  1. Can't disagree with much. Totally agree with the bunting situation, but the manager is the problem there. OId.Skool. Where I disagree, is placing Duffey and Berrios on the same boat. Berrios is 3 years younger. He needs patience. Duffey, for the second season in a row, has proven that he is not good the second time + around an order, and he does not have the stuff nor the endurance to be a starter. I see him as a cornerstone in the Twins' pen, along with his co-closer in College. Add Burdi to the mix next season, and you might have a great 3-headed monster at the end of the Twins' pen. But.Starter.He.Ain't.
  2. AL fWAR: Trout 8.6 Betts 7.1 Donaldson 6.8 Altuve 6.6 Machado 6.3 Dozier 6.1 This is Trout's to lose, unless the majority of the voters would be of the opinion that an MVP should have helped lead his team to the post-season or at least be in a competitive team. If that is the case it is Bett's award.
  3. Don't be so sure about that... Vielma cannot hit a volleyball with a bat and Gordon's OPS in the same stop at the same age is 60 (A+), 120 (A), and 201 (Rk+) points lower than Polanco's, plus his fielding percentage this season (.952) is worse than Polanco's (and so is Vielma's, .954) I see no reason that Gordon will be a better player than Polanco, if he makes it to the majors, and Vielma's ceiling is Florimon.
  4. SSS. Give the kid the off-season and the entire Spring Training to play and prep as a shortstop and I suspect that he will be much better next season. Kepler has a .971 fielding percentage, which is worse for a RF than Polanco's .959 is for a SS. He also has a negative UZR (even though UZR is useless in both sample sizes.) Any concerns there? The bottom line is that both players are young enough to improve and unless you play them there, they will not improve.
  5. Any suspension for the GM is weak. They got to take away draft picks and/or the ability to sign IFAs plus fine them an amount that they will feel (let's say $10M minimum) Anything else is a slap on the wrist.
  6. Hope that 2 off that list, but for sure one, is not a Twins' player next year...
  7. Certainly, but Buxton will be to Sano and Polanco what Gaetti was to Puckett and Hrbek. Thus term "Buxton era" is equivalent to that of "Gaetti era".
  8. Family, location, location, location, family Frankly, I don't know many non-natives who are not dreading Minnesota winters. And if someone has Junior High/High School age kids, a job in Toronto (less than 1hr flight from Boston where the family is,) is much more appealing that a job in Minneapolis, esp. if one does not have any emotional ties with the team...
  9. Here are a few non-Twins scouting reports on Meyer at the time of the trade or thereabouts, with quotes from there: Number 1: "He has the makings of a true top-of-the-rotation starter." Number 2: "his ceiling is phenomenal and he has all of the tools to develop in to a number-one starter in the MLB. He's isn't a projection-only guy either, backing up his top prospect status with a lights out performance last year." Number 3: "If his shoulder holds up he could become a No. 1 or 2 starter in the Twins rotation and has a significantly higher ceiling than anyone currently found on the big league staff." Number 4: "looks the part of a potential front-of-the-rotation piece, and we could see him turn up in the Twin Cities in the second half" Number 5: "If you were to create a starting pitcher from scratch it might look something like Meyer: 6-foot-9, 220 pounds, above-average to plus strikeout potential, solid or better control, and fantastic groundball rates. If he can avoid injury, Meyer could develop into a legitimate frontline starting pitcher" Not sure where you got your information...
  10. Upset? Not a matter of being upset or not. It is a matter of preparing different ways. And some people will break down if they prepare the wrong way. May seems to be that type
  11. To make matters worse, here is the list of the players who made starts for the Twins that season: Kevin Correia Mike Pelfrey Scott Diamond Sam Deduno Pedro Hernandez Andrew Albers Liam Hendrinks Cole DeVries ------ Kyle Gibson Other than Gibson, arguably Worley was the best of the list
  12. 2016 second basemen: WAR Jose Altuve 6.7 Brian Dozier 5.9 Daniel Murphy 5.5 Dustin Pedroia 5.4 Robinson Cano 5.1 wRC+ Murphy 158 Altuve 154 Matt Carpenter 142 Dozier 142 Cano 135 wOBA Murphy .411 Altuve .398 DJ LeMahieu .389 Dozier .386 Carpenter .384 OPS Murphy .990 Altuve .950 Dozier .929 Carpenter .910 LeMahieu .905 Depending on whether someone thinks that defense matters in awarding silver sluggers or not, it should be either Murphy (defense does not matter) or Altuve (defense matters.) My belief is that SS is complementary to GG, so defense does not matter, and Murphy should get it (unless those numbers change by the end of the season.) Dozier a solid third.
