  2. By the way, the Rays are the better trading partner, as they are rumored to be shopping both Shields and Hellickson. They also have Jennings, who can both play CF and bat leadoff if they believe he will develop. So I'm not sure if TB is really better trading partners.
  3. The fact that Upton was an FA (along w Bourn) hurt Span's trade value. That Upton signed with a potential Span suitor was always a given! Another way to look at it is that those other teams in search of a CFer have fewer options. Span's value is at the very least nebulous.
  4. Ryan Braun. Melky Cabrera.
  5. There's gotta be alot of day drinking or other illicit behavior going on to make this at all endurable.
  6. If Liriano hadn't already been a Twin, he'd be exactly the kind of pitcher we'd want them to target. Go figure.
  7. This is a preemptive lecture. Let's see what they actually do before equating the withholding of judgment with coping mechanisms. Again, I don't necessarily have faith that the Twins will sign quality pitching, but I'm not going to use Scott freaking Feldman as the soapbox for that argument.
  8. My sense is this: Brad Radke ruined the Twins. At one time there was probably value in soft-tossing, control, durable pitchers. There's a Moneyball aspect at work, perhaps--in that the Twins valued pitchers who limited walks, while the rest of the league, perhaps, undervalued them. It's probably true that Radke was largely undervalued during his career. I think where things began to break down for the Twins, was the notion that soft-tossing, control pitchers will stay healthier, or necessarily have better, more coachable attitudes. Moreover, that the Twins sense that they could draft and develop such pitchers was obviously overstated, and so was their capacity to milk the free agency or waiver wires for such pitchers. Let's hope that's changed. I think our most recent draft is an example of that. Having pitchers like Gibson, Baker, Wimmers, Blackburn are assets only if their are combined with lots of other pitchers with a different skill sets.
  9. Jeeze! You guys are so mean! We should champion all voices, and promote the posting of threads like these. Furthermore, it's far too much to demand that people utilize google (or some similarly esoteric search engine) to find out more about prospects.
  10. Yeah, Bee Chem is a chump. But the rule is ridiculous in that it only punishes the noble (or the lazy). If the rule was enforceable, I might feel differently, but there's little gained from having a trading freeze, other than giving people a sure-thing break, which the league should be under no obligation to give.
  11. I hope this undercuts the notion of bargain deals on pitching--that the Twins could obtain quality arms on the cheap. Considering we'll have to overpay* for pitching. We might as well go big, and overpay for top of the line pitching like Marcum, Haren or Grienke. Wishful thinking, but jesus I can hope.
  12. The longer the Rays wait, the more inquires goto Longoria's agent, the more unlikely he is to sign that career length deal. I do agree that the deal is overwrought, but that's what it takes to sign a superstar to a longterm deal (all superstars are overpaid). Again, how much more cheaply could Mauer's longterm deal have been if we'd have signed him earlier on. Mauer, like Longoria, is a franchise player, and it's a given that the home team will overpay, as other teams will overpay MORE. It's a no win situation, but I think the Rays are playing it right here. And I wish the Twins had premonition to do the same with Mauer.
  13. He came cheaper than Mauer. This is merely an extension of his current deal. If they had waited, the Rays would have less and less leverage to get this deal done. The Rays are in the best position to judge his potential for drop off (things like health, work ethic, attitude, etc.). The Twins would have been served doing a deal like this with Mauer, rather than waiting until his contract year. Imagine if the Twins had extended Mauer before his MVP season...
  14. The potential for awesomeness doesn't equate to immediate awesomeness. So yet another high draft pick we'll wait 5 of more years for...and everyone seems okay with that. Five years? Three to four for a highschooler is completely normal, dude.
  15. Neil Walker is Pittsburg born; I can't see them trading him. As far as a team life coach, I prefer Frank TJ Mackey.
  16. The potential for awesomeness doesn't equate to immediate awesomeness.
  17. No reason to hurry this guy. New Britain next year seems like a total reach.
  18. Complaining about the Doumit contract seems not only a misappraisal but petty. That Doumit would have fetched anything worthwhile in a trade is ludicrous. Doumit's value at 3.5 mil is a nonbrainer for any team. For a team with the fragility of Mauer and Morneau, the value to the Twins is even more. C'mon man.
  19. Personally I've always thought the quirky parts of evolution's mechanisms were an intriguing case for intelligent design. This is exactly what I'm trying to say. It isn't hard to poke holes in the theory. The amount of luck that would go into the simplist life form arising from non-life makes winning the powerball every year for the next decade look easy. You misunderstand evolution. While it's lucky that a gene mutates into something useful, it's not luck that makes that gene get passed on (hence the similarity in cellular biology of all life). This is also why we see similar genetic features in disparate populations--because the trial-error of genomes sometimes reach the same useful mutations, and it's the useful ones that survive millions of years out. What's ironic, diehard, is that your financial philosophy seems akin to social darwinism--it's just the biological process that bothers you, not the social and economic one?
  20. Only if Hamilton goes back to the infield. And that's a lot to give up for the Reds, IMO.
  21. I'm not surprised by the amount, but the length.
  22. If he was free, sure. But he's not. At three years and twenty-five million, God no.
  23. What's funny is the Twins would have been criticized if they had made this deal, as well.
  24. I'm fairly certain that the field of gynecology contributes nothing to the evolution vs. creation debate, and if being skeptical of evolution defies common sense, then I suspect you haven't really studied the theory much. It isn't hard to poke holes in any of these theories (creation or evolution), and you don't need to visition the Sagan Institute or the ICR to do so. While the exact mechanisms of evolution are under debate, the notion that human life arose from biological precursors is not. That evolution is debunked because it is a 'theory' is about as sound as suggesting that reality might be some illusion because well, maybe it could be. Seriously.
