  1. DING DING DING! And Johan had a long term contract in place before they accepted the trade AND Johan was the best pitcher in all of baseball. The Twins also had little leverage because of Johan's no trade clause. The Mets were bidding against themselves. I'm not sure that JJ has the same kind of leverage that Johan had, so I'm not sure that the Marlins will be forced to take a mediocre package.
  2. Revere clearly fell off late in the season; I'm not willing to say whether that was returning to the mean, a conditioning issue, or playing on a losing club. I imagine Revere played more this season than he has any other season previously. Not making excuses, but looking at context. While Span might out produce Revere in any number of measurable ways, his healthy issues are also hard to discount. With Hicks (and Benson, and Buxton, and Kepler) in the wings, I hope the Twins "roll the dice": trading Span and going with Revere in CF to open 2013.
  3. Given his health history, it's equally likely he has no value at the deadline. You're right there is injury risk, but maybe some due diligence would go along way to tipping the scales. (In any case, JJ has pitched at least 180IP three of four seasons*). In theory, it's a risk I'm willing to take given the payroll coming off the books, and the boom/bust nature of 2013. Again, I'd hold off trying to resign the guy until midseason or even offseason 2013. *Dave beat me to the point /hattip
  4. I imagine they are already under contract, hence the "reassignment."
  5. Here's an update from the strib. fyi
  6. Bingo. I do not understand the people who howl that Bill Smith is still in the organization. It's not an intelligent approach to managing an organization. If you have a guy like Smith who, by all accounts, was a quite capable suit-and-tie type of guy, you don't can him because he was a failure as a general manager. You wash your hands of the situation by sitting him down, explaining your issues with his performance, and put him back into the position at which he excelled. It's smart management. You don't throw a guy out on his ass because you promoted him beyond his own capabilities, you blame yourself for not properly evaluating talent and make the most of a bad situation by re-inserting that person back into a role where he can perform again. It's common ****ing sense. I often wonder if half the people around here have even worked in a real business where decisions take longer than three seconds to make and you don't ****can everybody in the office the first time they screw up. That's not how anyone runs a successful organization in any field. Good people are hard to find and the Twins may stick with guys a little too long but that's certainly better than the opposite approach. Well said.
  7. I'm also surprised by Hicks absence, given his pedigree and his actual production at AA. Sickels didn't respond to questions about him in the comments, but he must have legitimate reasons for leaving him off.
  8. Josh Johnson is precisely the kind of player the Twins should target in Gardy's lame duck year, given his JJ's one year contract. I'd certainly start discussion on extension with Johnson in the offseason if he acquired, but he'd be a valuable trade asset at the deadline, along with Willingham and Morneau if the team struggles. I'm not sure the Marlins would want major league level talent, and their asking price might be too high in the offseason--given that JJ could increase his trade value and be cheaper at the deadline. Personally, I'd be willing to overpay to get the guy this offseason, just because of the flexibility the Twins would have whether they win or lose.
  9. Here's a nice resource for 2013 prospect lists, for those interested: http://www.fantasyrundown.com/2013_MLB_Prospects.html
  10. Oh, we need more Joe Mauer's. Well, there you go.
  11. You're overreacting, turbo. From the PP:
  12. No, that's the info we already know. Look, you admit you are guessing. You don't know what happened and what people were told and for what reasons. This is both patronizing and absurd. Whiter integrity, indeed? You're framing the situation in your preferred narrative before you necessarily know the details, and then you're stridently thumping your chest about it. Ugh.
  13. You can watch the Press Conference on star tribune. TR clearly says Varva and Ulger were reassigned. However, he goes on to say that they are in a the market for a Bullpen Coach, a Hitting Coach, and a Bench Coach. So are we to understand that Varva and Ulger will also man 1B and 3B coaching positions? And does that mean Glynn to BC, Bruno to HC and Cueller to BPC? I guess it makes sense, but the Twins mishandled the information poorly yesterday...
  14. It looks like it's Bollinger's words. He's not quoting Ryan. Whether they are only three hires today, doesn't necessarily mean Ulger and Varva are still on the ML staff (which would be weird given what information we actually have). But we'll see, if this turns out to be true, poor publicity from the Twins. Given that Varva himself thought he was fired, "Whatever happens, I've given it everything I've got," Vavra said, "and I'm proud of that." (PP quote).
  15. Are you suggesting Varva becomes Bench Coach and Ulger becomes 1b Coach or something? Because why would the team publicly announce they had been reassigned to infield and outfield instruction?
  16. 365 days? Some of these guys were talking about it after 6 months....or less, very reasonable. I just can't understand how some people think. I guess people forgot how good Terry Ryan was in his first stint as GM. You got to have patience with this. I see you are new here. Welcome. To help you out, you need to know this site has two types of people: - People who believe that the Twins need to fire everybody, trade everybody, and spend tons of money on FA - Me and 11 other people who don't believe in kneejerk reactions. Best of luck! It's more like there are eleven people calling for the heads of management and the majority are pretty reasonable. The knee-jerkers just whine the loudest; which is a problem on message boards of all types.
  17. These are substantial changes. I wonder how the Twins offseason plan shapes up given that Gardy and Andy are one year deals.
  18. LEN3 says Ulger is out too.http://www.startribune.com/sports/twins/blogs/172663381.html
  19. This makes sense.
  20. Romney was more poised, brief, and exacting, while Obama appeared frustrated, wonkish and rambly. I think Obama came in not wanting to make mistakes nor change the dynamics of the race--in that point, the President perhaps succeeded, but was it worth it looking more meek among the two? I do think Obama got the best zinger; "Romeny's new tax plan: Nevermind." Romeny still strikes me, even in winning the debate, as an empty suit. He didn't clarify any of his ideas for me, he muddled them and even retracted positions that he taken before. Maybe he wins the debate by offering adamant abstractions, but I'm not sure that moves the electorate.
  21. Why stop at 115? I bet they lose at least 120 without him, maybe even 125. I suspect that you are not a friend of hyperbole... I suspect that you are not a friend to be taken seriously...
  22. The millions weren't worth the humiliation to play in the minor leagues. He'll get paid similarly in Japan. It works out nice for the Twins, but I wouldn't call the move by Nishi classy...
  23. Thanks for the report, Bob. It's not like anyone is interested in the big league club, so any minuscule hope we can find in videos or pics would probably save us from our self-formed nooses. BTW, reports like this are blog worthy.
