  1. I took this Tuesday (the day Phil Hughes was pitching there). In high def. Shows a lot of the reasons that some of us are a bit down on Goodrum. Video Here. Enjoy.
  2. Agreed, but my point was different a bit: You cannot use the same metric (Spring Training performance, in this case) to say that someone has not shown much, but cut the ones who have shown enough. It is inconsistent. Add the fact that players like Hicks have performed like Hall of Famers compared to Kubel and Bartlett without comment about the last 2, and ...
  3. Another thing I find interesting about this comment is this: Danny Santana hit .391/.462/.696 this Spring. He was cut. It just conflicts slightly with Antony's comment, unless he expected more...
  4. AJ, had the pleasure to meet your folks the other day when you were playing 3B at Field Two and hit against Phil Hughes and I think that you have an awesome support system and it is so obvious of how proud they are of you. Over at Field Three I had a change to talk with the mom of one of the Orioles' top prospects (played in the Rookie leagues last season and was invited to the MLB camp in ST and was cut early) and she said that when she talks to him he reminds him to be humble, keep his chin up and go out and do his best every day. I think that it is plenty of good advise for everyone. Thanks for posting this.
  5. Spring stats may be useless. But if Willingham and Plouffe (the Twins' power RH bats) have not hit any HRs yet (and sometimes against AAA and AA pitchers), I see this as a red flag. Unless the cement at the Hammond Stadium new boardwalk has not settled yet and is to blame. As far as the Hicks/Presley comparison by Antony goes, it is ridiculous. Presley has let at least 4 balls sail over his head, over slid second base twice when trying to steal, bounced throws to the cutoff man from the OF and has been heating meagerly. The only comparison that might stand is on the last of these 4 points and Hicks has been hitting much better than Presley as well.

  8. A couple things: These guys (esp. Buxton) did not really perform well this Spring while with the Twins. Buxton was a step above Bartlett with the stick and had a couple of mishaps on the field. Also, Meyer at some point needed to be stretched for the season. If he was sticking around to pitch an inning at a time as Gardenhire suggested, that would have not happened. Plus, I would not trust that Gardenhire is speaking the truth there...

  10. Seth, yes. The catching depth is encouraging. Grimes looked good behind the plate as well, yesterday. The thing with Swim, is that he just does not look much like a catcher to me (unlike the other guys I mentioned.) He is kind of small

