  1. I suppose we only look at his failures because those six division wins in nine years don't support your point. If you insist on looking at the whole record at least concede the parts that don't fit your preferred conclusion. Anyone can cherry pick the past.
  2. Dude. Again, what would we have TR do - two bullpen arms, and (a veteran) centerfielder. That doesn't prevent Molitor from putting Jepsen out there too long, or keep the Twins from striking out at record pace. We were looking to add a few parts, not reconstruct the roster. The team looks listless and undisciplined; I know you hate TR, so you can go ahead and blame him, but for my part there's a problem connecting TR's failure in getting bullpen and outfield help to the actual failures on the field. THat's not giving TR a pass, it's assessing with whom the failure most lies.
  3. Nunez, the guy everyone wanted TR to non-tender? Berrios wasn't even on the team last year. Duffey is duplicating his performance. May is duplicating his performance. Tonkin and Nolasco are improved. And TR picked Abad off the scrap heap (can't give him credit for it, now can we). So we've named seven players on a 25 man roster (and really counting the one's we've already let go, that's out of like 30 guys or so), most of whom are pitchers. Defend Molitor, what is he doing to keep his job. Would two more bullpen arms and centerfielder make Molitor look like a good manager? I don't think so.
  4. But we're not average, and we have to stop thinking about things blowing up from every direction as some kind of bad fortune. It's systemic. Every player from last year (beyond Mauer) is under performing. The team didn't look ready to start the season. They are undisciplined on the field, in the batters box, and on the base paths. If TR had gotten two more bullpen arms, Jepsen would still probably be Molitor's second guy, and we get a similar outcome. And if everything's going well that means Buxton hits and Jepsen is playing well, we can't pick and choose some alternative rosy picture and use that to figure out who to blame.
  5. Anyone. Tonkin. If the pitcher can't get any thing over but one pitch, you pull him, any pitcher that can get more than one pitch over the plate would have been better than Jepsen. Right, had Terry Ryan spent 30 million on the bullpen this team would be winning! For all the criticisms we can throw at the Front Office, had they done what we wanted (a CFer, bullpen help) this team would still have an atrocious record. Every player outside of Park, Mauer, and maybe Arcia is under performing, that's not roster construction problems...
  6. I'm sick of Molitor letting Jepsen (and others) work through their troubles. May is clearly the better late inning reliever. As soon as the Rickert (sp?) doubled, Molitor needed to pull Jepsen; it was clear Jepsen was having trouble getting anything over. This team is miserable to watch; they are listless and guided by risk-aversion. I think the coaching is more to blame than the roster construction. Cuddyer for manager? Hunter for benchcoach?
  7. Cute? Just stop with that. It's rude. No one's congratulating the Twins. Some of us are noting that we're happy they are addressing this mess by making moves (DFA/waiving four pitchers without regard to cost) they have been prohibitive of making in the past. I can like that they DFA'd someone, and still criticize them for who they'll bring up (Mastro), as they put themselves in a crap position with veteran outfielders. This need for you to police any vaguely positive comments, and say well, no, the Twins are still bad and stupid, and you shouldn't comment on anything other than how bad and stupid they are is...well weird. (Can't I just say: "this is the right move, good" without receiving condescending replies with how horrible the Twins are?).
  8. A lot of the old biblical stories are about obedience to god and his believers and the privileges of reverence. Not all religious parables are about morality per se; they often take the form of very practical concerns such as maintaining their ranks, by demonstrating what happens to those who don't believe and the protections for those who do believe. Would an all knowing God really need to test the faith of people? No, but if people believe that they must prove up their faith or face God's wrath, they become a lot more invested in that faith. I mean it's really jarring the nature of the old testament vis-a-vis Jesus' actual teachings....
  9. No one is excited about Mastro, (or Centeno), I too wish there were better options in the minor league, but I am hyped we won't have a 32-man bullpen and no bench players. The same roster mismanagement would have been sending Rosario/Berrios down, and not waiving Fien or Milone or DFAing Graham and ORourke. Things are bad, but the traditional Twins approach would be worse (I don't know why saying this is even controversial).
  10. Well, right. But hind-sight criticism doesn't hold much sway to me. The outrage at offering Milone and Fien arb was relatively muted at the time, and has only become emboldened with hindsight, not with forethought. Overall? Heck no, I'm not impressed. They really screwed the pooch on the bullpen construction and getting the bats ready for the season. Although I am glad they are being bold in changing that and giving opportunities to some often-protected prospects, I'm as disappointed with the results on the field as anyone. I just don't think we need people putting everything the Twins do in context of how bad they've played. I can be glad Berrios is in the rotation without someone smearing the Twins losses in my face...
