It's not the way the game used to be played, nor was it accepted to play it that way, regardless of the norm now. Jeffers' mission was accomplished. The play is still live. There are only 2 outs. Things can happen if you force the other team to make a play. Not likely, but sometimes it is successful if a player makes the action happen. This is no different than a runner not running the ground ball out, or watching a fly ball from the plate that you think is a homer and only getting to first instead of a double because it bounced off the wall.
