  1. The main argument for Escobar is that he's a whopping 2 yrs younger and that allows for more potential projection for his hitting. I disagree. When you OPS .650 throughout a MiLB career there isn't any additional projection of hitting better than someone that did the same but was two years older. If he had been showing some gradual improvement along the way then perhaps but that's not true either.
  2. Safeco is a brilliant design but I'm not sure it would work as well in MN. For one thing there is the space issue that has been mentioned. Another reason that it works well in Seattle is that Safeco feels like it's down the hill and Seattle's skyline is still prominently visible. I agree with the comments about Miller Park. It's a nice park but it really have that same outdoor feel since you can't really see out of the park. I haven't been to Target Field yet but Comerica and Safeco are great parks and Target Field photos feel similar.
  3. Fixing flawed mechanics sounds like changing a gf/bf. Perhaps those mechanics can be smoothed out but I think you largely get what you see. Typically when I hear about mechanics being fixed it leads to a lower velocity actually. that might sound like the opposite from what you expect but usually improved mechanics usually are targeting improved control and/or better movement. Taking a little velocity off of the fastball can help with both of those. If his physical projection balances out those losses then he's still throwing in the low to mid 90's with a devastating slider. Now if he can develop just an average change then you have a potential ace. Right now Stewart and Bryant are moving to the top of the 2nd tier (behind Gray/Appel). I have already said why I'm concerned about Manaea and Meadows/Frazier haven't put them into the buxton level of prospect. Denney is kind of a wild card and I haven't dug too deep into Moran but I will over the next couple of weeks.
  4. You guys are really frustrating. Arguing that one guy is significantly better than the other is like putting lipstick on a pig. It's nice that both are off the hot starts but both of them are utility infielders at best. It really doesn't matter imo if Escobar is 2 yrs younger since he has put up a completely unimpressive .266/.305/.353/.658 slash line through the minors with zero improvement as he moved up. tbh I will be happy if either of these guys hit better than .600 OPS at the MLB level. At least Dozier has a little potential since he hit .779 OPS through the minors although he was a 4 year college player so he was older than Florimon/Escobar.
  5. Morales has gone ice cold with just 2 hits in his last 8 games. sano with and ordinary 2/4 day. Boring... Salcedo has 11K, 0BB and a 4.82 ERA in 9.1 IP out of the bullpen this year. Walker continues his hot streak with a HR and 3B. Slama pretty much destroyed any chance of an MLB callup for awhile with his 3rd implosion this season. 18.47 ERA.
  6. I can see Andrew McCutchen although that's a fairly standard comp for toolsy players with good but not great projected power. So far he looks like a good average hitter with good strike zone control and at least 10-15 HR power. It's possible that he becomes a .300+ hitter with a .375+ OBP and 20+ HR's. In CF that's a perennial AS and potential MVP.
  7. Your article title. You did put a question mark after it but it's a stretch to consider his success questionable. You also said that it seems to be helping even though he still only has one hit in that selective sample.
  8. It's a little early to call him a success story regardless of how loosely you use the word success. It's encouraging that he has only K'd once in the last 3 games.
  9. That article mistakenly used his weight when he signed. I think he might have been 195 as a 16 yr old. Spring training articles listed his weight in the 230-240 range (at age 19) and Molitor recently expressed doubts that Sano would stick at 3B.
  10. I think the problem with Trey Ball in the top 10 (definitely at #4) is that there is too much projection needed for him to be an MLB'er. He's 6'6" 175 and sits in the high 80's/low 90's area with his fastball. A guy like Stewart is already in the low to mid 90's and it sounds like his slider is better currently. Ball could end up being a great pitcher but his floor is someone that doesn't make it out of A ball. I don't mind taking risk but Ball is a little too risky for me and I'm not certain what his likely upside is.
  11. Right now both guys are hitting so I wouldn't make any significant changes since neither of these guys actually profile as hitters. I'm hoping that Escobar starts getting more playing time but I'm not going to lose any sleep over either of them sitting. It's too bad that Escobar can't snag any playing at 2B but it seems that Carroll will get those starts.
  12. I think the Twins took the 4 college RP'ers last year because they were unimpressed with the HS arms that were available. They needed to add arms to the org and I think they wanted velocity also. While others say that there aren't many college RP'ers that turn into starters the Twins probably felt like the HS arms were similar longshots. And they can always become part of a potential power bullpen which would be really nice to have. My concern with Manaea at #4 is that he still has inconsistent secondary pitches. A middle of the rotation arm at #4 is fine as downside but Manaea probably turns into a reliever if he doesn't make progress on those secondary pitches. That's not okay at #4.
  13. Taking Stewart would be against everything the Twins have always done but I like it. Take someone with true ace potential and hope for the best. For me is moving into that tier with Bryant/Frazier/Meadows (edit - Denney also) and possibly Manaea. I feel uneasy about Manaea for some reason.
  14. He's still lean but you can see how much he has filled out since 2010. It looks like the one knock on Kepler is still there. He has a nice swing that should result in a high BA with a lot of line drives but there might not be enough loft to hit many HR's. I'm still pretty excited about him but I'm concerned that there will be some that are disappointed if he only hits 15 HR's as a LF/RF'er.
  15. He was all kinds of awful and can barely maintain a .300 OBP. It's nice he had a breakout year and is finally a halfway decent player but I think Twins fans would have lost their minds had Gomez stayed. And he's still batting 7th for Milwaukee.
  16. Polanco and Goodrum are now batting .300+ and Harrison is almost up to .300 (OPS = .849) after a slow start. Benson and Herrmann are hanging out just below the Mendoza line although that is an improvement for Benson. Colabello Just another day for Sano - 2/3 2B BB
  17. I think the bonus pools does that pretty well. I would also be concerned about MLB taking over the academies and not expanding the network. right now if teams see an opportunity in a new place (like Brazil) they spend the big bucks to be there. that might not happen with MLB running the show. There was also some speculation that Puerto Rico participating in the MLB draft led to a nationwide decline of baseball. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/17/sports/baseball/puerto-rico-traces-decline-in-prospects-to-inclusion-in-the-baseball-draft.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0
  18. The problem is that there is no guarantee that those guys will be there or that they will sign. I think there is a substantial step down from Meadows/Bryant/Frazier to Anderson/Stanek.
  19. Obviously the answer is to convert him to RP. Poor DPJ. Almost every player that he passionately disliked turned into good players (plouffe and Perkins) or continued to put up good seasons (Cuddyer).
  20. There's that but you saw bigger shifts from several small/mid markets teams (Pirates and Royals notably) at the same time. I think it just became evident that teams needed to be involved internationally to stay competitive. I'm just glad that the Twins are now involved internationally since they basically ignored it until a couple of years ago.
  21. Rosario continues his great start with 4H and a HR. Pretty much everyone except Sano had an awesome game. Unfortunately Ft Myers used up all of the hits for the Twins system today.
  22. diehard is still believes the Twins are in the pre-Sano (pre-Target Field) mindset. Something changed that year and although I don't recall the Twins spending 1M+ (on one prospect) for a couple of years they were significantly more active internationally after that.
  23. I also don't think that the Pirates would trade Hanson since they don't seem like they are ready for the 'go for it' trade but my dreams start there instead of a borderline top 10 prospect in baseball.
