Where is the dislike button? I predict this thread will be locked by tomorrow. It's too bad because the article was well written and researched. It's newsworthy because of the movie and there simply aren't very many African Americans in baseball at any level. Hicks says it best in the article.
I'll take some Tonkin unless Mastro is still hobbled. the Twins need at least one healthy backup OF'er. I think Arcia's promotion will be when he will be up for good and not a 3 game stint. That leaves Herrmann and Benson (who hasn't hit anything).
Goodrum briefly pushed his average over .300 before going hitless in the 2nd game. Buxton has dropped to .423 with a merely mortal day picking up a hit and 2 BB's in the DH (8 PA's). Melatokis cruised through 5 innings with 7K and 1 BB. Boyd did alright in the 1st game - 5 IP, 6K's and 1 BB but 3 ER. Rochester only managed 6 H's in their DH and Slama got rocked in a tie game. Colabello managed another HR (#4). He's kind of the feel good story for the year. Vargas with a HR and Rosario with his usual pair of hits. Meyer with an alright game going 5 IP with 6 K's, 2 BB's and 2 ER's. 89 pitches and 56 strikes.
Sickels scouting report makes it sound like Pinto is a fringe starter that is better as a backup. C or C+ is a pretty fair grade and it's why nobody should be penciling him in as a part time DH.
The summary makes it sound like Pinto is an ideal backup that can catch 40-80 games/yr and not hurt the team ala butera. Not great defensively but sounds like he's playable behind the plate unlike Doumit. Minor League Prospect Note: Josmil Pinto, C, Twins - Minor League Ball
He's just in that next tier of players for me so #7 sounds about right. Appel Gray Meadows Bryant - for some unknown reason I always type out Humphries for him (former UM bballer?) Frazier Manaea - is the top of the tier but the others aren't really ranked Denney Stewart/Ball - For those yammering on and on about getting an ace then these two HS'ers are the ones to look at although they come with more risk Shipley Anderson
Mastro can be the answer in CF but the team still needs another CF'er capable of actually playing the position if Hicks is sent down. I also Borbon is capable of a .280+/.330/.380/.710 line as an MLB'er. That a pretty valuable asset coming from a 27 yr old that has average or better CF defense. I think this is a good way to add talent to the org. In addition to that the Twins are one trade/injury to Mauer/Doumit/Morneau/Willy/Parmelee from opening up a spot in the OF in the OF for Arcia. what happens if a second injury/trade occurs? Clete Thomas time? that sounds awesome.
These are the two most complete teams right now. The Cards lack the top end pitching after Wainright and the Giants lack the hitting depth. The Dodgers are a potential mess. The best AL teams are similarly flawed. It's fun so far since one of my co-workers is a Braves fan.
Your comparison is truly awful. Greinke taunted him and wanted to fight. Quentin was not justified at all to start a fight but Greinke was a willing participant and got his shots in. All he needed to do was sidestep the out of control Quentin who would have been pounded by Greinke's teammates. I understand there is male need to engage someone like Quentin but he should also realize how important he is to his team.
I would consider to be his natural approach to hitting since he has done this at every level regardless of lineup position. He's a patient hitter but I'm not surprised that this approach doesn't initially lead to struggles jumping to the majors. Long-term it should yield very good results though.
It wouldn't be the first time that smart people bought into a myth. There just haven't been many drafted high. I actually don't have Denney on my list of BPA's at #4 but there seems to be an argument for him and things could change in the next couple of months.
He's a 150M #2 pitcher that is extremely important to his team. All he needs to do is side step Quentin when he charges and his catcher pummels Quentin. Instead he met Quentin's charge lowering his shoulder despite giving up 50 lbs and momentum to him. He's not wrong in his actions but people get injured when they get into fights. That's how life works and I don't feel sorry for him.
where is your proof that HS catchers drafted high don't work out? there have only been 4 drafted in the top 15 since Mauer was drafted a decade ago. And other than Skipworth none of them had one of the best bats in their draft classes. In addition to that I don't draft Denney because he's a catcher. I draft Denney because he has one of the best bats in the draft class. It's a bonus that he's a catcher.
I don't have any problem with Quentin getting a long suspension or getting pummeled. I disagree with the woe is Greinke because he got hurt. he has the right to defend (doesn't have to) the mound but he was part of a fight. Getting injured is what happens in fights.
Apparently Greinke swore at him and didn't attempt to avoid contact at all. As a matter of fact he went towards Quentin. And then both Greinke and the catcher are on top of Quentin punching him. This is what Quentin deserved but Greinke did nothing to avoid the situation and took it to Quentin. Injuries happen in these situations.
Was Greinke also showing roid rage by dropping his shoulder? What about Kemp who was getting into with Quentin after the game? Apparently these two have a history and Greinke might have said something after hitting him. Quentin is in the wrong for charging the mound but Greinke aggravated things and took him on ala Nolan Ryan. I'm a big Greinke fan but the Dodgers have joined the Yankees as teams I want to see fail.
Borbon is a great 4th OF'er that can start in CF for an extended period of time. Boggs potentially has a better bat but you really don't want to play him in CF for more than a game or two. With Mastro and Benson dinged up, borbon makes sense since he can actually fill in in CF. It's a little inconvenient to make the move since Hicks should be given a couple more weeks to try to play through this adversity but adding Borbon to the team makes sense.
Strikeouts will keep him from being promoted imo. I'm not sure that I buy 'defense prevented him from being promoted' last season. I don't see a big difference between butchering plays at low A and high A.
I'm not sure Denney is really comparable to a majority of HS catchers that have been drafted in the last decade though. There have been very few picked in the top 15 and I'm guessing very few had a bat that was considered to among the best in the draft class. All of the top 15 HS catching picks since 2001 2008 - Skipworth - #6 - really good bat that didn't develop 2008 - Mesoraco - #15 - not a premier talent but has developed into a solid catcher soon to be in a starting job 2005 - Snyder - #13 - made the majors briefly as a 1Bman 2004 - Walker - #11 - solid starter at 2B 2001 - Mauer - sort of good
