  1. 1. Buehrle's agent did a fine job of getting his client a fourth year. No other reported offers were for more than three. 2. Evidence. If you don't have to have a single shred of evidence to back what you say and chastise me for calling you on it then I can take the reports of what Buehrle was offered and say what it means. 13 million per year offer was a better offer than anybody not named CJ Wilson got. You can look that up. Miami was so damn proud of that contract that they gave him away. A reasonable contract you should get a prospect to three back. 3. But the team does hand out large contracts. Mauer's contract to keep him from free agency was a discount. So wasn't Morneau"s. Pavano given his age got a huge one. He was a free agent at the time and ranked by many sites as the second best pitcher available that year. And 3/39 for Buerhle last year, though outspent, was a huge offer for last year's market.
  2. Why shouldn't the Twins be taking risks? The Twins are owned by people who made over a billion dollars on taking risks. Very calculated ones
  3. Being done with scholarships meant they would send down well paid players.
  4. A 3/39 as a starting point in last years values for contracts was not off based for Buehrle. Believe what you want, keep repeating it enough ....
  5. You could have asked him when has Seth ever complained as long as you were pointing out problems with the post. I don't recall Seth ever stating anything but opinions on players values and skills. Seth might be closer to what you criticize people as being relatives to the Pohlads. Has anyone seen Seth and Jim Pohlad together? Lol.
  6. Last year they tried to get Buehrle, this year they were linked to Dempster. It is not as simple as you make it out to be.
  7. Oops, din't look close enough. The original poster is not the first to twist what someone has said. On 1500espn Mackey wrote this " But when the possibility arose that both could be dealt, manager Ron Gardenhire was adamant about one thing:If the centerfield job were to open up, Aaron Hicks deserves a legitimate shot to take it."
  8. Ask and you shall receive. Look and you can find Sports
  9. Given the market 3/30 is not unreasonable. Every once and a while you have to do what you don't want to do, in this case a 3 year contract. A 3 year contract may not be a good thing for the Twins, but it really isn't bad.
  10. I think the chief argument may be what is deemed a quality pitcher to add for the money. I don't disagree that the Twins needed to add quality pitchers. I don't think many would disagree that adding two pitchers who would be a capable #2 or 3 starters is a bad idea. Not a maybe on improving the middle infield. See, we can almost agree.
  11. I wish more people would follow this advice in terms of the healthy pitchers they wanted signed. They ignored the last couple years of service. In looking at what the pitcher potentially brings to the team you need to look pre injury to find the ceiling. What that person's new normal is you have to wait and find out. That is why Pelfrey got a one year deal. Look at Blackburn. He was never the same after the first time bone chips were removed.
  12. One day i looked back through different sites and found the Twins linked to about a dozen pitchers. There is no knowledge of actual offers made. counteroffers and ultimately being rejected. There is no knowledge of offers made and players said no thank you. There is no knowledge of agents telling the Twins don't even bother me, my client is not coming. There is a safe assumption that the Twins prefer a two year contract and players want longer. There is a claim by Doogie that the Twins made only a few offers. Do not even bother to ask who they made offers to.
  13. My God, Ryan didn't make an offer to any of the dozen middle infield free agents. He didn't pick one up in the rule 5 draft. You know Dan Uggla was a rule 5 pickup. Surely one of them is going to bean all star and the Twins are missing out. Why didn't they sign Andino was he wasn't tendered? That front office is just not doing their job.
  14. 761 million to Northwest Airlines to build maintenance facilities up north that they never did.
  15. The Pirates drafted Appel with the eight selection last year. Last year the Astros drafted Carlos Correa with the first selection. This year the Pirates draft 14. I doubt Appel would be there. If he was, then Pittsburg would have less money in their pool to offer him. Last year the slot money for #1 was 7.2 million, #8 2.9 million. #14 2.375 million. Had the Astros drafted him and he had not signed, Appel would have the right to request not to be drafted by the Astros again. He might make the request Pittsburg not draft him again however I am sure he is confident that will not be an issue.
  16. The point has always been that signing any of these less than average available pitchers on the free agent market will not make the Twins better. The other point has been no one has a clue what the contact with the upper echelon free agents has been. If they do not want to come here there is no point in negotiating. I won't stoop to the comment on wasting minds.
  17. There are many different reports from other writers besides Doogie in the airwaves. Heyman, Bollinger, LEN III all put out many little snippets. The Twins did have a bad rotation last year. The only name ever reported that would make a significant difference in the staff the Twins were interested in was Dempster. There was a note one time they talked to Sanchez. Saunders, Meyers, Lannan et al are not top of the rotation guys. Adding them would not have made a significant difference. So you are correct, they did not really go after decent pitching.
  18. Once again. If you were looking for a pretty darn good pitcher there really wasn't a whole lot out there. Using WAR on fan graphs, not the best but not the worst statistic, there were 11free agent pitchers above 2 for both of the last two years. If you look on their leader board 2.4 is the median WAR for all pitchers pitching a minimum of 120 innings. So if you were expecting the Twins to go after good pitching, it doesn't matter the number, it matters who they went after.
  19. Where is there a list published of players they talked to?
  20. Is the fascination with Lirano and Villaneuva the high K/9 totals? The last two years as a starter Villanueva had an ERA over 4.5. His xfip overall and his overall ERA were about equal. Other than strikeouts, what does he bring to the team?
  21. What is Willingham's career just lucky percentage number? As numbers go closer to the mean, willingham is more likely to go back to his average of just luck home runs rather than the league average. If Willingham has a average healthy year with 600 plate appearance he would hit 27 homers by career average HR/plate appearance
  22. Sources cited like Thyrloss has? People on the far periphery may not know the whole process of what goes on. In regards to starting pitching free agents. Haren, Jackson, Sanchez, Dempster, McCarthy, Marcum, Blanton and Guthrie are the pitchers available to the Twins who have decent sustained pitching. #3 Starter or better material Pretty darn good pitcher material. 2 or greater WAR. If Ryan contacted the players (agents) and a third said no way, that only leaves a few for you to recruit. Meyers vs Saunders vs Correia, they all fill a need, but they are not the difference maker. You only have to pick one or two to go after. There is no need to go after 10 of them. I did not include Grienke, Kuroda, or Lohshe as I don't think any of them would sign here to begin with for various reasons and give credit to the FO for knowing that also. Once they did not pick up Baker's option I would have predicted him to be gone.
  23. I have deductive reasoning on my side. There is a set of circumstances and observations that lead to my opinion. Correct on Marcum but there is that thing called Pohlad's money. Considering how Carl Pohlad made his money I do not see how Jim Pohlad would approve it.
  24. I am waiting for proof that any free agent wanted to listen to the Twins make them an offer.