  13. Other than the part that in the off-season they told him to prep as a starter to try to get a job out of ST, and the part that used him as a starter in ST, until they told him to move to the pen. So in real time the past 2 seasons, it has been half starting, half relieving...
  14. Not exactly: Alan Busenitz and whatever the Pirates paid the Twins to purchase Worley's contract. And May will be fine. They just need to quit jerking him around
  15. I really do not understand how anyone could compare Kemper at a corner OF potistion to Polanco (who is also younger than Kemper) at SS and think that Kemper is a better player or deserves to be part of the Twins' future more than Kemper. Look at the data. As far as the original questions goes, at this point I would say: Sano, Polanco, Buxton, Kepler, Vargas (btw, what else does this guy need to do at the MLB-level to get any respect? And he is Duffey's and Chargois's age) with Berrios, Gonsalves, and May on the cusp and needing to prove more. Other than first 3, I would have no untouchables (if Kemper was a centerfielder, catcher, or middle infielder, I'd add him to that list, but corner OF is easier to find.)
  16. The scariest part about that writeup was the last sentence: "Rob Antony, the Twins’ interim GM, is considered a candidate as well." Picollo comes from the Braves' organization, he recently joined the Royals.
  17. He is cherry picking. Forgot to mention that Zobrist was also traded for Sean Manea plus a guy. And Dozier has more value than Zobrist had then. I'd take Manea plus another pitching prospect at that level for Dozier in a heartbeat.
  18. I am not convinced that Gordon is better than Polanco at SS at this point. Definitely Polanco's bat has been better at the same stops at the same age...
  19. Jeff Kent (traded for David Cone) begs to differ. And the Twins have traded a couple of different second basemen for a good haul. Heck, Nunez brought back a possible #4 starter, shouldn't Dozier bring more? And they can always package someone like Stewart to sweeten the deal.
  20. Here is the composition of the current Cardinal Starters: Jaime Garcia - Drafted 2005, 22nd Round Michael Wacha - Drafted 2012, 1st Round (in the majors 2013) Luke Weaver - Drafted 2014, 1st Round (in he majors 2016) Lance Lynn (60 day DL) - Drafted 2008, 1st Round Mike Leake - Free Agent 2015 (5Y/$80M - Cinci's 1st Round pick) Carlos Martinez - Minor League FA 2010 Adam Wainwright - Traded for JD Drew in his prime - Atlanta's 1st Round pick So. They have 3 recent 1st round draft picks, they got good scouting to get younger pitchers like Martinez as FAs and are not afraid to sign long term contracts or to trade their stars in their decline to get young rising pitching starts I'd love it if the Twins do the same...
  21. I hope they rebuild. A veteran FA SS will not allow Polanco to get enough reps at SS and see whether he can play that position long term. Also rebuilding teams need veteran SSs as much as they need proven closers... They don't. The whole idea of rebuilding is to create a core of players that will reach their primes together so the team will be competitive until the next rebuild. The Twins' current/future core is at ages 22-25. So much outside that age range does not make sense. Figure out what you have and when they get closer to contending, you then can close holes with veterans (like MacPhail did in '87 for example,) but getting players at or past their primes makes zero sense at this point
  22. Plouffe is the poster boy of non-tendering (along with Milone and Santiago...)
  23. How about just a sentence (and a bit) : These are the same people who have been making personnel decisions the last 20-some years around here; do you really think that there is a reason or a rhyme in those decisions? (see: Sano, Miguel, rightfielder)
  24. 1B Vargas 2B Dozier/Beresford/Escobar SS Polanco 3B Sano
  25. Anesthesia was ok at that time period. The principles of infection (and cleanliness) were not. And pain management was ok too.
