Verlander just gave up 6 runs and 10 hits to a bad hitting Twins team. It happens. Hendriks was mostly in control of his pitches. Sometimes they hit his mistakes. Sometimes good hitters hit good pitches. If there was ever a year to test Hendriks, this is the year.

The Twins started the season with 4 major league hitters. Mauer, Morneau, Willingham and Doumit. If the Twins trade any of them before September, without getting a good prospect, they will prove that they are throwing in the towel and are more interested in a bad finish and a good prospect, than an improved season. Keeping them all means that the Twins want to play with integrity and win as many games as possible. Showing their prospects that they won't "quit" is the most valuable lesson the organizational players can learn.

Do you realize how much research it would take to confirm or refute these arguments ? My gut tells me that Terry Ryan is an excellent GM. Your gut tells you the opposite. Can it be proved by statistics ? Could you even agree on what makes a good GM ? So we argue endlessly and when one poster uses an example of success or failure, the other side dismisses it due to the small sample size. Here is one area where Sabermetrics could provide insight to the fans.

For all you stats guys out there... Where are the stats to analyze the number of bonehead plays that a team makes ? Should the manager of a team that makes more mental errors be considered a bad manager ? I watch most Twins games on TV and the smell test/eyeball test is that most teams make more gaffs than the Twins. Yes, I remember the Twins gaffs. Nishioka haunts my nightmares. Plouffe, Delmon, Willingham, Doumit do too. But even Delmon usually hit the cutoff man and threw to the right base. They may not be good fielders but they make the "smart" play more often than not. It is human nature to dwell on others faults. Use stats to say whether the Twins are deficient in "smarts". Then blame Gardy if we are.

Using stats to discover prospects or minor league gems is one thing. Using stats and fangraph-like information to help a player improve, is something entirely different. I'd like to know how Bruno and Andy use stats.

Here are 2 facts: 1) Buxton's running game is advanced. Buxton had 32 SB with 11 CS in CR. He has 20 SB with 6 CS in FtM. 2) Hick's is not. Hicks had 9 SB and 3 CS in 281 AB. In 2012 Hicks had 32 SB with 11 CS. With Hick's natural speed, should he be doing better than that?