  12. Sunday was Minnesota Day at Hammond Stadium, which apparently means that a whole bunch of people get early at the ballpark to tailgate at the parking lot and is a pain to find parking spots. I arrived just in time for the two intrasquad games[PRBREAK][/PRBREAK] (AAA vs AA) and (A+ vs A) at Fields number 2 and 3. Aaron Hicks was hitting for the AA team and Pedro Florimon was playing for the AAA team, so that is where I exclusively spent my time before I was headed to the ballpark for the Twins and Marlins game. Alex Meyer was pitching and he was practically unhittable and a strike out machine, other than a long home run by Mike Gonzalez who looks in shape this season and will likely split the 1B/DH duties with Kennys Vargas in New Britain. I am not going to give a scouting report on Meyer, it is unnecessary, but he was on top of his game and hitting his spots with ease. I have not noticed before, but he does this weird thing with his mouth when he pitches: http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3798/13202258975_13733a8555_z.jpg ~~~ Originally published at The Tenth Inning Stretch ~~~ Aaron Hicks did not play at the field but was the second batter in every inning for the AA squad and did nothing in 3 innings against Alex Meyer. However, when he was replaced in the fourth, Hicks hit a long home run in dead center off Yohan Pino. Pino was not quite as good as I remember him to be, his control was just not there. http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3692/13202410003_9f0ae157f5_z.jpg Speaking of not good, BJ Hermsen started for the AA team and he was, well, not good. It was amazing that he has been the Twins' minor league pitcher of the year in the past as well as having a spot on the 40-man roster. I am not sure what has happened to him, but it is not pretty. He was hit hard by every Rochester player, allowing multiple home runs and extra base hits. Even Pedro Florimon hit a triple off him in one plate appearance and struck out (a feat by itself because Hermsen struck out 3.7 AA hitters per 9 innings last season) in another. http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2791/13202269605_990e787851_z.jpg And if you are a major leaguer, this is how you go from the back fields to Hammond Stadium: http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2849/13202271055_90f257ba1d_z.jpg Some additional tidbits from the intrasquad game: Evan Bigley played CF for Rochester today. With Mastroianni back there tomorrow, I do not think that this will be a common sighting. Bigley was fine at the field and made a couple good catches and looked good at the plate as well. I think that this is a make or break season for him. This off-season the Twins picked up 28 year old CJ Ziegler, the Independent American Association MVP (.318/.408/.645 with 30 HRs and 99 RBI in 100 games,) hoping it will be Chris Colabello's second coming. Ziegler is listed at 6'5", 245 lbs, but he is a much bigger man. Think of a righty Jim Thome. It will be interesting to see how he does in Rochester http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3724/13203387384_3019744e17_z.jpg Cole Johnson came to relieve BJ Hermsen and I think that he might be a sleeper. Very lanky righty with easy delivery, throwing almost side arm and good movement. Not a mph guy, but good solid stuff and looks like he got a good feel for pitching. He struck out 11 per 9 innings last season in AA, so he might be doing something right. The 44th round pick from Notre Dame in 2011 has been flying under the radar so far, but he might be someone to pay attention to this season. Back at the Hammond Stadium the Twins hosted the Marlins, which resulted in a pitching matchup between a former Twins Ace http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2681/13202272775_1b17fb65c1_z.jpg and the current Twins' Ace. http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2820/13202408363_1285a2225c_z.jpg It was a pitching duel through five with each of the starters giving one run a piece and each of the starters topping out at 92 mph (which is quite a feat for Slowey.) Ricky Nolasco was very impressive in that he has a repertoire of 5 (or so) pitches and he is throwing them any time in the count. His change up (79-81) was particularly impressive today. He will be the Twins' opening day starter and I predict a great season for him. Both Jasons (Kubel and Bartlett) reached base today (a rarity for these guys) on walks. Despite Twins' fans rooting for them to make the team, I think that their best days are well behind them and that they are not major league caliber players at this point. Aaron Hicks came in for Alex Presley and had a nice double. At this point, I think that it is not even close between these two. In addition to Presley having an anemic bat this Spring and misjudging balls at the outfield, at one point in a single at mid-depth, he bounced the throw to the cutoff man. An arm reminiscent of Ben Revere. Speaking of feats, at some point Josh Willingham hit a strong liner that hugged the right field line. I was thinking triple all the way as soon as it left his bat, but he managed to get thrown out at second base. Unacceptable at pro ball. Maybe the thing in his back pocket was weighing him down... http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3794/13202593044_2a6c27d43f_z.jpg Monday the Twins are scheduled to play the Orioles in Sarasota and it will be a full day of minor league coverage from Fort Myers for me.
  13. Yes. Not Gunning, because there was a gun about 10 feet away (look at the pic and that's the gun I look at to tell speeds, too; that black thing in the stand) but he was timing every single pitch and time between pitches with a stopwatch. And only for those 2. AJ Achter, Matt Sumers, Matthew Hauser, Dakota Watts, Steven Gruven pitched as well, but he was uninterested in all of them.
  14. you can read the whole story (and see photographic evidence) here, but the story in a few bullet points goes like this: The Twins were about to travel to Sarasota to play the Orioles with Kevin Correia slated to be the starter Even before the game was called off Kevin Correia started for the AAA game in the Twins intrasquad game at Fort Myers There was a Tampa Bay Rays scout who was scouting both Correia and May (who pitched for the AA team in the intrasquad game) and the Rays right now are at 2+2+? starters solidified. Pretty sure that Correia (and May) would be an improvement of what the Rays can trot right now at the 5 spot, but it will be an interesting thing to watch the next couple weeks...
  15. Re: Berrios. He grew 2 inches easily and he gained muscle as well. Remember, he is still a teenager (19.) Plenty of room to grow. Some kids keep growing (vertically I mean) until they are 22-23. Last year he was listed at 6'0" (generously). I walked by him yesterday when he was not pitching when standing with the other kids watching the minor league game and he looks 6'2"ish. Re: Gonsalves and his fastball. Gonsalves (and not sure if you can tell from that picture) is really thin and has very long appendages and he throws them all over during his delivery. So what a hitter is seeing is legs and arms and then that fastball drops around knee low with decent movement and it looks like a bullet with that delivery. This is a guy who can make a living with a low 90s FB. If I remember correctly, Frankie V's fastball was about that level but his secondary stuff complemented it and made it look faster. I think that this is the case with Gonsalves as well. And, yes, he has a lot of room to grow. Another thing I forgot to mention in these reports (just too many stimuli and thoughts around here and when you sit back in the hotel to write for half to one hour, things get passed by...) I did talk about Harrison's transformation. I did not see him pitch (just drills), but his co-supplementary round pick, Hudson Boyd, also looks really good. Harrison never had a weight issue. He had an agility/speed issue. Boyd did have a weight issue. He looks fit now. I hope that translates into numbers soon...
  16. Buxton will likely not be ready for the majors in the beginning of 2015. I think that he might be a September call up. Still has issues making contract with breaking balls. He needs to solve those to be MLB-ready.
  17. Do you mean BA with RISP?
  18. The OP said "hitters" Otherwise a "win" for a pitcher (any pitcher) is the single most meaningless stat, because pitchers cannot win a game (unless they are in the NL and hit.) The best a pitcher can do is to avoid runs to score. Offense wins games.
  19. Second most over-rated. Most over-rated is Game Winning RBI

