloit (only 16 starts) and messed up his arm the following season in Ft Myers.
  20. Steve Singleton? Really? You're talking about guys that profile as backups at the MLB level. This is the argument that elite prospects would still be in A ball?
  21. The Twins are certainly conservative when promoting prospects but their seems to be this myth that Trout/Harper (and any other good prospect) would still be in A ball if they were in the Twins system. I don't believe this is true at all. One reason that the Twins haven't promoted prospects faster is that they have not had prospects that deserved to be promoted faster. I want people to start naming names of prospects that should have been promoted faster. i'm not interested in guys that weren't promoted from AAA because of whatever reason (money, veteran manlove, etc...). i'm talking about guys that languished for too long in the low minors.
  22. It applies to arbitration cases but it also applies contract extensions (at least under the old CBA).

    Strasburg

Agreed 100%. If they were planning to cap his innings, they should have had the foresight to shut him down throughout the season instead of at the end so he misses the playoffs. But I don't blame them for capping his innings. 160 is a lot for a guy his age returning from TJS. People act like starting and stopping or shifting him to the bullpen is the same capping his innings. it's not and it probably more dangerous than having him simply pitch for the whole season.
  24. Unless something changed in the last CBA you need to let a player hit FA if you want to pay him <80% of his previous contract (yearly value). That means that you must extend him at around 11M/yr. The Twins aren't getting a potential decent starter this offseason for Morneau. About the only thing to do now is ride out Morneau's last year and potentially deal him at the deadline when he will have been healthy longer and will be owed less money.
  25. I 100% agree with taking Buxton and I liked Berrios at the time. This wasn't really unanimous though at the time. The complaints were that his secondary stuff wasn't developed enough IIRC. I think some have too many expectation for the supplemental round or the 2nd/3rd in a weak draft. I would have preferred taking a flyer on a couple of HS arms instead of the RP's. They might not have a great chance to stick as starters (it is greater than 0%) but it's not that likely that a HS pitcher drafted in the 1s/2/3 rds will make it either. What I find strange is that the complaints about Berrios would have almost certainly have been true of any of the HS arms. Walker was a nice upside pick even with the contact concerns.
