  1. Kirilloff over all those guys? Really? esp. over Rooker or Badoo who are playing the same position, have 2 functioning elbows, can hit better, and are properly socialized...
  2. Ahem. Remember when Berrios was in AAA in 2016 and 2017?
  3. Wonderful to see a true rendition of the oft messed up Foundations' lyrics. Methinks the next stanza is more appropriate for the discussion in hand: And then worst of all (Worst of all) You never call, baby When you say you will (Say you will) But I love you still
  4. Well, I kinda happen to live in a semi Pirates fan base and the word here is $ relief. Also who of: Kepler, Kirilloff, Gordon, Gonsalves (2 of) Burdi, Bard, Reed, Melotakis is not a young player a team would not like to build on?
  5. This is the other thing that makes me skeptical about Otani wanting to come to MN: Expectations. Unless the Twins get another SP better than him, he will be their de facto ace, which might just be too much to handle his first season. In other teams, there are clear aces
  6. I get the argument that Minneapolis might be a better-suited place for him, since NY, LA, Boston are "too big", according to some discussions regarding his personal preferences. On the other hand, the Seattle metro is just 200K people bigger than the MPLS-SP metro area and San Diego's is right about the Twin Cities' size. Both have direct flights to Tokyo. Both have better weather and living conditions than Minneapolis/St. Paul, esp. San Diego, and much more Japanese population. Other than trying to sell the young core and potentially competing for a while and being part of it, I just don't see the Twins being able to sell much more, other maybe Fort Myers, which is a much better ST facility than anything in AZ, and Target Field and his agent asked for some reason teams to disclose details about facilities. But, yeah, the Twin Cities kinda such as far as living environment compared to other places in the majors...
  7. Dereck Rodriguez (Pudge Jr) signed as a free agent with the Giants.
  8. Depends what else happens, like signing Otani. I think that at this point Santana will regress and will be behind Gibson at the Twins rotation depth and that Dozier and him can bring a good pitcher back at less cost than signing Darvish long term (which is not something I like them to do because of age.) Add the fact that Santana will likely have his 2019 option vest, and it becomes even bigger of a problem, blocking someone like (let say) May or Gonsalves or Romero. If the Twins start spring Training with Dozier and Santana it will mean that the FO blew an opportunity. Both of them are considerably older than the Twins' core players and the Twins should move towards the direction of building a core the will be at its prime for a long time.
  9. How about Porcello for Cespedes? or even Fullmer (and MLB-ready top 100 SP) for Cespedes? How about Michael Pineda for Jesus Montero and Hector Noesi? Or Mike Leake for Adam Duvall? It happens.
  10. Because, esp. the Mets, they would value a veteran presence.' And Santana does not come alone. Dozier will be included in the trade, and both of these teams are sorely lacking second basemen. The trade is Santana+Dozier for 1 young top of the rotation SP. (and what it takes to balance it on both sides in prospects)
  11. Do you remember who the Red Sox traded to the A's for Cespedes? Or who Detroit traded to the Red Sox for the same Cespedes? It does happen.
  12. They don't need more than 5, if they are getting Santana back for one in the rotation, and they have enough pitchers to fill their rotation appropriately. They need 3, one of which can go to the Twins. Examples: (The Twins target one of the top 3; other than Greinke for the Dbacks) Mets: Jacob deGrom Noah Syndergaard Steven Matz ----- Robert Gsellman Matt Harvey Zack Wheeler Chris Flexen Diamondbacks: Greinke Ray Walker --- Corbin Godley Banda Miller Shipley And as you can see, under the line, in both of the teams, there is plenty of talent that is better than what the Twins have right now, and definitely enough for them to pick 2 to fill in a rotation, plus stash a bunch in AAA "just in case". And they have more coming too.
  13. The Mets and the Diamondbacks do; albeit not all that established. Being "established" should not be one of the Twins' requirements here...
  14. Not necessarily. There are teams that have a whole bunch of young MLB ready pitchers who need a second baseman and also would like to have an experienced veteran. Dbacks and the Mets are primes examples of 2 such teams.
  15. Yes they do. Because they are rebuilding and want to shed salary. I bet that if you call the Mets, or the Dodgers, or the Dbacks, or the Angels (for example), they do not hang the phone.