  21. Florimon is not elite, unless by "elite" you mean "above average". With a whole bunch of different metrics he is from 4th-15th SS in the league. For me "elite" is an all time equation. Ozzie Smith was elite. As far as why Gardenhire is starting Florimon if not elite, this is because it is his MO. Punto, Buscher, Tolbert, Butera et al. were not elite by any means. Actually Punto is a pretty good defensive comparable at SS for Florimon, other than the high line drive ball. I always have been high on Escobar and I think that he will have a great season this season. Little known fact: SS is his natural and best position and he won the VWL gold glove last winter. Also, he is not a good third baseman by any means. He is better than Plouffe, but this does not mean that he is good (see the above link for metrics and defensive comparisons with Florimon, if you care.) Would a contender stand to have Florimon's bat at SS? If not, the Twins should not either.

  23. Depends how you define "success" I guess And under .700 OPS is not successful at any level. His career numbers in the majors are bit different that what you mention: vs RHP .224/.286/.347 (441 PA) & vs LHP .204/.256/.259 (165 PA) Other than the SLG, which is significant different, the others are likely within the standard deviation of the sample size which is smallish as a RHB. As far as his defense goes, here is his ranking with a few metrics (in the MLB and in the AL) Fangraphs Def: 14th (6th in the AL) UZR/150: 18th (11th in the AL) RZR: 8th (1st in the AL) I am not a huge fan. I really want to see the Twins give Escobar a change for the starting job because he is better with the stick and at least close (if not better) with the glove.
  24. Did you all see that one bouncer to the cutoff man from short center by Presley earlier in the game today? Revere-like arm...
  25. Yeah. The was I see it, as far as position players go, subtract Kubel, add Pinto (as a 50-50 starter with Suzuki) and this is the roster, with the DH being a rotation between Parmelee/Colabello/Herrmann/Arcia/Willingham, Herrmann having a utility role and giving Gardy his beloved third catcher. Not sure how pitching will play out. I expect trades. I also might not be surprised if Matty Guerrier makes the team. He pitched well in his first outing the other day. Still need another week or so to play out there.
