  1. Another hypothetical (and unfortunately not so) : It might not be a Kubel vs Parmelee choice. Kubel has made the team. It might be a Parmelee vs. Presley choice. And Gardenhire has played Parmelee at CF this Spring and has hinted that Kubel would play the OF as well. Got to DVR the game that he starts Kubel-Parmelee-Willingham at the OF.
  2. Simple answer (actually a question: ) If the Twins were to pass them both through waivers (I know they do not have to do for Kubel, but it is hypothetical) who gets claimed first? The Twins would be better with that guy (even just to trade him away...)
  3. Twins' 48th round pick in 2008 btw The team is acting within its prerogative. The player has no case. What's next? Challenging a trade? Holding out for a larger contract? This is baseball, with guaranteed contacts and rules governed by the CBA. That simple. And it is the only major sport with guaranteed contract and no salary cap. I think that the MLB players and first round picks like Springer who signed for decent $ have it pretty well... There are bigger fish to fry and that is with the rest of minor leaguers who make below the poverty level...
  4. It does, but this has nothing to do with who got cut today. Regardless who made the trip North from the 39 players left in Camp before today, this team would still look bad...
  5. All that Buxton proved this Spring Training is that he is over-matched playing against MLB- and AAA-level talent. Let's see how he does in AA and then we can talk about 2015. Unless he has an exceptional season there, I doubt that he gets to the majors before 2016.
  6. Totally. Especially for the ones of us who have been following them since they were drafted, got to talk to some of them in person. It is hard... Most of us would not care if most of the Minor League Free Agents they signed get released, but it is the players they drafted or signed as kids from international markets, that is hard to see go. That's part of the reason I did not want to write anything about it when I saw him pitch...
  7. I would have to say that it extends beyond mlb.com. Most beat writers are toying company line because if they do not, they lose out on "scoops" (i.e. ballclub staff go to others instead of them with events that are about to happen.) "Access" has a heavy price: Neutrality and the ability to say things as they are. Wonder why you do not see any main press outlet in the Cities e.g. criticizing Gardy & Co for the 99+96+96 and asking for some accountability from somebody for the last 3 years? Radio and TV broadcasters are even worse: They are Twins' employees...
  8. I can talk about Watts a bit. Was going to write about it when I saw him pitch, but I did not. Saw him pitch for a couple innings, I think Monday or Sunday, at Field Three. Not sure if you remember, but in the past he was easily sitting in mid 90s. His velocity was 89-91 and his delivery was really funky. He was not using his lower body at all (and that was probably the issue with the velo) and was throwing the ball in a Gary Wayne stiff back manner. Not sure exactly what was up there, but he just did not look good at all. This (horribly out of focus shot) is out of that game and might clarify what I mean with that stiff delivery...
  9. I would love to see a Willingham, Parmelee and Arcia or Kubel Outfield. I bet so would the Twins' pitchers...
  10. Kind of hard to answer that in one sentence. Before I went down there to watch them this spring, I was really hopeful that this team can be a .500 team. However, after I did watch them, I was very disappointing. You can read my prediction for this team here (and the reasons behind it.) The 2011 team was different, but this team has worse energy than both the 2012 and 2013 teams as far as Spring Training goes. And I cross-checked this with others who have watched the last few STs and there is agreement. I hope that I am wrong, but it might be another bad season....
  11. That's about right. Herrmann will likely make it because of his versatility and because he leads the existing camp in OPS. I see a 3 way battle between Kubel, Parmelee and Colabello, for one spot, with Colabello the likely winner (unless they buy the "proven veteran" thing with Kubel. Remember, Yesterday Eddie was a 'proven veteran' when the Twins traded a Hamburger for him, so Capps was a "proven closer".) I have a hard time seeing Diamond on the pen. He just cannot get lefties out. I think that at this point, Diamond, Tonkin, Fien, Thielbar and Matt Guerrier (another 'proven veteran') will be fighting for 2 spots.
  12. Actually, they will probably need a 5th starter if same series doubleheaders are popping up due to first game of the series cancellations...
  13. If you look at the lineup today, you will see the biggest issue with Suzuki batting second: Gardy will bat the catcher second, which means that Pinto will bat second as he is today.

  15. How about Plouffe at LF, Hicks at CF, Willingham platooning with Kubel at DH and random place holder (Deibinson Romero) at 3B? Just because the place holders at 3B are likely better than the ones at CF and Plouffe will not be a third baseman starting in 2015.
  16. Close but not cigar. Here are his career OBPs (and PAs) in different positions: Batting 1st 124 PA, .258 OBP Batting 2nd 223 PA, .336 OBP Batting 3rd 412 PA, .291 OBP Batting 4th 262 PA, .336 OBP Batting 5th 450 PA, .300 OBP Batting 6th 333 PA, .294 OBP Batting 7th 410 PA, .317 OBP Batting 8th 759 PA, .308 OBP Batting 9th 294 PA, .337 OBP One can argue that he should bat 9th (other than the leadoff, none of the others are significant based on the amount of PAs.) The one interesting thing is that he has bat all over the order in his career.
  17. Was that in his years as a manager down there?
  18. Scary that he has had a 10 year career with the big club
  19. I don't think it is evaluation per se, but lack of accountability. The Gomez trade was a mistake, as was the Hardy trade (not sure who Wilson is.) I would disagree that the Twins got nothing back from Span and Revere. Alex Meyer has top of the rotation stuff, he just needs another year or so. Were he in another team, like the Marlins or Astros, he would had been in the majors last season. But the Twins do not do that. I think that the Twins won that trade because aging below average hitting centerfielders (OPS+ 94 last season for Span) are a dime a dozen. Revere is slightly different story because he has a couple of crazy good skills (speed, contact and fielding) and crazy good energy, but he lacks on plate discipline, arm and power. Hard to tell whether he will be a starter or a back up in the majors. Worst-case scenario, and the Twins are not there yet, but they might be soon, May has the stuff to be a dominant closer. Could also be a #3 starter easily and that's why he is starting still.... Add a pitcher who had success but for some reason has lost it next year and needs to find it, and I think that the Revere trade is pretty close, if not at the Twins' advantage as well...
  20. I am actually higher on Hicks than most. I think that his ceiling is Torii Hunter/Carlos Gomez (and, yes, I am listing those two as very similar; the Twins blew that one...)
  21. IIRC he signed a MiLB contract with the Phillies. So he will likely play for my hometown team (IronPigs)
  22. Career .251/.300/.387 line. Sounds like the second coming of Clete Thomas (career .233/.311/.353 line)
  23. I thought it was Steil. My bad. Anyone has any idea who that is?

  25. So with Rantz still around, how do we expect this guy (and I am not talking about Rasmussen) to do his job?
