  1. No, it's (often recklessly) endangering the lives of those in the vehicle with the person speeding and everyone else on the road at the same time. Much more concerning in my opinion.
  2. No, not for certain. Many things classified as PEDs are simply used for healing and recovery. Heck, two drugs my father used after a knee replacement would be illegal in MLB.
  3. I think you'd be disturbed how many kids show up to college using something to enhance performance. A coach in ACC baseball estimated to me that it was 40-50% that self reported using within their high school time, and it makes sense with 25 showcase games per year, an entire showcase circuit in the summer and winter invite tourneys where you can really get pro eyes on you, high school kids know a shot at the pros is literally gained or lost in every game.
  4. By far the majority of PEDs getting players suspended right now are things that are used to assist in healing and recovery, so helping a player get back onto the field, which is exactly what greenies did. Thrylos can call for the feds to arrest them all, but then the government would be playing a lot of baseball players who have been taking substances completely legal in the United States but banned in MLB as a PED.
  5. And I wrote to John McCain at that time to ask him why baseball was his target. High school steroid/PED use has actually gone down significantly since the 1980s, when the rush of available steroids hit the GNC market unregulated at the time and sometimes promoted by a favorite NFL player. The Cardinals employed Dexter Manley, a known steroid user who had once stated that kids using steroids because they saw him doing it was something along the lines of "part of the consequence of being famous and good", while they were in Arizona, yet McCain oddly never pushed hard on the welfare of children when Manley walked into the Cardinals. In fact, there were pictures of the two of them together circulated around the time of the first congressional hearings that I cannot find on a quick Google Image search, but he even posed for a pic with Manley at one point and praised his redemption story (Manley after his career admitted that he never stopped using steroids during his career, only stopping the cocaine that got him suspended at one point).
  6. Always, I work with youth ministry at my church and frequently challenge youth to bring me an artist style and I'll associate a Christian artist that has similar style. Not saying by any means same quality, but if you get rules like that thrown at you, it helps some at least. Feel free to PM me, and we could go back and forth to find groups that fit you. On the other hand, I'll echo the poster from the great north in that exposure to a breadth of music talent is always good. I can listen to rap or "screamo" stuff and appreciate the talent needed to accomplish the music without the lyrics even affecting me. I don't become a different person based on the lyrics I'm listening to for sure. I've told folks when I write stuff, I place lyrics over a tune most frequently, and even when the lyrics come first, I can write a lyric sheet in a sitting of minutes and spend a number of days working just on the melody, so I'm always way more focused on the music of a piece, not the words. I feel for ya.
  7. For someone who is allergic to the smoke of marijuana and a number of other grasses, this was the worst day to attempt to walk the U of M.
  8. Sugar and Pelotero are both great movies as well.
  9. In baseball, there are (and certainly have been) many great names. I thought it'd be fun to have a running thread with great baseball names past and present. I'm going to start with one of each. I'll go very recent and choose one from last season's draft class, an outfielder from the Atlanta, Georgia area that went to the University of North Carolina, Oakland Athletics 4th round selection in the 2015 draft, Skye Bolt. I'd go easy on some of the ones that you know will find their way onto this post right away for a classic name, but instead, I thought I'd dip a little farther. I found a catcher/outfielder from 1881-1884 who carried the nickname "Old Iron Hands", so you know he wasn't in the league for his defense, yet his career slash was a paltry .184/.194/.228, which is why he only lasted four seasons, I'm sure, playing for four teams in those four seasons. His known name was Sleeper Sullivan, though his given name was a patriotic Thomas Jefferson Sullivan, interesting with his Irish birthplace.
  10. For Love of the Game was my go-to date movie. Any woman who could appreciate both the romance of the relationship and the game in that movie would be a woman that had a future with me. My wife passed with flying colors. I love some of the old movies like Pride of the Yankees and Fear Strikes Out, but some of the best baseball stories out there would be Bang the Drum Slowly and Long Gone, and you can never be bored with The Bingo Long Travelling All-Stars
  11. In talking with a big NBA fan friend of mine from near Atlanta, he discussed the TWolves job with me as we were discussing college coaching openings. His statement was that the Timberwolves job is probably the most desirable job in the league right now, and he does writing for the FanSided Atlanta site with some personal connections to the Hawks, so I know he's fairly sourced in their front office. I was taken back by that comment a bit, but it'd be nice to have a coaching job in Minnesota be a first choice for once...
  12. Much rejoicing in Mudville as the Braves have won a game...
  13. So, here's something impressive to think about... Steph Curry made 400 3-point baskets in the regular season this year. This broke his own record that he set the previous season of less than 300. It was an increase in 141% of the previous record. For a baseball comparison, someone breaking the single season home run record would hit 103 home runs in a season. Someone would steal 194 bases. A closer would need to save 87 games. A starter would have to strike out 18.9 batters per 9 innings. Those would all be 141% improvements on the current records. Crazy to consider.
  14. I get to cover the minor leagues. They're fun. The Braves have one of the deepest minor league systems in the game, so I have pleasant things to watch at least.
  15. This article made me so happy... http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/15198405/minnesota-timberwolves-opening-search-head-coach
  16. Deadspin was not a fan of this article at all...
  17. Will Smith, 34, former defensive end for the New Orleans Saints. Tragic and senseless death.
  18. I also think it's more fun to watch when Andrelton Simmons is in the game, and if a rule like this keeps him more safe in the field, then it adds to the fun of the game. I personally don't find DH "fun", so there is still debate on that rule 40+ years later, which is the reason why it hasn't been adopted across the entire league.
  19. See, this is the crowd that confuses me the most. At least the red arses on the Braves boards I'm part of that are "new rule bad" "DH bad" "change bad" are at least consistent. I just don't get anyone claiming tradition and "ruining" the game and then in the next breath discussing their preference for the designated hitter. The DH was a huge, monstrously big step down the path of major changes in the game, so you can't pick and choose which ones you like. The game made a major choice and used pitcher safety as a primary reason for it (and still utilizes pitcher safety as a reason to implement the DH in both leagues), so other rules intended to benefit player safety are just further trips down that rabbit hole. You cannot have it both ways.
  20. Cardinals hit 3 pinch hit home runs off of the Braves tonight. Never been done before in major league history.
  21. Basically, this is why people ever thought the Tampa Bay Rays were good at developing players. Once they were no longer picking in the top half of the draft, their ability to draft and develop future major leaguers has been absolutely putrid.
  22. I would have to search for it, and I'm still at work, so that's not going on at the moment, but a study was done that showed that a surprisingly small number of those international signees appeared on team top 10 rankings or moved very quickly in the system.
  23. The Braves are AJ Pierzynski's defense away from being 2-0 instead of 0-2 against the high and mighty Washington Nationals.
  24. I'm very much planning on housework this evening. Our "date night" will be spent prepping the house for our final foster inspection next week!
  25. And people say there's only steroids that could turn baseball players into power hitters...