  11. I was responding to Levi's post, specifically (so take it within that context) - not insinuating this is a housecleaning; however, these moves combined with waiving Fien and Milone demonstrate a change for how the Twins go about business. When's the last time they waived/dfa'd four pitchers in two days?
  12. Look, everyone can keep slapping each other on the back about how bad the Twins are, but there's nothing ridiculous about noting that the Twins have changed the way they go about handling the roster (and ineffective players), and being happy about those limited moves, even though the roster situation the Twins find themselves is of their own making. This isn't finding some silver lining, this is a change in the way the Twins usually go about things. Yes, everyone, the situation could be worse, the Twins could keep throwing ineffective players out there as they've tended to do in the past. But the "I'm so right about how bad things are" crowd seems to really appreciate your incendiary analogies! So like Bravo.
  13. I don't see it as panic so much as not letting prior-investment and sentimentality get in the way of the constructing the best roster. In years past, it took the Twins far too long to make these kind of moves -- giving too much rope for undeserving players (even those with promise, like Graham) to supposedly turn it around.
  14. So no DFA of Fien and Milone? Were they just put on waivers and if they get through, then will they be sent down? Doesn't make sense to DFA Graham and O'Rourke if they intend to get rid of Fien and Milone as well.
  15. Maybe you were among those who definitively knew that Fien and Milone wouldn't be assets this year, but I was not among them. It's always difficult for any organization to let go of players they've invested a lot of money in, especially when they have had a track record (if inconsistent) of success in the past. Good on the Twins for setting them free and eating the money. The apt metaphor is praising the parent for teaching the kid to call the tow-truck, even if it was the parent who lent the kid the keys. Although I wasn't sure Fien and Milone would fail, I also knew there was good chance they would, it's easy to say they should have been replaced with known-quantities at similar costs, but we enter the realm of speculation and hindsight.
  16. This is the right move, and be glad the Twins were willing to eat the money -- whining about the sunk-cost or the arbitration rationale doesn't take away from this being the right move. (Heck they could pass through waivers and still chose to be part of the organization; it's not impossible that either of the two might contribute later in the season.)

  18. You fought the good fight, my friend.
  19. If the shares can't be sold in a secondary market, it's pretty worthless -- the whole thing is a cynical investment, which makes betting on such players, well, prohibitive.
  20. Ryan made the move to send Meyer down; I'm betting he also made the call to start Meyer today. There might be more tension between the front office and the manager than anyone is letting on, and a lot of the early season happenings would make more sense if that's the case. The sequence of events -- from Meyer's call up to his start and eventual return to AAA -- is nonsensical, unless Molitor is being defiant.
  21. I wonder what responses "what is the most messed-up thing in the Bible" would elicit. These verses are supposed to be "funny."
  22. It's really going to happen. Donald Trump, your Republican Nominee for President of the United States.
  23. I guess what isn't clear is what you make of that determination - that the Twins are deprioritizing putting Meyer in the best position. (I don't necessarily agree with that determination, as I think it's more complex, even though I do agree it's less than ideal). The implication/inference of that determination would seem to be that the Twins are making a mistake. And for some posters, maybe not you, this mistake is illustrative of a general incompetence by the FO in regard to the development of prospects, and hence the piling on (before Meyer even makes his first ML start, no less).
  24. I'm not sure what you're alleging then. There's awful lot of implication and inference, combined with the disclaimer "well that's not what I'm saying". (For my part, it's pretty clear what's being alleged even if put in negative terms and not overtly suggested). The complexity of the situation, as I think I've indicated, would seem to cut-against making much of the Twins' disparate choices over the span of two years (or two weeks) with regards to Meyer. (Things have probably changed since last season, such as Meyer's actual AAA success as a starter.)
  25. Although Meyer and Kepler lingering on the bench isn't ideal, the harm of a loss of two week's worth of at bats or starts isn't so great, and the benefit of limited MLB exposure (even bearing witness on the bench) may chill the initial anxieties that plague prospects in the early going. My point is that the Twins aren't doing the least they could in regard to development for Meyer. There's a human complexity to actual success at the highest levels that goes beyond the number of at bats and innings pitched -- I think that's something pretty easy to discount when we talk about what's best for a given player. Although, sitting on the bench for two weeks may not have been ideal for Meyer, it may have done him some good in managing his inevitable debut as starter. At the very least, the premise shouldn't be discounted out of hand. The Twins' plans may not have been ideal, but nor have their plans been enacted with total disregard to what best for the player's development either; it's complex, and a balance between what's best for the team and what's best for the player, without disregarding either.
