  1. I really love the Expanse. But its not for everyone. It's pacing can be somewhat slow and even confusing (there are several plot lines that take some time coalesce), but it is very much space opera in the vein of Battlestar (good writing, good acting, ambitious plot, excellent production). So far, I've actually like the second season more than the first (the plot is moving forward at a much better pace); but I still find myself having to rewind because I missed some essential piece of dialogue.
  2. Amen.
  3. Excellent take on the enemies of the people from the Dallas Morning News.
  4. The teachers were basically asking Devos to impose her beliefs upon them....
  5. As I said, there's a difference between the impositions we accept by social contract and the impositions desired by the religious right. I think it's a matter of type, but you think it's merely a matter of degree--fine, the degree to which they wish to impose their beliefs on others shouldn't be tolerated.
  6. Take Donald's survey on the media.
  7. I know a lot of people don't like Richard Dawkins, but his book the Selfish Gene explores the issue of social contract and game theory by way of analyzing altruism as it occurs in nature. This book first exposed me to the Prisoner's Dilemma, Tragedy of the Commons and concept of Hawks and Doves; it also coined the word 'meme' I believe.
  8. Look, the impositions proffered by social contract are very different from those proffered by religion, although the latter will use the former as a vessel for their favored impositions. Let's not pretend that the source of right-wing religious morality has sound footing--it is neither founded in fact nor, in my opinion, the teachings of Jesus. I think it's fair game to debate the actual values of their policy stances--whether there's actually any there-there to their supposed 'morality'.
  9. Your insistence on equating each is, well, equally problematic.
  10. Yes, facts and alternative facts.
  11. Ugh. There's a difference between democracy and religion. One functions within rule of the majority, the other functions in spite of it. Also, I can vote against a party, and still choose to govern with the other side in mind and respect those same people (that doesn't mean let them impose their beliefs).
  12. If your morality (or religion) empowers you to disregard other people or impose your beliefs on other people, the government (i.e. everyone else) has legitimate justification to undercut their capacity do so. Too long we've shied from shaming Christian Americans in how self-serving their belief-system is. (I could go on and on and on.)
  13. To add more insult to injury: top Carson aid fired from HUD for writing critical article of Trump during primaries. They are going to do a McCarthy like witch hunt of the agencies.
  14. Link
  15. Cheers, Brock. At first, I was bit jaded by the demise of BYTO, but I'm thankful for the move to Twins Daily. This community has provides some of those most thoughtful discourse on the interwebs, at least in the Sports Bar. I count many of the posters, mods, and owners of this site as friends, and appreciate everyone's ongoing contribution, thoughtfulness, and respect.
  16. Random thought: one reason liberals lose is we can't all agree to tell the same lies.
  17. For as much as conservatives decry identity politics and political correctness; they sure are little bitches when they feel singled out.
  18. Rand Paul: "I just don't think it's useful to be doing investigation after investigation, particularly of your own party. We'll never even get started with doing the things we need to do, like repealing Obamacare, if we're spending our whole time having Republicans investigate Republicans. I think it makes no sense." Sigh.
  19. Flynn resigns. One wonders if journalists (and others) should have slow played their hand as to further implicate Trump. Nonetheless, a blow to Trump, and victory for anyone with ****s still to give.
  20. The ‘March for Science’ is gaining mainstream momentum
  21. Words do matter. Tactics do matter. But I still don't know what you would have 'us' do? I can only tell-off my righteous vegan aunt that she isn't helping so many times. Like wise, I can only recommend that you take a less haughty tone so many freaking times. Trump is the greatest gift to those seeking to build a coalition--unfortunately, coalition is probably better effectuated through opposition than bound by common-belief. I think the Republicans have demonstrated such in spades...
  22. Jesus, using comments on twitter to characterize a political movement or party is lame. Forget the tea party, let's use comments on stormfront.com to characterize the right. The false equivalency being made in this argument is really really astounding and tone-deaf. Liberals do have problem in that they become uber-motivated by their own pet cause at the exclusion of other causes to which they also believe. But I think that's very different problem then the snobby/elitist caricature. For my part, I hope the liberals own their education, their critical thinking credentials, as well as their working class roots. They need to push back forcefully on being defined by their opponents, and have failed to do this for decades, choosing to duck and dodge labels (of liberalism, of elitism etc.) by scurrying to the center. Righteousness exists on both sides (and even in the middle); if you want to fight elitism and pretentiousness, perhaps each of us should pull-back on how 'certain' we are of our positions.
  23. Right. Trump could have--perhaps--tailored a EO that would have fallen on party lines, but he sure mucked it up by being so hasty.
  24. Surprisingly, the 9th upheld the injunction on the travel ban on a 3 to 0 vote (the conservative justice (nominated by George W., I believe) voting with the two Dem-nominated justices).
  25. Cash me outside.