  16. You will not trade them for prospects. You will trade them for young top of the rotation type starters.
  17. To compete with the Indians, Astros, and Dodgers they need more than that: 2 SP better than Berrios, 3 end of the pen pitchers, including a closer and 2 set up men, and maybe a RH power bat who can play OF or DH. And that assumes that Otani and Darvish will not end up in one of these 3 teams.
  18. Got to add Santana and Dozier (and the lesser valued Vargas and Grossman) as trade bait from the bigs. They are considerably older than the team core at this point. I think that the Twins should be creative and go for more than 1:1 trades. Not sure what it would take to get Cole from Pittsburgh, but I would rather see what will take to take Cole, plus Rivero (who is about to get pretty expensive via arbitration), plus McCutchen. Pittsburgh has plenty of young arms to want a deal where the bats are the centerpiece. I think getting Cutch back who will be at least as good, if no better than Kepler next season (and replaced by Rooker in 2019), I can give them Kepler. Then I would add their local product, Kirilloff and Gordon. Two out of those will plug in their team right away. Then I would offer them their pick of up to 2 of the non-protected relievers (Burdi, Bard, Reed, Melotakis,) and if they really want Gonsalves to put them over the top, they should take him. The Twins will take $14.5M + ~7.5M + ~ 3M = ~25M a year for 2018. This way the Twins get a number two, a 25 yo stud closer, and a 4 win or so RHB OF in his last season before he becomes a FA... This makes the Twins a better team now and in the future.
  19. Regarding Wade, I am not that optimistic after this season (and AFL) as I was after the previous season. What concerns me: a. His durability. 2017 was the first season he played in more than 88 games, and got his worst OBP (.805) in the regular season and went all the way down to .763 in the AFL. b. His power should have been better. 32 xBH (7 HR) out of 124, make him pretty much a singles hitter. That 25.8% xBH is Nick Punto territory (career 23.4% xBH). He will be 24 1/1/18. Those numbers should definitely be better by now. c. Will he come back from his concussion? He also missed a couple months in 2016 with injuries. I got to see bit more of Littell video (and in person next ST) before I form a solid opinion, but I think that he is underrated. Other than the W-L numbers, his 2016 in the Mariners organization was equally good as his 2017, so he has been building up as he moves levels. He was drafted as a High Schooler and these guys sometimes take time to click and Littell looks like he did. I'd have him higher for Thorpe (who still walks too many) for sure, just not sure how high yet. Diaz hit .292/.329/.444 as a 20 year old in full season A ball and decreased his K% all the way down to 15.7%, which is pretty darn good for a power hitter. Definitely a top 10 talent, even though this organization got better than last year.
  20. The team that will sign Michael Pineda will do exactly that... Burdi has to be on the active roster for 90 days in 2018, otherwise he goes back to the Twins. Cannot be stashed away as a rule 5 draft pick. Has to be on the 25 man roster and not on the DL for at least 3 months.
  21. There is a bit of a small print that requires someone to spend a full 90 days on the active roster as a Rule 5 pick. So no stashing on the DL the full season. He has to be on the majors' bench for 3 months.
  22. The Phillies and the Padres do not belong in the same sentence. The Phillies are not a small market team and they are on the down side of the curve in a rapid rebuild. Matter of fact, they are the team that left Appel go who a. throws harder than Stewart b. is equally wild. and c. has pitched at a higher level. They will have about $50-75M to spend next off-season at the first rate FAs Can someone hide Stewart in their pen for a whole year? If I where them, I'd rather hide Reed or Burdi to tell you the truth...
  23. Compare and contrast Santana's peak with Doc Gooden's peak. Pretty similar, with Gooden having one of the most dominant seasons ever, plus Gooden has a ring. If Gooden is not in, Santana should not be in. Thome will make it, but I feel that he is as much a Twin, as Brett Favre is a Viking. Thome killed the Twins.
  24. The sad story about this is that both the guy who drafted them and the guy who was running the system that failed to develop them, were given promotions in the organization... No accountability.
  25. Let's see: Rogers, Moya, Melotakis, McIver and I am not counting the likes of Enns or Thorpe or even Mejia and Gonsalves who could pitch from the pen in a pinch.
